ICF Mountain Homestead: Raising the Ridge Beam

Guildbrook Farm

The most dangerous part of the build so far is rigging, raising and setting the LVL ridge beam in place... without a crane. The crew built custom scaffolding to help get the 44' long beam in place while climbing around over four stories above the ground. And then the wind started blowing.

No criticism from me! They definitely know what they are doing and confident in their actions. It's my own fear of heights that made me nervous! I am half blind which affects my depth perception and eye hand coordination (think right handed, left eyesight).....I am in awe of what they can do so high up! Kudos to the crew!

The leading causes of private sector worker deaths in the construction industry are falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution. Any concern for the safety of this workers is legitimate. But if you are not concern for the safety of the workers, think about protecting your future. When there is an accident in a construction site not only it can destroy the life of the worker but also the future of the owner and the owner's family. I'm speaking from my own experience.
@shawncockrell6007

@@archliud all fine and dandy until you have to pay out of your pocket...if you want to use a crane and fall protection go ahead,....just don`t try and mandate we all do......or worse yet.....deem us unsafe because you choose to be overly safe. PS, ……..my buddie died wearing osha fall protection.

@@shawncockrell6007 Understood. But there is always a right time and a wrong time to do stuff. Tower climbers get killed still wearing their fall protection. But they also survive a lot of the times wearing it.

The ancestors of this crew must have worked on the Empire State Building (1931). They walk on narrow walls and lift heavy weights over their heads like they do it everyday. OSHA agents everywhere are thumbing through their rule book with one hand while stroking off with the other thinking about the ticket they are going to be able to write. At least they had scaffolding and what looked like a decent rope, I have seen similar work done off of extension ladders. Me I would have Nailed on some inclined braces and pulled it up that.

The only thing I didnt understand and it has nothing to do with safety is why they didnt first build the gable ends that the beam would sit on.

The gables are balloon framed and don’t really hold up the ridge at all. There are built up posts within the gables that hold up the beam.

I only saw one angle brace back into the interior wall, and it was only set after they had the first beam up. More power to these guys, but I think they needed better communication... really bad move to have lifted both ends at once before the one end was set and controlled at vertical in the pocket. The guy in the middle had no chance at straightening that floppy beam upright once it went out of vertical! Looked like they came close to losing any control of it.
