Just did a mates 746pro - uploaded quick youtube video - I replaced the transistor with a BD650 and set the backlight to 100% so it doesnt blow out again - hardest part is actually pulling the radio apart - getting the transistor out and changed is tricky, but not impossible. I use my solder station, fine tip, set to 450C and with additional solder to help flux and desolder the transistor.

I realise this is an old video but very useful, just been given one of these rigs, I think I will mount the dimmer transistor somewhere else. They are notorious for failing.....
yes there was no warranty left so the repair had to be done by me, 55 pence part by the way and the bulb was £20. I put this video up to maybe help others with the same prob as it is common(so icom said on the phone)the radio is 100% working and happy now:)
yes i made the mistake of not checking the bulb first but it will most probably be the reg as they get very hot! the one i replaced was blue because of the heat, this is why i used heat compound:) regards..
Leave the display setting on 100% too PREVENT overheating the circuit.A friend & I replaced the surface mount component in my ORIGINAL 746 & it worked GREAT afterwards! }:>)
Seems iCom has a lot of problems. They used to have pretty high quality radios. I swore by them not too many years ago. I can't see spending the money for one these days. They charge far too much for radios that many seem to fail shortly after warranty expiration. Almost a Chrysler, or a Ford. This is a prime example of what occurs when you take a relatively simple device like a radio transceiver and add on all these nonsense functions. KISS, or Keep it simple stupid. iCom needs to wake up.
