I just got an Icom R-71A off of eBay last week. A capacitor blew up on the 2nd night and I let all the magic smoke out. However, I have a friend that says it's repairable. He's going to fix it in about a month. From what I heard, it sounded great! 73 Paul AA1SU
I think you were right at the end, laptop speakers don't do the RSPdx justice. I listen to mine through some Bose headphones, and the audio is amazing quality. Dollar for $ it's the best radio purchase I ever made, and I've hardly explored any of its capabilities yet.
I have literally just bought one on eBay the 71a, got it for 290 Inc postage, it was serviced as well and in great condition. I've always wanted an old analogue receiver, hoping it'll arrive tomorrow 😀 BTW I also have the RSPdx too, using it on my Old Wellbrook loop.
