ICOM 7300 CW QSO
Amateur ham radio CW Morse QSO party
I setup the 7300 do do cw morse coding and decoding using N1MM sofware.
Icom IC 7300 is Icom's latest SDR HF/50 MHz Transceiver. It offers 100W of power and receives from 0.030 to 74.800 MHZ. It operates on SSB, CW, RTTY, AM and FM modes. The Icom IC-7300 features a RF direct sampling system, 15 discrete band-pass filters, a real-time spectrum scope and a large 4.3" color touch screen display. Additional features of the IC-7300 include a built-in automatic antenna tuner, 101 channels, SD memory card slot and 3 CW functions. In the box you will find the IC-7300 transceiver, a HM-219 hand microphone, DC power cable, fuses and plugs.
Output power: 100W (25W AM)
RX Frequencies: 0.030-74.800
RF direct sampling system
The IC-7300 employs an RF direct sampling system, where RF signals are directly convert to digital data. Then processed in the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array), making it possible to simplify the circuit construction as well as reduce noise that can mask weak signals.
The new “IP+” improves the 3rd order intercept point (IP3) performance improving the ability to copy a weak signal that is adjacent to either a strong interfering signal. In this process, A/D converter is optimized to reduce or eliminate signal distortion.
RMDR and phase noise characteristics
The IC-7300’s RMDR is about 97dB* (typical value) improving the Phase Noise characteristics by about 15dB (at 1 kHz frequency separation). The superior Phase Noise characteristics reduce noise components for both receive and transmit signals.
At 1 kHz frequency separation (received frequency: 14.2MHz, MODE: CW, IF BW: 500Hz)
15 discrete band-pass filters
The RF Direct Sampling is protected by an array of bandpass filters. The signal passes through one of the fifteen bandpass filters, where signals outside the passband are rejected. To reduce the insertion loss, the IC-7300 utilizes High Q factor coils.
Large color touch screen
The large 4.3” color TFT touch LCD offers intuitive operation of functions, settings, and various operational visual aids such as the band scope, waterfall function, and audio scope.
Like on the high-end rigs, the waterfall shows a change of signal strength over a period of time and allows you to find weak signals that may not be apparent on the spectrum scope.
Use the audio scope function to observe various AF TX/RX characteristics such as microphone compressor level, filter width, notch filter width and keying waveform in the CW mode. Image below shows the Audio scope with the waterfall function and the oscilloscope.
Real-Time spectrum scope
You no longer have to choose whether to listen to the audio or have the spectrum scope sweep for signals as the IC-7300’s real-time spectrum scope offers the simultaneous operations found in some of the more expensive rigs! This means you can use either the spectrum scope or the waterfall to quickly move to an intended signal while listening to the receiver audio. The ‘7300’s touch screen introduces a “Magnify” function. So, when you first touch the scope screen around the intended signal, the touched part is magnified. A second touch of the scope screen changes the operating frequency and allows you to accurately tune.

Tom, you are helping others by put CW on your video. It does get stressful at times trying to think of something to say that is new. Tom you are butting all your teaching skills in how conduct yourself on the air ways. 73 cheers & Beers.

Thanks for this and your other videos. They are helping me immensely. I am currently struggling with getting my CW copying up to par. I can send just fine, know all the codes, and can send out thoughts fairly seamlessly, but the copying is killing me. Videos like this help a lot with copying. My struggle is when I miss something - I shutdown and loose more copy until I regain my composure. It is stressful.

I do find it stressful also. I will say I learned more in my car listening to pre-recorded letters than anywhere else. Just listen all the time and decode in your head.

CW rag chewing is an 'art', but mainly developed through lots of practice and of course loads of CW contacts ;-)... rubber stamp QSO's are a great way of getting comfortable using CW. Thanks for the video, 73

Great video! I am learning CW, and have been working at it about a year now. I’m up to 15 wpm. I’m a member of the Samuel F. Morse Amateur Radio Club of Sacramento, California. I enjoy your channel. W6MRD

My license expired 12 years ago. Now I live in the woods of Northern Michigan and have the ham radio bug again. I will retest in late Spring or early summer. I have no rig at the moment but I plan to buy the IC7300. I love CW and a straight key. I'm only capable of 20wpm and I don't see getting beyond that. I will be using a 3 band vertical about 25 feet up and a 80/40 inverted v with the apex at 24 feet. I may have problems with swr and have to use a tuner. At least it can get me started.
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 3 года назад
Hey don't worry about 20WPM, that's a good fun speed. I sit around 18 comfortably. I got the 5Band vertical from Hustler but I'm yet to install it. Good comment amigo.

Thanks for sharing the video Tom, The way your videos are set up currently, do help me understanding and listening to CW. Your keying speed is not high - and this meant in a positive way - it makes me actually able to listen and read what is being transmitted / received. Great job :) For some reason, but that might be me, the audio seems a bit distorted, which does means the cw-tones aren't clean. Undoubtly this is way better 'live' --... ...-- -.. . .--. -.-. ....- .- -..

Good vid. I work only cw. Topics to bring up during a qso can be how long you have been doing cw, how long you have been a ham, ask them what kind of cw key they are using, mention the kind of key you are using, ect. Tell the other guy that you are trying to get better at cw and your current operating max speed at cw. Ask him if he head copies or writes everything down? And tell him how you do it. You can ask if he has a SKCC number, and switch to your straight key to send your number if he does. Lots of things you can talk abt in a cw QSO. The skcc frequently is 7055 and there is almost always someone willing to work you there. I love cw and like your vids, hpe to wrk you sometime, 73 DE kb5zcr

Just great for a cw beginner! If you could only make more of such films - cw qso with subtitles! I was copying side by side with you ... and succeded copyng 100! Rigwise, I was always Icom fan, but it seems that Yaesu is beating Icom on low and mid-cost segments. But I still feel like heading for IC-7610.

Also, just one point of constructive criticism, when you send the word "name" you ran your "m" and "e" together, this make it sound like your sending a "g" instead of "me". So it sounds like you are sending Nag instead of name. Keep it up, practice makes perfect, the more cw QSOs you do, the easier it gets.
