"War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse...There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent" - Hawkeye
@@cevapipapi6167 I'm going to guess that you've never experienced war, espcially any that you didn't use a Playstation controller to kill people? That's generally part of the problem today, even with those that have experienced war, but didn't experience it up close and personal. However, it's not deep from me, it's from a fucking TV series...one you're probably not old enough to remember. One that was written by people who DID experience war at its shittiest...something you're probably never do, or will be too candy assed to handle it. Trust me, if shit happens and you actually ever do end up on the shitty end of war, when you're sitting in the trenches, in the mud and the blood, not knowing if you're going to live for the next 24 hours...you'll get really fucking deep. We do that when we know it's about time we're going tits up. My time is close enough that I wonder if I'll wake up the next morning, when I go to sleep at night. I get deep, but that wasn't it.
@@Chainsnotforreal War is always sad. The inhumanity of people against their own, all at the direction of people that wouldn't ever dream of fighting the conflict that they have caused. People killing for reasons that they don't know why, or understand, and wouldn't want to with it being that they are dying in vain for someone else's ideas and fuckery...and that is for those fighting against each other on all sides. NO ONE wins in a war - PERIOD. It's easy to claim victory when your ass just sat in an office in Congress, or the Pentagon but, the damage that it does to soldiers and civilians in horrific. How can you go back to a normal life after having killed countless other humans for no purpose that you're really aware of. The memories of fallen comrades, and the innocent people that were killed. Only a psychopath comes out of a war unscathed. Only a psychopath actually ever wanted to be involved in the war to begin with. Now we've made that killing easy and sterile, with weapons that kill using a Playstation controller. It's not the same as when we had to bayonet someone up close and personally...see their humanity and the same fear in their eyes that you had in yours. To see their humanity and to extinguish it ONLY because they were falling some cunt's orders, just like you are. And then one day, the end comes. 5 minutes ago you were fighting, and then the cease fire comes and it's over...for everyone but those who fought in combat, which they'll carry with them all the remaining days of their lives, eating away inside them like a cancer. It's also different now because there's no draft, like there was when I was a teen and the Vietnam War was still going on. No, now it's people with no hope in life, who volunteer for the military with the idea that they'll get a free education, maybe a 20 yr career if they play their cards right, maybe stationed on some nice base in a great climate...and then 6 months after they sign up, they're heading off to a war somewhere, hoping that they don't get killed before they get those benefits that they were promised. I used to be a gung ho mothefucker that loved a good conflict...the "bomb them to the stone age" type but, a LOT has changed over the decades. I'm not so prone to want a war with anyone any more, and know the costs of such wars. Whether the one dipshit who commented about people posting that quote and thinking their deep, understands shit in life, which I doubt, it was deep to the person who wrote it because, he'd experienced it in Korea, like my father did. That was the war of his youth, Vietnam was the war of my youth. MILLIONS of gallons of blood (ours, theirs, kids, women, innocent civilians) spilled on Vietnamese soil, and now it's just a quickly fading memory. Vietnam is an inexpensive tourist stop, when you can go see the wreckage and graves of war for an incredible low price. Because all of us old farts are dying off, and the memory of the horrors of that war are dying with us. That's why history just keeps fucking repeating itself...there are no people left around to remember the atrocities, the horror of war, so we're always ready and willing to kick a new one into gear.
Dutch is my native language i never had a single lesson of German and i understand more then half of what he is saying love how similar our language is
Yeah I'm German and I'm pretty sure we both could talk to each other and understand each other without learning the languages. Really fascinating how similar the languages are

I got two unskippable ads for two war games (all with German stuff such as fighter planes and tiger tanks) while trying to listen to a song against war.
Im German and so I understand this song very well and I can just tell it's a beautiful and very true song against war. I did not know it before and Im kinda shocked because its very well written I think and just a perfect example for German poetry. I've researched a bit and found out that this song is more or less from the year 1870 while the German-French war. It's a Folk-, Soldier- and Workers song, but by an unknown artist. This also shows me that this German-French hereditary enmity, even back than was just an artificial construct of those who used this to legitimate their actions. Im glad that we by now were able to give hands and stay as good neighbors and just friends.

