(Almost 8 yrs since original post) Thanks for showing it scan! I search and search through various radio videos just trying to see the dang scan speed. Also, I think the info sheet is in case you get trapped in the wilderness it can double as a blanket ... or a tent. (Updated note after ordering one during Cyber Monday sale.) I believe the very first setting in the extended menu, which is entered by holding the SET button while turning on the radio, allows you to KILL the BEEEEEEEP.

Thank you for sharing. I bought a KW 281 A then discovered that the Icom 2300H was a better radio then I purchased the Icom. Now I have a 2300H as main radio and a KW281A back up in my other 4wd.

Amending my comment from 6 months ago. I bought this transceiver in December. Been using it in my car and I love it. I'll be doing a video on it later today after months of using it. Very impressed with it. Great video too, it actually did help me decide on it.

Dave, thank you for your video. It was very resourceful and uplifting to now someone like you takes the time and give their opinions on this item of interest. I am thinking about purchasing this radio myself. Please, keep up the good work that you are doing, for guys like us that are new to the Radio World. :)

I had this radio for a short period of time and I believe it has the most features of all the 2m only radios, I liked the fact you can control the radio from the mic. I also had the kenwood 281a that has fewer features and slightly lower price however I think that radio had slightly better audio reports, I broadcasted back to back on both radios and people reported the kenwood sounded a tad better

If I'm correct I believe you can turn off the beeping by powering it off and holding set and power when Turing on and press set until you get to "beep on"
@MangoMike316
@MangoMike316 9 лет назад
You can disable the audio beep in the initial set and it will not be heard when you push any of the buttons. Nice review.

The notification beeps that you complained about can be turned off in “initial settings” mode (which is different from the normal settings mode).

NIce review. helping me when I wanted to make it as my mobile radio in my car replacing my 2200. the size is small enough for rig. the extramic can control almost all feature of the radio. volume, squelch, power level, adjusting frequecy, memory etc ... great radio ... oya, the volume knob's issue happen in many icoms like 2100, 2200, 2300 ...

Appreciate your feedback. I've had feedback that taught me a couple things since I made the video, for example the wiggle in the volume knob is probably intended to cushion it against vibration when used mobile. I've thought about re-doing the video, then I watch it again and decide it's still good. Glad it was helpful for you.

Good day, bought this radio and installed it in the jeep. I do like it, however, when i put the power level up say to 25watts on one channel, if i switch to another channel it reverts back to lower power level setting. any way to turn that off so it stays at the power level i pick while flipping through channels? thanks for the help.

Just got 1 of these 4 my 1st rig. The paper sheet left alot to be desired, and thought there would be more than just 2 pdf's on the cd. Now a video like this, explaining basic programming on it, would go a long way if it were on the cd itself. Also where do u look to find the genuine 3d icom label?

Thank you for your very thorough review of this Icom 2300H radio. I'm thinking of buying this for my car, and to double as a home base station with a 12v battery setup. How are you liking this radio now in 2017? Is it holding up well for you and still functioning well? Thanks.
@wilbodave
@wilbodave 7 лет назад
Still like it and it's still functioning without problems. If you do decide on it, you may want to buy or make a quick reference for the functions you don't program very often. I programmed mine with the software and cable when I bought it, and recently participated in a deployment exercise of our county's storm spotters. I hadn't paid close enough detail to the planning email, and we tested communications from different watch points on a couple of repeaters I didn't have programmed, and I couldn't remember how to program it from the face. It's not hugely difficult, but not something you can do under pressure without having done it recently.

I have the IC-2200H, That I bought in 2007. It was actually Made in Japan and the knobs are MUCH better and more solid. Q. Was your 2300 made in China? This is likely the difference.

I just got mine a few days ago. Still made in Japan. The knobs are supposed to wiggle for shock absorption and they don’t feel cheap at all.

Thanks for a great review! What power supply do you use for this radio if using it as a base station at home? Can you plug into cigarette lighter if using mobile?
@wilbodave
@wilbodave 10 лет назад
You're welcome. It's my first (and currently only) RU-vid video. My power supply is the Alinco DM-330MV. You probably could use a cigarette lighter jack for mobile use, but I don't recommend it. The Icom draws 11 Amps at high power TX; check your vehicle's manual to see what your lighter jack is rated. I personallly would not power a mobile radio that way unless it was an emergency. I have a 10 gauge power cable from the battery with a fuse near the battery connection, and the negative side grounded under the dash. I connected my power leads to the radio using Anderson Power Poles. If I want to swap my radio for one that draws more current, I'm already set.
@Paramedicpr835
@Paramedicpr835 4 года назад
Read the Icom 2300h users manual. One of the first things it says on the warning section is that you should NEVER use a cigarette lighter jack for this radio because of the amount of current the radio draws and the heat that can result from that. Wire it correctly and you can use a quick disconnect if you plan to move it between vehicles or from vehicle to home.

Do you know if it will do an odd split? We have a few 1m split repeaters around here. Also will it program out of freq. I'd like to be able to use it on AuxNet.
@davewilson7480
@davewilson7480 9 лет назад
buzzsah I think all currently produced radios have a quick function for repeater offset, but all can be programmed for odd splits. If memory serves, the auto split can be set to whatever you want.

Are these better than CB radios and are alot of truckers switching to this versus CBs? I don't know which one I want,cb or this radio. Could you help?
@wilbodave
@wilbodave 7 лет назад
This radio operates on an amateur (ham) radio band, and requires a license to operate, and you have to take a (fairly easy but requires some study) exam to obtain the license. I've had my license since 2013, and I have never heard a trucker on 2 meters. CB is on the band that is referred to as 11 meters (the length of the radio wave), and is restricted to 4 watts AM or SSB. The Icom operates in the 2 meter band, and this radio is FM only and outputs up to 65 watts. If you operate this radio without a license / valid call sign, it's unlikely anyone would talk to you, except to tell you that you are operating illegally, and to get off the frequency. If you're interested in radio, I suggest you visit the website of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) at www.arrl.org .

@wilbodave
@wilbodave 7 лет назад
I suspect the Kenwood TM-281A is probably a decent radio, but there were a couple of differences that made me decide on the Icom. I do have a Kenwood dual band mobile that I use as a base radio, and I'm mostly happy with it. I think for the most part, Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu all make decent equipment, and it's mostly a matter of individual preference.

@NarenMariappan

Battery powered. Its to be avoid harmonics or other back emf from home source. Do you see a red and black wire behind the radio. It goes down to a battery!
@rrrandommman
@rrrandommman 5 лет назад
There are no stupid questions when you're learning. You can use a 12v battery, a switch mode power supply, or a linear power supply, as long as they can provide enough Amps, and output 13.8 Volts.
@profgyland2
@profgyland2 6 лет назад
I suggest you purchase a tripod instead of another HAM radio. Your picture wobbles and makes people seasick.
