Thanks for the vid. New to the '705 and this helped a lot. I find the NOTCH filter particularly useful when someone's sending "something" (tuning signal? digital?) right on top of an SSB signal - you can "notch it out" and not have your eardrums tickled by a constant, high-pitched tone in the middle of voice signal. 73!

I can understand why ICOM took so long to make this little miracle box. I would have given anything to have one of those 30 yrs ago when i could still think and remember and understand computerized radios. Not so much today, cant remember much now.

Another great video, Eric. Your demo of the passband, the notch and the if shift sold me on this radio. I was all set to order the KX3 this morning, but thought I’d better check out the IC-705 thoroughly first. The KX3 is a great radio with its filtering capabilities, but it went on the market in 2013-already 8 years ago! The 705 is a brand new concept and its menus and features nearly duplicate what my 7300 has. So, the filtering, etc. tricks I learn on the 7300 can transfer to the 705. It’s like having an iPad and iPhone that sync and run the same programs, only the one is smaller. The large 4” display screen on both, plus the complete touch screen control cinched me on the 705. Your video really helped! Thanks again. 73, de WB3BIQ.

I’ve found that it’s useful to analyse noise before trying to tune it out. Handily, the IC-705 has the audio display for that (under main/audio) which then shows a frequency scope of the audio on the left hand side. Once I can see where the noise is, it’s easier to try and remove it.

You're lucky to have a demo already... Here in south africa, the "type approval" for new models takes 8+months (call it africa time). So we cant even buy the ic9700 yet, nevermind the 705... Will probably only be legally available here in 2021. Great video btw. Cant wait to get mine. Eric, can you please do a demonstration on the digital mode functionality for the 705. Specifically how the digital modes can be used in the field with a laptop or tablet etc. Since that is its main marketing point, I would love to see it in action.

Nice. I have a IC R8600 and recently purchased a Yaesu FTdx101. Both are SDR's. To my dismay about 1 month after purchasing these two radios my neighborhood has developed such noise on my radios that I am finding them nearly useless at times. Powerline issues maybe. The power company has been out twice and has replaced Poly's or insulators on at least 8 poles. Still the QRM or static is so powerful 80 meters is useless at night and 20 and 40 are marginal throughout the day and evening. I have done many test and the only time I had no overwhelming static on my radios is when hurricane Delta passed by and knocked out the power in the neighborhood. My generator came on and for four hours listening to the radios once again was enjoyable. I live in a semi-country setting. Houses are on 2 to 4 acre lots so I am sure it is not interference from someone's plasma TV or such equipment. I had a Yaesu FTdx 5000, non SDR and I had no issues with the static. However I had no issues until nearly a month after I purchased the 101d and the IC-R8600. I grew up listening to SW as a kid in Alaska. I had hoped to have a good experience with the radio hobby once I retired. No such luck.

@@FFdo. Really? In which context (i.e. just weak on a quiet band or weak sinking in noise/QRM/...? I have a FT-818, thinking about IC-705 as an upgrade for portable operation, for both HF and higher bands (I do VHF SSB a lot, including portable). However, is it really worth? IC-705 has waterfall, some extra features, such as BT, wifi, D-star, GPS, etc., some more radio-related features (filters with changeable width, advanced features (NB, preamp) also on VHF (which FT-818 does miss)) and looks much cooler. But is it worth for the price? I'd tend to think it is, but only in case I won't find out that FT-818 finally receives better, despite all that...

Great radio from Icom, but might be priced too high ( lack of propagation and the economic situation as a whole comes to mind, to sum this up, the wife said no (for now) and the XYL is a ham herself). As for the price, in Australia, it was just been advertised for a whopping A$1849 or about $1,282USD, got the money to burn, great go for it, it's a nice toy, We have decided to wait and keep using our trusty FT817 for now as we feel the hype fails to justify the cost. At home base, we are working with ICOM IC7610, IC 9700, and Yaesu FT 991 ( the wife said yes to those ) and to date, we enjoy them all. This post is not about knocking one's radio or company against others, it is purely about our personal perception of cost v.s value.

I have the Yaesu FT-3D and the AnyTone D878UVPlus. I am using a duplex hotspot to connect them to the internet and sometimes the Yaesu Wires-X cable kit. I live on the 39th floor of a high rise in downtown Denver, CO. I face east. Most of the repeaters are to the west. These HTs cannot consistently hit the nearby repeaters. Obviously, I cannot have a huge antenna (unless I hide it like the one you put in a planter at your mom's house). Would you recommend the IC-705 or another radio to go with the two HTs. I like the portability of the 705 and the fact it would give me D-Star but the low power makes me think that for the money I should get one of these: FTM-300, 991a, AnyTone 578 Icom 9700, or whatever your choice would be. Any thoughts? I am willing to upgrade my license from Tech to General and get help from you on an antenna choice that I could place on the balcony. Thanks. I always enjoy your videos.

I have two questions: 1) Eric, how do you think this one does on HF compared to FT-991a or FT-891, regarding to the receiver/noise reduction/filtering? 2) I am very interested in how this 705 performs on VHF SSB. First, Yaesu rigs (namely FT-8x7) miss the advanced filtering features/options on VHF. When you switch to VHF, most of the features you use on HF to clear noise or dig for weak signals are gone. Does IC-705 support all these for all bands or HF-only, as we are used to on Yaesu rigs? Secondly, Yaesu FT-8x7 are known to be easily overloaded by a nearby strong VHF station, so even if it transmits on 144.200, you don't hear anything with FT-8x7 on 144.250 or even higher, only because you're "lucky" enough and pick wrong QTH. Again, is IC-705 an improvement over FT-818 or FT-991 in this situation? Thanks!

For you QRP fans out there I see they have released the new icom 705 for about $1,300 dollars. But for about $450 dollars you can get a small lightweight QRP size Xiegu G90 transciever with internal antenna tuner that is so good it could probably tune up a head of lettuce, an antenna analyzer, a water fall, and up to 20 watts. However if you save up all your hard earned money, for and extra $850 more dollars you can actually get an icom 705 with no antenna tuner. ??? uh what did you say $850 dollars more of my hard earned money and NO ANTENNA TUNER. ??

Ha ha, look how much the battery dropped in 8 minutes! I own the 7300 and while it's a decent radio the receiver is noisy and the filters are not very good, they reduce audio quality too much without being very effictive. If I compare my FT-891 it's got a far quieter receiver with much better Filters and DNR and best of all it can run 5-100 Watts, yes you need an external battery but I can use a 8.4AH 4S LifeP04 for several hrs on SSB @100W. No big deal. I always listen with headphones and by far the best sounding radio is the 891, with DNR off you get good O'l clean analogue sound which is much more enjoyable to listen to, the 7300 sound is fatiguing. I'm now waiting for the TS-590 SG and selling the 7300, I wouldn't get the 705 because I feel it will sound just as bad. My advice to anyone would be buy a KX2 or Kx3 for that money or FT-891 because all the screens and waterfalls in the world won't make you hear better. Just my opinion.

One great thing about Amateur Radio, among others, is that everyone has an opinion! Your mileage may vary. I own a 7300 and a 10 YO KX-3 I bought new. I love them both, and they serve me well. My opinion. I’ve been a ham for 55 years (I’m 71) and I’ve owned and operated dozens of rigs. We are blessed to live at a time when there are so many relatively affordable choices available. Awesome technology abounds.
