When legendary frontman Jim Morrison of The Doors told his band members they should go home and write some songs to fill out their live show and have more to record. Teenage guitarist Robby Kreiger took him seriously and wrote a song that night... Light My Fire. When he brought it into the band they were blown away… thing is today’s Robby not only wrote the music, he also wrote most of the lyrics and that fact has been lost on pretty music everyone who assumes Jim Morrison wrote it. It would take the rookie band to #1 after their first single flopped and it would become one of the greatest songs in rock history…

Well, today we have that guitarist here on the show, as one of the last surviving members of a legendary band he has the story… The song was controversial and was the first hit song to have a guitar and keyboard solo. Hear the story from the legend next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our show revelations where featured artists share rare stories behind their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we have a bonafide guitar legend on the show. he was just a teenager when he joined a rookie band that would change everything and he would end up writing most of what would become the band’s signature song. I’’m talking about Robby Krieger the guitarst of the Doors and their classic masterwork Light My Fire. Jim Morrison challgened the band members of the doors to write songs so they could fill out their live set and their debut album. Robby Went home and wrote Light My Fire and not only did he write the music but also most of the lyrics. and after Break On Through fizzled not even making the charts Light My Fire was the song that would take the Doors to the masses. Robby has the story next as well as stories behind his new album. Let’s get into it. Here’s Robby

Back in the early 90’s I was in the warehouse of the Hollywood Guitar Center, when I heard the organ riff coming from the sales floor. I thought to myself that some kid had really nailed the feel to absolute perfection. A few minutes later as I walked back out to the floor, there was Ray playing on a keyboard. No wonder “that kid” sounded so authentic.

You were born the same year as my beautiful older sister! She's taught me so much over the years. She's 14 years older than me, and she certainly inspired my love of music. When she went off to college, she gave me a portable record player and her 45 singles, mostly early Beatles songs (and I still have those 45s with picture sleeves!). When I was little and my big sis was still at home, I looked forward every week to watching "The Ed Sullivan Show" with her and my older brother. That's where I first saw The Doors, Eric Burdon and the Animals, the Jackson Five, and so many other beloved musicians. The 1960s holds so many good memories for me.

I'm 70 now, I grew up on rock and roll. The Doors, gosh, it didn't get any better. I never got to see The Doors. When Jim Morrison died in 1971, I heard about it while I was driving in Alabama. Trust me when I say that living in Alabama in 1971 was not the best situation. I had to pull over, I couldn't see through the instant tears. Fast forward to Christmas 1974 and I am in the Air Force at tech SC in Wichita Falls TX. I go to a concert alone, Dave Mason (Please Come to Boston) opening act for Jose Feliciano. Wow. Glad I went. Robbie Krieger sure hit it huge with his song. Thank you PoR, another fabulous interview with a living historical figure from Rock Royalty. I swear that you have the most fascinating job ever. My dad hated Light My Fire. I have no idea why, because it's a masterpiece I've loved since I first heard it. But when it was brand new and it was always on the radio, my dad just could not stand it. As my dad tells it, one day they were having a barbecue with some of his navy buddies and one guy just would not stop singing it. When he tells the story, he says in a mocking tone, "Light My Fire, Light My Fire, Light My Fire!" When his buddy was sufficiently inebriated for it to escape his attention, my dad put the grill under (or slightly behind) his chair, doused it in fluid and threw a match on it, saying "I'll light your [insert choice expletive here] fire." As dangerous a stunt as it was, his buddy was uninjured and they all got a hearty laugh out of it.

It was cool to hear Robbie talking about Jim having songs come to him I’ve read a lot of music magazines in my life and so many say songs come to them and my son said it’s like a radio playing in my head constantly, and he said he’s heard songs later on the radio that he heard in his head but a little different, which leads me to believe many musicians are hearing it and the first one to record it and get it out there is the one that gets credit it for it. And we all know some musicians just steal bits from others songs. Love the Doors , thanks as always Adam

Most music I love isn't necessarily the tunes that were at the top of the charts, and were the songs more often called "deep cuts".

