TNX. This is absolutely the best video I've seen for getting the settings right. I've made hundreds of home improvement videos and really am grateful you went to this effort to help me get on the air digitally.
Thank you. A clear and very helpful tutorial. I've loaded WSJT-X 2.5.4 and the settings have made all the difference getting the program to work. I'll find out if the changes affect FS8Call in due course.
Thank you for knowing how to demonstrate at a slow pace for us beginers. I was able to follow you and got operational immediately after I Watched your video. I have a new ICOM 7300 and was helped both with FT-8 and the ICOM setup. Your video was excellent. I recommend your Video as the others were not as concise and were presented to fast. Thank you, William/W2WC
Great explanation! I was trying for ever to configure my IC 7100 and ran across this video as there are none for my rig. Used your basic recipe and presto got my rig up. Cheers!
Just a quick Thank you! I have been trying to set up my IC7300 without success. Watched MANY RU-vids; could not figure it out... till I saw the SOLUTION in YOUR video. DATA MOD --> USB (Default is ACC) . That was it! Thank you again. Other videos said the baud rate MUST be 9600... NOPE; I am running as you 115200, fine.
The first 3 minutes show about 44 steps(less editing) you took in checking or changing settings before getting back to main menu. Then I stopped counting for the remainder of the setup. Simple lol. Not saying this is difficult...just an unusually long process I find. Cmon software guys/programmers...really? But kudos to you for explaining it very well!
It is a bit of a tedious process, i agree. Admittedly, I go over several settings that have no effect on running FT8 but i found it easier to do a video simply going down the whole list in the menu rather than explaining where each setting is. Thanks for your comment, and hopefully they come up with a more straight forward way in the future! 73!
I used this to get JS8CALL working on my 7300. Had to run through it step by step a few times but eventually got it. You do have to translate between the different programs but it works ! One hassle was that windows was in the process of updating to Version 1903 Win !0. Really goofed up the USB Driver process. If that is happening, wait till it complete. Two large updates, second one restarts a number of times. Until its finished nothing will work correctly.
Glad it helped! Im not much of a video maker really but every so often i get the steam to make one. I dont use the RSBA1 software but i will keep that in mind if that ever changes! Happy hamming!
@@Hawk-1291 problem is you have to have 2 separate menu settings for sdr and regular operation and 1 menu setting for ft8, they are supposedly making a firmware update to just have a ft8 menu setting..
Glad I could help! That's the really awesome part of this hobby; the community can be so great and helpful! Happy to be able to put back into the hobby that has helped me so much! Also glad this video is still relevant. There have been updates to the radio firmware as well as WSJT-X but i guess there is still enough here to be useful. Thanks for your comment! 73
i just got my radio a week ago but your settings where spot on,only problem i had was i had to set the rec speakes real low to get them out of red, couldnt see much on 10 meter but worked fine in 40 thank you for taking the time to make this work! 73 KD9LOM
I don't own this radio yet but very impressed. Are you able to store all these settings so that when using other modes and returning there is no need to set it all up again? This should apply to all modes, I hope.
I have been meaning to do a video on this very thing. The 7300 actually has 3 what i like to call "active memories" for each band. You can set your settings such as mode, freq, AGC, filter width, etc. and by tapping the band stacking register and selecting the same band you will be editing a new set of settings. When you select the same band 3 times you are brought back to the first one you set up. So for instance if i am on 40 meters and I select 40 meters again it will go to the next settings memory. I have one set for FT8, one for SSB and one for CW. All this is done in VFO mode independent from any memory channels in the radio. It is a really nice feature to have when switching modes often! Now the menu settings are not affected but they should not need to change very often once they are set.
I am wondering about the USB SEND/Keying - USB SEND = RTS. That setting messes with my use of Log4OM, when I return to normal USB mode. Using CAT forces the unit into Transmit !! Fix is to reset USB SEND = OFF.
The latest IC-7300 firmware added a USB Sending / Keying setting: “Inhibit Timer At USB Connection” with an On/Off option. Any recommendations? 73 and thanks... KK6RXS
All was well with me, until I foolishly updated my 7300 firmware. Anyone knowing the necessary settings would be hugely appreciated. For now, I get only one successful QSO then it stops transmitting - so strange, everything works yet no modulation - no power out. Can't get it to go back on. Strange.
Unfortunately I have been moving things around lately and haven't had time to run the 7300 nor update its firmware, so I have no answer for you. Sorry.
WOW, a very excellent video. This is the way they all should be. BTW, are you using a separate CV-I cable and if so are there any changes if I am only using a single USB cable for the 7300 to the computer?
