This middle aged guy right here has been trying to improve my skating, and this is exactly what I needed. I’ve been trying to work on skating backwards and my hockey stop as well.
If you are talking about yourself being the “middle aged guy”, you should have said “his skating”, not “my skating”. Otherwise, it seems like you are pointing out the coach being middle aged for no reason. Lol
All my uncles cousins and friends played hockey since they were Children and I've been a zamboni driver for 4 years now. I'm 26 and finally learning hockey. Thanks for the video.
I’m a new hockey player and it is my first year. My skating skills are decent but these drills helped me a lot. Thank you for teaching me. I’m going to be a better player.
Phil P Thanks! Check out this one for the one-legged C-Cuts. It’s in German but I write subtitles in English for my German vids! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qsqCX-6lEuE.html
I’m switching from figure skating to hockey (don’t love figure skating anymore but I’ve missed the ice, and I love contact and team sports) and I need this haha. It's so different. I tried to stop on hockey skates and nearly died lol.
I’m trying to learn and literally the first step I can notice the distance you are a life saver thank you so much for this I’m watching this and trying these on the rink at the same time
Thanks my son has been taking lessons for a few years and today i decided to step on the ice with him. I only managed to fall 3 but now looking for vids to help me improve!
Thank u!! I've been looking for some beginner drills. Unfortunately no one in my family knows how to skate properly and I'm too old to take lessons so I'm a self-taught skater for now. I started last year which got interrupted due to covid so I managed to only learn slow backwards skating and forward crossovers. My balance is decent as an ex-dancer so I can't wait to try these!!
Thank you for the video Marcel. I've been volunteering helping beginners. I will admit that some of these are still a little advanced for some of these kids but I will certainly use some of what you have demonstrated. Thanks!!
Glad I could help Stephen! Yes, maybe one or two drills are too hard for pure beginners. Here’s the link to my pure learn to skate video- hope than can help you too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FhnZLEOisek.html
I've been skating on and off for years, played a little rec hockey but never enough to be any good at it (it's not big in the UK and there's not many rinks). I turned 40 this week and treated myself to some new skates and went to the rink for the first time in a decade. Public skate sessions are always counter clockwise so all my drills are way better in one direction than the other which is really annoying and I was stuck at the same level, never really improving. I am very quick over the ice when moving counter-clockwise, but clockwise I don't seem to have confidence in my edges and I quickly start wobbling or the skate starts skidding and bouncing. I took a lot away from this vid and I can't wait to get back to the rink and start trying them out and improving.
Glad I could help out! Yeah I know how it is with just one direction at public skating. I try to find a corner or got right to the middle circle with some people who I coach, so we stay out of the way but still can work the other direction.
When executing the various "cuts" (like for the eggs or slalom), are you lifting the front of the skate slightly? Hard to imagine making any kind of turns with blades flat on the ice.
Thanks! You're right, I did explain 1,2 and 6 but not the other drills. 1. Get the feel of the edges 2. Getting low is a must for being able to skate more powerfully 3. Learning The "Egg"-style c-Cuts will help later with turning. 4. A"Pre-" drill for turning. This is how we start to learn a tight turn. 5. For Balance 6. To help not getting injured when falling down, and it's fun!
Can you recommend protection gear for beginner skaters that aren’t intending to play hockey? Seems silly to be all suited in full hockey equipment to go to my public skating session. I really appreciated you including falling in your video!
All of the techniques and moves are explained and demonstrated. What more of an explanation would you like? Unfortunately since I do not have a cameraman I have to place the camera at a certain spot and film from there.
