iClone 7 Holding Musical Instruments - Two Handed Props

Two methods, one very simple with the other being a little more complicated to make the hands stay on the instrument or object. Also how to add basic animation with masks. The second method also works for two handed props like weapons, poles, brooms and shovels. Project File for first method:

Thanks for the tutorial! You can also link the dummy first to de bone and then align its position and rotation, then unlink it, so you don't loose them after targeting the bone.

I am defo gonna try this project out. If I can improve on this project I will try and upload a follow up tutorial. I have only had iclone for a year and I am still learning so I might have the turial uploaded before Christmas. *Superb tutorial by the way. you're a great inspiration.*

Hello Good Night...would there be any video of how the guitar with the character was imported into IClone or both were already imported with the same and the character holding the guitar in Character Creator and then exported to IClone 7? On a closer look at your Motion Puppet panel I note just above your *mask* window you have two small arrows pointing in opposite directions. Also just before the word *preset* you have what looks like letter *"m"* at 90 degrees. I do not have this on my iClone 7. I have checked for updates and it looks like I am already uptodate. I have version 7.1.1116

I now have the same version but this was made before I updated to the 7.1.1116 release. I also had beta test versions on my system at that time. My puppet screen doesn't look that anymore. The right-left arrows and whatever was on the left side are gone now.

do you mean you have not tried the Motion Puppet in version 7.1.1116? Meanwhile I have reported this problem to the iClone tech support. I even sent them a very short video showing my actions with the. Motion Puppet.

I've used the Motion Puppet since the update and the tutorial file still reacted the same. Tech support should get you sorted out and the video will be helpful to them. Good luck.

OK I got the Motion Puppet in Iclone v 6.53 working fine. I can record one animation and the layer another one over it with parts of the body masked.

btw I am using different character and my own guitar. The reason being when I use any of the Motion Puppet animation the character has some voice script that plays and I did not know how to turn it off. I Started the project using the Edit Motion Layer to set the hands in position.

Hey could you ever do a tutorial on getting a character to play piano and realistically hit each piano note??

I think that would require advance scripting that is not available in iClone since every song would be different. You would basically have to teach the script to play the keyboard and interpret the song. It's possible to key frame each movement but that would be very tedious. Thanks for watching!!!

Ok I gave this go but the masking of the hands did not work for me. When you use the cheer and anger motions for the hands the masking does not work on my software as it does on yours. Don't you have to layer the hand animations somehow? When I use the eraser to mask out all of the body bar the hands I only see the hand animate. If I take off the masking then the whole character is either angry or cheering. I have a feeling you missed out something at the start of the tutorial

The animation is "layered". Each run adds to the current animation if you keep the previously animated parts masked out. I would not have achieved the final result had I left something out. If you animate the hands then make sure the hands are masked out the next run. If that next run animates the arms or legs then make sure the arms or legs and the hands are masked out the on the run after that. You have to set a new mask or you will overwrite prior runs each time you add a new motion. When you switch motions from angry to something else then the masks are cleared and have to be set again. iClone has a searchable, online manual. Check it out. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn from it.