Thanks for your kind words! I am using only the USB cable in this video so you shouldn't need to do anything different if you are running it with only the USB. Thanks for watching! 73
Another question: I made it all the way through to the audio capture devices and ALC setting and then I got lost. Can you explain to me in a little more detail what and how I finish this off? I am running Windows 10 AND FT8 2.0. I am deeply indebted to you for this fantastic video! Greg Saiter. KO8A
@@gregsaiter3768 Im actually not familiar with how to set it up in Windows but I have a friend who is. I will ask him how to get the USB audio levels and ALC going on Windows. I will reply here when i have an answer for you!
I made the mistake with my 7300 and the settings got lost. It was my understanding that when operating on FT8, it's necessary to operate in split mode. How can I find what the split frequency should be?
This could be any number of things, but the software is not seeing the radio. Typically, when I get that error, my USB port number changed because I plugged a new USB device in. If you have other options under "serial port" try a different USB port (/dev/ttyUSBx). Also check that the baud rate in the radio matches the baud rate in the software. I used 115200 in this video.
hard to say what the exact problem is but check your physical usb connection. Also try a restart of the computer. If you are using the usb cable alone without the CI-V Cable (which is how i did it in this video) make sure DATA MOD is set to USB. Also double check your settings under CI-V match those in my video at 2:00. Check your serial port setting in WSJTX.
I have set everything as you said but I car receive and decode signals but it won't go into transmit. When I tap tune or tx I get a message that it says Rig control error. Any suggestions?
It seems like i had a similar problem at one time with that. Try shutting down your computer and turn the radio off. Turn the radio on first (with it plugged into the computer) then turn the computer back on. double check your settings on the radio and WSJTX, also make sure your USB port did not change since reboot. If that doesn't fix it i have seen some reports that some of the recent firmware versions made changes that are making these settings not work anymore. I have not been running the 7300 in my shack to confirm this.
@@Hawk-1291 Thanks for getting back to me. No change after reboot. I am running Ver 1.30 firmware on my 7300. I will keep plugging away. I know its somewhere in the settings. I will figure it out. I always say my persistence with beat its resistance.
So, I got some things to work, but when I transmit, I still get nothing on my ALC meter. The 7300 kicks into transmit mode, and the waterfall gives the apearance of an outgoing signal, but nothing on the ALC. :(
@@tglenn3121 Check that your computer is using the correct sound device in audio outputs(in the operating system not WSJTX). It may be trying to send the transmit audio to a different device or it may be turned down too low. Try raising the level and check that it is not muted. you might also try adjusting the 'USB MOD Level' setting to a higher value. That setting increases the modulation level of audio coming over the USB cable. Note also, that the goal in my video is to not have any ALC showing. But do proceed if you are trying to have it peaked just before the ALC starts to kick in.
No. for the most part these setting wont affect voice modes. I think the filter stays wide (not necessarily a bad thing, and easily changed) and your AGC will need to be turned back on. (also easily done) none of the menu settings should affect other operating modes.
@@Hawk-1291 I'm trying to set up the radio for contests and would need to quickly change between FSK & SSB ~ is there not a setting/memory to hold FSK setup - invoked when you select Data & SSB settings when you return to SSB ~ no need to change other settings - everything done on the Mode change?
@@robbo9592 depends which settings but there is a feature on the 7300 that allows you to switch operating modes and settings on the fly. It works like this: open the band stacking register, select the band you want to operate on (say 40 meters for example) after you have selected 40 meters you are taken to the last frequency and mode you were using. if you then go back to the band stacking register and select 40 meters a second time it will take you to a new freq and you can chage the mode and other operating settings. if you select 40 meters a third time you will have a third "register" to set another mode and freq. going to 40 mewters a 4th time will return you to the first register. Page 3-3 of the operting manual mentions the stacking registers. play with them a litte and see if this gives you the desired ability.
Great video but I lost you at the end about the meter in lower left corner and the capture device menu and ALC meter. I'm 90% there but having small issues.
no problem! maybe i can help. In the video i am using Linux Mint KDE edition and the menu i show in the video might look different on your operating system. What you want to do is find where you adjust the input and output levels of your computer devices. On Windows it is under Settings> System> Sound> Advanced Sound Options. Then i was saying to adjust those settings while watching the ALC meter on the radio so that the radios ALC meter doesnt show activity. does that help?
Check all connections and make sure that the usb device is enabled under devices in Windows. also check that the correct port is selected in WSJTX. finally check that the correct driver is selected in WSJTX. If you stilll have issues you could try running WSJTX as administrator.
