The ice accident was funny. I never watched a full episode of Ice Road Truckers to know they couldn't stop on the ice. I knew they always talked about season time and thawing but that in game ice accident was instant. :)

I drive the ice roads here in NWT Canada. For me it’s really not that bad, you need to stay around 40-60km. Some sections are a lot slower, 10-15km. But it’s around 400km long. I’ve definitely seen some wild stuff in my short time of doing it.

I'm from Canada and in the winter they pay someone a huge amount to be the first one to plow the ice road on our lake. They also use pine trees as road markers. Looks weired seeing a row of pine trees on the side of a 'road' in the middle of the lake

So you need to put your radiator cover on to keep the truck warm. You can see the temperature warning light on your HUD and that's letting you know the truck is too cold. That's why it was running like crap in the beginning and might be why your windshield kept frosting. Also you didn't have your truck heat on, that's why you needed the jacket on inside lol. Good luck on the next trip.

Usually the ideal minimum thickness of ice we wait for is 10” for a normal sized vehicle. Small to mid sized. 14” for an ice fishing shack/truck is ideal. You’re pretty safe at that point to be driving on the lake. Still gotta watch where your driving of course

To answer your question about if you can be sure on where the ice is thick and not thick, when the ice path is created, they use a light scout vehicle that sends some sort of waves out to detect where the ice is the most durable.

Pump jacks are for oilfield. They pull the oil out of the ground after they drill and find a good spot to pump

You should watch the tv show Ice Road Truckers.

I think you're probably better off with good winter tyres and removing the chains while on the ice. The pressure of the chain links cracks the ice. And since the ice is plowed, you don't need the snowchains. Probably good to check that sign at the start of the lake, or even check that 'guide' 😊