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars And a person of which nation sang this song? Exactly ... I know that many poles are still full of hate and righteousness ... but the path between righteousness and self-righteousness is extremely thin ... most fall into self-righteousness, pushed by their bitterness and storming emotions.
No matter how old this song is, it can still be used, that's what's beautiful about the song, any soldier can sing it, of course with lyric change to language spoken in, but message still the same,
This song is the saddest song ever written, you can hear the pain and solemness in the singers voice. All to often the Germans depicted in WWI and WWII are depicted as heartless killers but in the end they are are suffering aswell. I learned that some of my german ancestors served in the first world war and when i hear this song I remember and mourn the loss of them.
When discussions of history come up in Serbia, there is a good chance someone always says "x war was a brother-killing war", once our teacher said that to us, then imediatly added "yet again, brother killing war is every war"
Der Soldat ist der letzte der sich einen Krieg wünscht / The soldier is the last person who wants a war Zum Gruß, reiche in freundschaft ich die Hand / I'm extending my hand in friendship to you
@@GreatPolishWingedHussars yeah and you know why? Because of the heavily propaganda. Many people wanted to go to war, but they didnt know how fcked up it really was. thats why they wanted to go to war.
Thank you for the praise! But you don't understand that RU-vid is a gigantic propaganda machine. Such videos are propaganda! It's about the impression the song creates. This is whitewashingpropaganda. Because this nation certainly didn't consist of prisoners who wrote peace songs! The opposite is true! By the way, such comparisons with other nations as you do. Are also used for whitewashing. According to the motto! Oh, others were-XXX-also cruel and committed-XXX-crimes. So what this nation did-XXX-isn't so bad.
I love how the meaning of the song is cleear in the title its not "Ich bin Ein Soldat"(I'm A Soldier) its "Ich bin Soldat" (I'm Soldier) because as soon as you become a soldier you become a tool, a number, a statistic, one of many, for all they're concerned you might as well be the soldier, not even giving you the distinction of being one.
The sad truth that people after any war forget and wrote such songs is that there will always be people somewhere who will give a damn about the suffering war always is and attack their neighbours. Look at russia right now. I‘d love a world in which soldiers aren‘t needed. Where these brave people don‘t have to sacrifice their happiness for the good of the people they protect behind them, but I fear humanity will never be able to move past war. And so anyone who does and doesn‘t stay prepared is only making himself the easy target for a tyrant. I am german and I fear that we have grown too acustomed to being at peace and not needing a military anymore, it‘s a quiet and calm but dangerous road not to be readying your defense in times of peace. But I so wish it were not that way and humanity could see that we can all work together and achieve more as a whole than any drawn up nations on their own
we are human too. and war ist just a piece of shit and the goverment that wants war can fight themselves. Idc i wont go to war im not taking part of this brain dead fairyland of satan.
Earth deserves peace, our earth has witnessed the worst of humanity, its honestly unimaginable what limits will humans reach to gain victory over peaceful and harmless people. God bless all the dead soldiers of these conflicts, no matter there nationality, race or sex, also the song is the best german song I ever heard

I'm an American, New Jersey I do not know a single word of German. Only word I know is ''Krieg'' but if a anti-war song can be sung In a language I don't know but I still feel the message, then it's beautiful
For those who need to know: this is a recording of the band "Zupfgeigenhandel" which was very popular among the leftist anti-war movements of the 70ies and 80ies. They found and covered lots of songs from the 1848 era.
