To support NASA's commitment to improve aviation safety, the Icing Branch at NASA's Glenn Research Center has developed in-flight icing education and training aids for pilots and operators. The goal is to assist pilots in their decision-making abilities by providing information backed by research and by partnering with regulatory agencies and pilot organizations to ensure that the material is relevant and practical for each intended pilot audience.

I've flown for 1200 hrs and encountered my first icing situation over Albuquerque, NM about 2 months ago. Not fun... light to moderate clear ice. It immediately knocked 20 kts off my airspeed. Fortunately I had an immediate out to the east from the precip, but had to fly another 2 hours in the clouds looking at that ice on my wings before it finally dissipated. I was stupid because I could have diverted just a little to the east and missed all that. I was just above freezing at 12000', but ATC gave me a climb to 13000', and it happened FAST. Never again... GREAT video.

Are there aircraft with no deice/antiice that are C4FIKI
@1compaqedr8
@1compaqedr8 5 лет назад
@WPLU572 Trunked Radio Adding de-icing to a single engine GA aircraft would be cost-prohibitive and heavy vs just getting a higher category aircraft that has a FIKI system already. I'm just learning things still studying for ppl, but that is my thoughts.

Thank you for posting this. This is bar-none the best video I've ever seen for icing encounters. This will surely save lives.

I should be dead. Wish I dad known some of this info. From the IAF I ran into Extreme icing. Full throttle in an Archer II through the procedure turn. So much ice. My CFII wanted to put a notch of flaps, I wouldn't let him. All I could do was was minimize the buffeting. Again, full throttle to touchdown 50 ft short of the runway. No damage.Taxied off and had a tractor tow us in. FBO owner and FAA tower came down to take pics. No one could believe we made it. 3+ in of ice on everything.

Watching this and other crash videos, so many of them are stalls. Our training includes stall recognition and recovery, but not a massive emphasis on totally avoiding them. Good to know how to recover from a stall, for sure. Don`t stall, but if you do stall, this is how you recover, no worries. The massive problem with that training is the only time you are likely to stall, ever, is on takeoff, you die. On landing, you die. Icing, you die. Twin engine, single engine failure, you die. Most other times you will rarely ever get anywhere near a stall speed, so the stall recovery will not save you in most cases where you do stall. Tell me I am wrong. Not enough training as well on the actual stall speeds at the different angle of bank in turns. Flat an level, flaps, no flaps, all documented, but what is the stall speed of the aircraft in a turn. I think Dan Gryder has that right, that we are not training GA pilots to properly understand their planes stall limits. Best takeaway from this video, as with most, `fly the plane``.

Well,I've told all my students about ice as I lived this flying nite freight in conus.most this k I'm telling tall tails; then I tell them about the dead line pilots I've known...and the ones who tried on thunder storms found in the ground crumple up like a soda can.watch the facial expression change...then they get it.only takes once to scare the sh.. out of you....

The colder the temperature the less super-cooled water droplets there are in the air. The less super cooled water droplets, the less ice on your plane.

No ice possible outside clouds??? What about hoar frost and freezing rain? Even flying around a thunderstorm downwind can present possible icing conditions.
@davidwhite8633
@davidwhite8633 5 лет назад
FlyingThereAndBack Not to mention the possible sudden accumulation of frost when descending from a long flight at high altitude into a humid lower level by a cold-soaked aircraft.

I was a bit surprised that "Greg" said the regulations have been revised to define 'known icing', which isn't the case. 14 CFR 91.527 is the only regulatory reference for operating in known icing conditions but that only applies to airplanes operating in under Subpart F of Part 91 for large and turbine-powered multi-engine airplanes & Fractionals. FAA/NTSB case law is the only place you can see how they rule for smaller GA, and that is on a case-by-case basis. Definitions to be aware of are the difference between 'known icing' and 'known icing conditions'. Adherence to 91.7 (What does the POH say), 91.13 (Acting careless/reckless), and 91.103 (Proper preflight and wx brief) is how the FAA will evaluate your compliance as a "reasonable and prudent pilot" in making the correct go/no-go decision prior to departure, or making correct in-flight decisions should ice be encountered. (References: Jan 16, 2009 FAA Chief Counsel Letter of Interpretation for Known Ice and for us older pilots, a re-review of AIM 7-1-21 and 7-1-22). Regardless - video provides excellent information and DON'T GET IN IT if not trained and equipped!! ~Pacific NW Pilot

Oh, could have looked at the time stamp on the video in the description 8 months ago, but it doesn't matter to me now. I watched it for information on a school project based around the deicing of planes. I hope you are slowly coming to the realization that you responded to an 8 month old comment.

Angle of attack too high corresponds to a low airspeed? That's what the video said at 40:45. Is this always true? Can't an airplane stall at "any" speed? Can't we exceed the critical angle of attack at "any" speed? Flight path in relation to it's "relative" wind. Thoughts anyone?

Near the end of this video, I too had this happen making an ILS approach about 1am at KDSM in a PA30 Twin Comanche due to a temp inversion w/o any de-ice or anti-ice systems. I hope I never have to go through this again. Remember, ALWAYS Fly the Plane no matter what.

I was not aware that ice was the cause of the Colgan Air crash. I know ice was present at the time, but that it didn't accumulate enough to cause control problems. Seems unlikely that so many draconian regulations and experience requirements would emerge from an accident caused solely by ice. I was under the impression that pilot error "inattention" was the culprit in the Colgan crash.

Read the last couple of pages they had no idea any ice had built up on the aircraft once they put the gear down the thing stalled from 2300 feet no time to recover when they still didn't know what was happening. From the time the stick shaker alerted them to a stall it was too late 27 million $ aircraft and 50 dead because of ice.

Well, since the student made a statement to the camera describing the extent of the icing they found after landing, I'd say, yeah, they made it. Either that or this is an episode of "Paranormal Activity". (Yeah, I know I just responded to a 5 year old comment but, hey, better late than never!)

Obviously the best action for icing is to avoid it... but if you encounter it...what is the time range it takes for the ice to build up before the airplane falls out of the sky? 5-30 min? or? Anybody with personal experience in this horrid encounter? Assuming you do not have de-icing equip...
