Ice Fishing Shelter Setup is very important if you are ice fishing from a shelter. Ice shelters keep you out of the weather and comfortable in the worst of conditions. Sometimes you just have to have one. On our guided ice fishing trips we always have an ice house set up to fish from or as a warming hut.
There are so many options out there so where do you start? Hub or flip over? That's a great question. If you're solo then I'd probably get a flipover. If you ice fish with groups of friends or family then I would get a large hub. Think of it this way... If you're a loner ice angler then a small flip-over is perfect. If you're a social ice angler then the hug is the best shot.
I like both Clam, Otter and Eskimo. Otter is probably the burliest of them all. Super heavy duty on almost everything.
On guided trips, we use shelters all the time. I run some big hubs and a 4 person flip over. Check out the footage of our guide setup. These units have stood the test of time and have taken some serious abuse. The Eskimo Outbreak 850 XD is a beast of a hub. 4 years of use and she's still going strong. I've had this hub out in the nastiest of conditions and no problems. The Clam Thermal X400 thermal flip over has been in rotation for 2 years now. It's a very solid shelter too and has stood the test of time.
The best place to start is to get the ice house you think is the best for you and use it for a few years. You'll figure out what you want differently if anything.