@@Microbe1972 You just want to whitewash the Germans in a pathetic way. But not everyone but most were involved in crimes where they not only murdered but also robbed and committed other crimes. It is a historical fact that the overwhelming majority of Germans since 1935 at the latest were follower and supporters of the German Nazi government, thus they were Nazis. This was a completely megalomaniac, mad, criminal, amoral and degenerated Nazi nation with the pure, insane and utterly barbarism! This Nazi nation was not only responsible for the deaths of 70 million but also for the destruction of many European cities and the economic ruin of many nations. A smaller percentage died as a result of the wars this nation is responsible for, but most were murdered in various genocides. Millions of them murdered millions. Virtually the entire nation was involved in the felonies because there were various possibilities to engage in felonies. Not only the SS and the soldiers murdered but also ordinary civilians. Virtually the entire Nazi nation was involved in the various genocides. Because people were also murdered through hard work and starvation in the factories. Killing through hard work with too little food was part of the genocides. The watchdogs of the captives forced to work in the factories were ordinary civilians. They were the watchdogs for the "ordinary" slave laborers and of the laborers to be murdered by labor. Millions were murdered by labor and a total of 20 million were slave laborers so there were millions of civilians who were watchdogs watching the laborers die. They also murdered and tortured the workers themselves. And that was just one way by civilians participated in crimes. For the vast majority of Germans were followers and supporters of the German Nazi government. They were willing tools of the German Nazi government. One of this slave laborers was my grandfather who, like millions of others, was forced into slave labor. My other grandpa was hit by a German civilian to death. This German civilian was the watchdog for the Polish workers in a factory seized by the Germans in Poland. My grandpa worked there. By the way, it was impossible to quit the job. The Germans had the list of employees. And besides, my grandfather had to work to feed the family. The German watchdog got angry with my grandpa! He hit him in his anger until he died. My grandpa wasn't allowed to defend himself. Because if a Pole only raised his hand against a German, that was the death sentence. Such murders, committed by civilians, were not uncommon in occupied Poland. Also with the slave workers in Germany or in the occupied countries.
Many german songs are beautiful. It's a shame that a lot of young, new artists go into the rap direction and sing about commiting crimes and whatnot. I wish there would be more people who sing about nice stuff instead of that. This is the reason why i barely listen to the radio anymore. But i guess times are changing, as well as the people's taste in music. Greetings from germany!
Translation to English from a German. As accurate as I could get it, keeping in mind it contains old German: I am a soldier, yet I am not willingly When I became one, no one asked me They forcibly took me, into the barracks I was captured, like a wild animal hunted Yes, away from home, away from my sweethearts heart I had to leave and from the circle of friends When I think about it, I feel the pain of wistfulness Feel in the chest the burning rage of anger so hot I am a soldier, but only with reluctance I do not love it, the blue kings coat I do not love the bloody life of weapons Oh tell me, why do you need soldiers? Every nation loves just tranquility and peace Solely out of lust for power and to the detriment of the nation Let you trample, oh, the golden fields I am a soldier, must march day and night Instead of working I have to stand guard Instead of freedom I must salute And must see the arrogance of cheeky lads And if I go into the field I have to murder brothers Of whom none did me any harm For that, as a cripple, I wear a ribbon and a medal And then, starving I shout: I was a soldier! All you brothers, whether German or French Whether Hungarians, Danish or from the Netherlands Whether green, red, blue or white the trousers Instead of lead, give each other a brotherly hand in greeting Let's march back to our homeland Free our people from the tyrants Because only tyrants have to wage wars Soldier of freedom, I would like to be Soldier of freedom, I would like to be.
I am a soldier, but I don't like being one, When I became one, they didn't ask me. They tore me away, into the barracks, I was captured, hunted like a deer. Yes, from my home, from my sweetheart's heart I had to leave, and from the circle of friends. When I think of it, I feel the pain of melancholy, I feel anger burning so hot in my breast. I am a soldier, but only with reluctance, I do not love it, the blue royal coat. I do not love it, the bloody life of arms, A stick would be enough to defend me. O tell me, why do you need soldiers? Every nation loves peace and quiet. Only out of lust for power and to the detriment of the people Let you trample, alas, the golden meadow! I am a soldier, must march day and night, Instead of work I must stand guard, Instead of freedom I must salute And must see the arrogance of insolent lads. And if I go into the field, I have to kill brothers, None of whom did me any harm, But as a cripple I'll wear my ribbon and medal, And starving I'll cry out: I was a soldier! All you brothers, whether German or French, Hungarians, Danes, Dutch, Whether green, whether red, whether blue, whether white pants, Give each other a brotherly hand instead of lead! Let us march back to our homeland, Free our people from the tyrants, For only tyrants must wage war, I will gladly be a soldier of freedom.
There is one mistranslation which i think is a very important difference!! "mich zu verteid'gen, wär genug ein stock" Is "to defend myself a stick *would* be enough" not "will" which is an expression about how you only need those advanced weapons because "they" have tham and they only have them because you have them..
