My coach had me get a very thin insert to go under my foot, and put a thick memory foam insert on top of my foot, this prevents lace bite, toe lift, and has basically forced me to balance in the correct position. I have also been doing some exercises to correct pronation but the extra padding has helped a lot. It is quite squishy on top so I still pronate if I get lazy but it's there to remind me not to do it. And the effects against lace bite alone are definitely worth it. I am also doing off-ice exercises to correct pronation and strengthen my ankles in the right direction. You can have strong ankles but if the strength is lopsided you may still pronate. After I build some good habits I will let the inserts go but it is helping a lot for the time being.

As an older adult the tops of my legs rotated inwards. It wasn't possible to just change the angle of my feet just by turning them.The muscles were strongly fixed by then at the hips, sides of knees and ankles.. Four years later with lots of skating and my legs are more than 3/4 of the way towards not being turned inwards in at the ankles. The difference to my skating as a result is amazing.

This explains SO MUCH! I've been taking classes and couldn't get to grips with one leg balancing at all. I saw pics a friend took and I definitely to this! And my new skates aren't tied tight enough I don't think... I'll try this and see if it helps!

If you are new to figure skating, then this is a normal thing to struggle with. I saw you leave a comment on another video too. It takes time to master getting your ankle upright, which is probably what is making you struggle with the one foot glide. Make sure your equipment is correctly laced up and practice the two foot glide getting your ankles upright before trying to pick your foot up into the one foot glide

Thank you for this great video! I've been doing recreational skating for a couple of years now, and wanted to start learning some new things, but it was impossible for me to balance one foot. I knew I'm doing something wrong, so I scoured the internet for tips, until I finally came across this, and bingo! This is exactly what I've been doing all this time! Now that I know the problem, I'm trying to correct it, but I'm finding it very hard especially cuz being on the inside blade feels much more secure. Can you offer any tips or exercises to break this habit?

I encourage my grandson to try skating on one foot to make him aware of the pronation. So much of skating is weight entirely on one foot so that is an essential ability, don't you think?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
Correcting the pronation on the ice is very important. It's incredibly difficult to balance on one leg if your ankle is rocked in. As you point out, a lot of moves on the ice requires the balance to be over one foot. Correcting this problem is essential for beginner skaters as it limits their ability to improve.

Amusingly enough, I'm only rocking in on one foot when skating. It helped that I was finally taught how to properly tie my skates (as in... tightening in the right spots). Now I will try to make a conscious effort to correct my stance every time I notice my ankle rocking in. Hopefully it will help with the cramping in the foot :'D

@keatondauffing1166

My friend does the opposite… she lets her skate blade fall in and her ankle fall out. I’m trying to get her to be more aware of it, but I also think she’s trying to avoid pressure on the inside of her ankle, which is why she’s turning it the other way. Also I noticed when that foot was closer to the wall, she would turn it in more. Teaching her the concept of pushing with her skates and gliding is hard too. She’s more walking on the ice right now. It took two hours to get her gliding marginally better. Any tips? (And yes we already tried marching, scooter pushes, doing little turns with each skate to move forward, and a sort of penguin waddle. The penguin waddle seemed to work best, but she still doesn’t quite get the concept of pushing and gliding.)

It's important if you are going to continue to skate to ask a coach at the local rink to recommend a skate shop that can fit you properly in a pair of ice skates and blades for your level and type of skating. If you only go occasionally then do a little reading online to understand how ice skates should fit. This inward ankle issue is most commonly caused from skates being to big and/or the ankle support being broken down. It's painful after awhile and no fun to skate like this.

How do i find the balance between good support and too tight when lacing the skates? My skates are probably always too tight because my feet get either numb or hurt badly. But if i loosen it even just a little bit it doesn't feel like there is enough support and i can kinda bend to the sides at the ankle which i think I'm not supposed to be able to do?

I noticed that figure skating is extremely competitive, some egotistical instructors act like everyone wants to be pro. Some people just want to be decent enough to enjoy skating. What he told you was pointless and useless, you're ankles are NOT too weak for regular, fun, good skating. Maybe he meant you're ankles were too week for triple axel jumps that land with 5x the body weight in pressure. Still, pointless to tell a beginner.

This could be a number of different issues. You could have skates that are not very strong and so make it difficult to hold you ankle upright. Your ankles could be a little weak and need strengthening to help improve this. You could be flat footed, and require an insole to support the fallen arch in your foot. You could also have your blade on slightly wrong, which makes it fall to the inside edge easily (this is the least likely reason) Hope this helps 👍

But for doing a swizzle it is ok?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 6 лет назад
Yes it is okay when your feet are out on the swizzle but as you bring your feet back together you should pull the blade upright so that the feet touch at the end of the swizzle. If you do the whole swizzle with the ankles rocked in you will struggle to build up speed on your swizzle and may even struggle to do one complete swizzle.

Did you do hockey?
@WritingFighter
@WritingFighter 3 года назад
Ok. So that's probably one of my main problems. How do you skate on an edge, then? I'm trying to learn to skate to play hockey and there's a hundred and one beginner videos and coaches that talk about how knee bend is hugely important for vasic balance and everything you do, the same with "wide" stance and feet together and legs straight is inherently bad. So we're gravitating towards ankle rolling and knocked knees as that's the center of attention.
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown Год назад
Yeah, I am puzzled about that as well. Those hockey coaches are always harping about feet apart, knees bent, giving an inside blade stance exactly like what this guy says not to do. Part of that is because the goals of hockey skating are different than those of figure skating. Another part of it is that once you're a good skater, like those hockey coaches are, you can break guidelines. In my own pursuit of recreational public skating, I have found that skating on a flat blade and avoiding skating on the inside edge, as taught here, has been key to my improvement.
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown Год назад
As for "how do you skate on an edge," you only do it when it's appropriate. In the words of this coach: Be aware of your ankle, if it's straight or rocked in. You need to learn to use the flat blade as well as the inside and outside edges and use you ankles to vary the blade's contact of the ice as appropriate for what you are doing. Hard left turn, you'll use your ankles to skate on the outside edge of the left skate and the inside edge of the right skate. Straight ahead, you put equal weight on the inside and outside edges so that you skate on a flat blade. One foot glide, you need to be dead flat on the blade, with equal weight on the two edges.