Im so glad you mentioned the superman glide. im coming back to the basics bc i havent skated in like a decade, and i felt way less comfortable with the concept of falling than i should be & it kept me from committing to certain drills that feel a little harder. i kept thinking “oh i hope i fall today so i can be reminded that falling isnt such a big deal” so hearing that this is something that happens & that just throwing yourself on the ice can fix it is great
I'm just learning how to skateboard (35yo) and I have the same idea :D I'd prefer to finally let myself fall so I know it's not a big deal but the survival instinct keeps me stuck on the board no matter what, like I'd do the weirdest balance poses to avoid falling :D
Beginner skater at 28. Played hockey for like three years now but always at beginner level and never well. I can’t wait to try these drills. Can you comment on how your mobility is or is not restricted once you’re in pads? I can’t tell if my gear just isn’t fitted right or if I am just a bad/stiff skater
I play for a team named Queen city Royals and I used to play for A team named triad storm and they were doing it wrong now that I see and I’m just really mad about that
I first watched this video when I was getting back into skating a month back, I'm very much beginner level. It didn't really make sense to me and seemed a bit pointless compared to other more aggressive drill videos...I tried to egg and couldn't, so gave up. Then this weekend, I was trying to learn to undercut and crossover and realised the c cut with undercut portion of this video, so I tried to egg and could and suddenly I realised how good this video is at getting you used to doing things that you'll use in more advanced moves. Now it's part of my routine every time I go (apart from the superman 😂)
@@MarcelsHockeySchool have you done more drills like these focused on the skating aspect? For crossovers and skating backwards for example. Of all the videos I've been watching, yours and Coach Jeremy's seem to get through to me most 😂
Jaymi Australia life here’s a pure learn to skate video I shot, which might be more helpful to you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FhnZLEOisek.html
Richard Leonard This is my basic „Learn to Skate“ Video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FhnZLEOisek.html These drills I posted are a progression of that video
im 24 and i started skating in Jan i want to be able to play hockey because i have a lotta friends who love it and i wanna give it shot and my dad played hockey growing up so thanks for the help
As I explained in the video, the one-legged glide on the edges was only shown as a progression which you can start trying after you can glide straight on one leg (which is a drill for beginners and the main drill in that part of the video)
I just get thrown off by the tiny blade that you’re balancing on when skating. By just putting ice skates on and even walking is basically asking for a broken ankle. I don’t get how it’s safe, how is one supposed to balance their whole body with just something as slim as a pencil holding you up, you have no base? I’m just jaded and scared to try new things but it just doesn’t look safe and I’m scared to turn an ankle
Just started skating and hockey and let me tell ya these videos have been a HUGE help. It’s hard to pick up hockey as an adult and almost 0 beginners classes for adults here in the Dakotas
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Will I fall backward if I shift the weight to the heels? You mean, for both forward and backward eggs? If it is not from your instructions, I may have thought that you want to shift the weights to the toes, the front part of the blades? I have hardly finished one complete cycle of the egg without stopping. Is this easy and can be learnt in a day?😑 And do the toe pick, front, middle and end of the blades play important roles and needed to be switch to in different drills?
Szia! Először azt hittem, hogy olasz zászló van a "logo"-dban, aztán láttam, hogy a családneved Juhász, azaz egy magyar név. :))) Üdv Magyarországról, köszi a videókat, nagyon jók!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Your videos are fun and attractive. Beginners always fall and this can hurt the hands badly if they stop the fall by hands. What you would recommend if they fall.
@@Leon-tm7wo wear a pair of gloves. You will not hurt your hands on the ice by falling. This is more of a problem on inline skates where the hands don’t slide on the pavement.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Maybe I have not described it correctly. If the beginner lost the balance and were to break the fall by hand, for example stopping a fall that may hit the head, the wrist and elbow may be hurt and feel painful for some weeks. The impact force of the hand hitting the ice may be more than half of the body weight. So would there be a better practice when the beginner lost the balance? And if pain ointment or pain pill necessary in speeding up the recovery? Looking forward more of your videos.😊
@@Leon-tm7wo I understood what you meant, and again, it is still better to fall onto your hands than for example onto your hip. Wear gloves and elbow pads if you prefer to lessen the impact.
In Landsberg am Lech. Yes I agree with the table of contents- I believe that YT is supposed to do that automatically with the newer videos. The fact is, I subtitle all my vids (the German ones with English and vice versa), which is a ton of work already, so I dont really have time to put even more work into the after video stuff.
Schöne Videos 👍🏿. Ist eventuell ein Video geplant, dass die Laufwege der Flügelstürmer im Spielaufbau aus dem eigenen Drittel heraus beschreibt? Vielen Dank 😊
occiput12 Danke erstmals 🙏 so ne Aufbau Thema ist extrem spezifisch- davor müsste ich eigentlich 2gg1, gesamt Aufbau, Forecheck, D-Zone, und vieles anderes machen, also sehr schwierig....
