For Mein Alte Kamerade, Klaus: His father was an SS Captain, who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Swords and Oakleaves. To this day, so far as I know; that medal is in the guttering of a 3-storey building bordering Kurfurstendam and another Strasse in Berlin (if that building still stands). Klaus joined the French Foreign Legion at age 17, and became an FFL Parachutist of the 1st FFL Parachute Regiment at age 18. What he saw there during his service I Hope-and-Pray My Son and his Children never have to see. In some ways, Klaus was not proud of his father's service in the SS Brandenburg Division; notwithstanding that he was proud that his father had Served and was a Veteran. But, (Imho): Blood is Blood: and Klaus rightly remains Proud that his father had served Germany, as Klaus had served France. I know my sentiments are NOT popular in this day and age, day and era. SO BE IT. I Acknowledge here a Brave Man who was Friend to Me , and who had seen and witnessed things I hope My Son and his children never see. So, to you who in the future read this post: Please do not take it as condoning what Klaus or his father did. Nor what I've done, for that matter. Please: simply Accept this post as one (now old) Man acknowledging the Friendship and Compassion mutually shared between himself and another, who also happened to be a Veteran. its a fact... in Dien Bien Phu lots of foreignn soldiers escaped the battle. The ones that stood strong besides the french soldiers were the german members of the foreign legion. Tje orders were given in french, but the attack started with hurra. Although many retentions exists, i thank the french for preserving the tradition of germans fighting for france ...

He officially represented France, and as a defender of Verdun, no one could call him a coward. As far as the Legion is concerned, there was only one unit based in Britain who fought for De Gaulle, the Rest was loyal to Petain, thats a fact. I have a lot respect for all Soldiers of armed forces fighting for their country - as long as they fight in uniform and can be recognized as enemies. They deserve to be protected if they become prisoners. But making use of partisans (like the Resistance) as De Gaulle did, is simply a crime. That doesnt lower his merit as a leader of official French Units.Just remember what you did with rebells in civilian gear in Algeria, and so acted the German Army as well. But this Video is about the Legion and so I think, those former German Soldiers fighting in Indochina for France did their duty well,as they were expected to do and therefore I am greatful to France for preserving some of their songs from this time. But there were many Germans in the Legion since its inception - it was created in 1831 from the German Regiment Hohenlohe - and legionaries sang in German before the Indochina during the first GM of the British officers liaison in North Africa were stunned to hear the soldiers 'French' sing 'Anne-Marie' in German.

That song is from 1809, more than 100 years before the Wehrmacht was founded. Plus, after ww2 many former Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS soldiers and many Kriegsweisen went to the french foreign legion, because they saw no other way to escape the poverty of Germany, that's why much of the legion's traditions are actually german armed forces traditions.
some history for you.................after WWII many wehrmacht and waffen ss went to the foriegn legion. i forget the percentage of how much of the legion was comprised of old german soldiers BUT they had a huge impact on the culture of the foreign legion and the legion adopted many things from the german legionarres.
