Hi everyone. I follow you religiously. I have learned a lot from all of your videos; from canning, solar, appliances, chickens, construction, all have been informative. I plan on building my own house and follow in your prepper footsteps, but something I see that is a concern is no insulation under the slab. I know you are planning on doing a food storage area here besides the small pantry upstairs. Is this why you went with this option? For a colder basement temperature for food preservation or a root cellar? Again love your channel and keep sharing. A friend from way down south in the heart of Dixie!

Not taping the seams almost defeats the purpose of the plastic, clean rock that drains easier would be a better choice for under the slab. Also if you had a thermal break under your walkout door it would keep the basement slab warmer. But you did it the way slabs have been done for years so I can't blame you.

Hiddenite is world famous for Emeralds. Any luck on your property? My friend, back in the 1970's, went down there and came back with a 125 pound Smokey Quartz Crystal. He overstayed his vacation, the land owner dug a foot more down in the trench and hit a HUGE Emerald strike. You guys are great! Thank You

every area has it's own unique way of doing things. Where we live, sand has to be trucked quite a distance so it's expensive. Crushed rock is abundant and that's what typically is used under slabs here. I put 2" of foam under my basement slab and installed radiant tubing. It's incredibly comfortable paired with the ICF foundation.
@neckofthewoods24
@neckofthewoods24 4 года назад
What type of crushed rock? I’m worried 57 lime stone will poke through the vapor barrier. I’m thinking 57 round river rock but that won’t pack well. I’ve seen other use 57 limestone, then sand, then vapor, then foam.
@adubbelde1
@adubbelde1 4 года назад
@@neckofthewoods24 It's 3/4 minus crushed limestone. Where we live, I've not seen anyone use a vapor barrier under their slab. the soil here is well drained. Basically I'm sitting on solid rock.
@teekay1785
@teekay1785 4 года назад
@@neckofthewoods24 If you use foam you put it on top of the foam otherwise think you would need to put some sand on top of the gravel to keep from tearing the plastic and I would have used at least 10 mil plastic no matter what code is.
@neckofthewoods24
@neckofthewoods24 4 года назад
tee kay I’ve never see anyone put the plastic on top of the foam as foam can absorb moisture over time. Also I know they make thicker plastic but I’ve only ever seen people use 6mil. If 10mil isn’t crazy more I’m not opposed to it.

yep ... you got bugs in the sand ...worker bugs going at it hard ! Your idea of "extra cement " is great , I made the same spots but in a sidewalk run for each "extra" as a walk to the placement of the SHED, come time for it , some walk slabs are ready done. When you have to buy so much, it appears wasteful when others drop it in a heap of waste. Grand job on the floor, project coming along great !
@davidkilbourne2711

great job! Are you going to put water sealer on the floor! It will help to keep floor sealed. Thompson water sealer great and you can sweep the water after it rains. We used to do it when I was building houses and it works. It comes in a 5 gallon bucket, and it helps when it rains a lot. Keeps the wood from bucking. you've came a long way and it's looking great!

Nice job . I know that you're useing Advantech for the flooring and it's good for a year exposed to the elements but being who I am I would have covered it up . For a few extra bucks for some plastic tarps like why not . No water on the flooring , joists and support beam and no water on the slab . For the price of that plywood and bad weather coming for a few days . Yikes . Then again it's not my build .

_Question, why did you use sand? Why not Type II or what we call chat/ dolo, it's a fine crusher, that packs really tight. Vapor barrier, I would think it would defeat the purpose. Is it code there? I understand using sand for marble slab's or title, for the motions, and movement of the ground, and this why I would use sand. I've even used Type II, then asphalt over that, then pour concert over that. Love the work you're doing though, I just have a quizzitive mind is why I ask._

Was surprised to see some of the differences in how things are done. Since you packed the sand perhaps the slab won't be apt to crack and then shift up or down in the plane of the floor. This is my biggest issue with a couple basements I've had. I noticed no fiber in the video which would prohibit you from having that smooth as glass finish anyway. Do you know what PSF rating the pour was? Also, with that big door opening you'll always have room for doing things differently later if needed I suppose. Curious about the basement layout, just a wood shop or part of the house?

This is probably a dumb question but couldn’t the concrete have been poured before even the walls were up? I would have thought that would’ve been much easier. I’m sure there’s a reason it’s done this way I just don’t know what it is. I’ve watched homes be built in Florida and usually the slab is poured with the plumbing sticking out of it before the walls are added.
