Ice fishing Whitefish Lake Montana is super fun and a great way to get out on the water for a fun day of fishing. Whitefish Lake is a great lake to get out and ice fish on. It can be hard to predict when it'll freeze though. Some years it won't freeze completely or even be a safe option. We typically need about 10 days of below zero to get the lake to cap. Once it's capped then the ice will grow pretty quickly. I like to see 6-7'' of clear before I go out there. Being a big lake the thickness can be variable and dangerous.
We're typically targeting Lake Trout on Whitefish Lake. White jigs are the key and fishing them deep. Our lakers really seem to like white. Most of the bait fish they spit up are white or light gray. Fish white... I typically like 100' or more. Some years you'll find them in shallow but most of the time we're 100' plus.
