I was going to wait until next summer to enter the attic once more... but winter came, and the house was cold.
I chose to use rockwool insulation because it is a great insulator, how it doesn't degrade over time, it's water resistance, and it's fire resistance (pretty good to have in a wooden house with scary old electrics...)
Who first thought to melt a bunch of rocks and create a wool out of their molten strands? What else has been melted?
Understanding that I will most likely need to add more insulation eventually for a more permanent R40 style solution, this is a great start.
All of the rockwool was ordered on Amazon Japan. Probably the best $5 i ever spent for free delivery. I felt bad for the delivery person, but i made sure to help him with the unloading. 15 boxes and we got it done!
The murder hornet nest was found and bashed with a broom. Hopefully next summer they stay clear.

Purchased through the local Akiya (空き家) or Vacant house bank, we purchased our Kominka in Nagano prefecture located within mere minutes of an Olymic ski hill!