I briefly met Robby when I worked for Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks, CA. That store is no longer there, but in the early nineties, while working behind the accessories counter, I got a chance to meet a lot of the stars of the time. They would just come in to buy strings, look at guitars, etc. I remember Robby came in with his little dog on a leash. He had a long coat on and was really quiet. It was so crazy because I had seen and met and even had some popular stars as customers of mine, but I remember being so starstruck I just didn't know what to stay. I loved the doors and the movie had been out around that time. He wasn't my customer that day. I don't remember what he bought or what he looked at. I just remember thinking, wow... that's Robby Krieger from the Doors! All I could muster was a polite hello and he was reciprocally polite as well. Thanks for the cool video and interview with Robby!

Outstanding interview. I love how you share your own experiences with your guests without making the interview about you obviously. That is a real skill, and I’m sure that kind of engagement is why you get top-notch guests on your program. I also do an interview program for public radio in Montana, so I always appreciate someone who has your level of skill.

As a little kid in the 80s, I was always hearing my much older siblings' records. My sister loved Springsteen and Madonna and Weird Al. My oldest brother liked Queen and the Who and Led Zeppelin. And my middle, favorite big brother loved all the interesting things. Devo, Cars, Cyndi, Duran Duran, Grace Jones. Two records in particular, and two songs in particular struck me immediately as being different, and more interesting, and even a bit scary: Rock Lobster by the B-52s, and People Are Strange by The Doors. We would sit on the old vinyl couch or the old braided area rug in the basement and play records for hours and it was like no other place in the world. Rock Lobster felt like riding a flaming train to Hell, and People Are Strange was the sound of the carnival going on once you arrived. Magical.

I was six years old when The Doors played on Ed Sullivan's show, and it's one of my earliest memories. My sister is 14 years older than me, and she was just starting college and about to move out to live in a dorm in Austin while attending UT. She gave me all her 45 singles and a portable record player before she left. I felt like I'd won the lottery! She loved the Beatles and the Doors, especially.

It’s hard to see Robbie so old now. The Doors music is all unique and a classic sound that represents the time of the late 60’s. I can listen to their songs at any time almost 60 years old and it still sounds fresh, interesting and different than anyone else.

Something that hit me during this interview, was that Robbie said a band mate suggested that the song needed a Latin sound. And then, Bam! Jose Feliciano felt that vibe! I love both versions. I would suggest that Robbie and Jose should get together and write some songs, perhaps create a new genre!?

I saw Robby Krieger at a small venue up at Clearlake, CA, called Konocti Harbor Resort, in the early 90’s. It has a larger outdoor amphitheater, but it also has a small indoor venue that’s probably only 1,000 or something. It’s a great place to see a show. Basically, a large bar. Anyway, he had some young Jim Morrison clone on vocals, and it was just a Doors cover band show. It was awesome. Great times.

Last fall, I was in Portland (Oregon) for a family event, having ridden there with my son and daughter-in-law. On the day we headed home, we hit Powell's Books (Powell's is kinda like Amazon in a brick-and-mortar store; it's huge) before leaving town. Having recently, at that time, re-connected with a lot of the music I used to listen to as a teen, I headed for the music section. One of the books I spotted was a paperback that had lyrics to all the songs by the Doors. I thought "I'll bet I know all their lyrics anyway!" but I went ahead and grabbed it. It was a used copy, slightly dog-eared but reasonably priced. I did notice there was some writing in the front but didn't look that closely. When I was looking over it again later, after I got home, I looked at the inscription on the front page again. It said "to (so-and-so) and then just a scrawled signature that I couldn't quite make out at first. But I studied it for a while and I almost got goosebumps when I finally realized the book had been signed by Robby Krieger! The Doors were one of my favorite bands when I was a teen, though that was in the 70s and they had long since dissolved. I had posters of Jim Morrison on my wall--because those were what was available--but I was always aware and appreciative of the role the others played in making the music. Except I hadn't realized how many of their songs actually had lyrics that Robby Krieger had written. That book gave me a better idea, and I prize it, really. It was such a great find! Thank you for having Robby on. I hope there is more to this interview that we will get to hear later. And thank you for all you do to help keep the music alive. I love the stories too, although I didn't have parents who introduced me to the bands or told me the stories. But I did have parents who gritted their teeth, got out of my way, and let me listen to my music and didn't blink when I brought home magazines like "Creem" (although they might have if they'd tried reading them...) Thanks again. I'll be listening!

I was in first or second grade when this song came out. I remember being on the playground at recess and this older girl, probably fifth grade would walk up to my friend and I and sing Come on baby, light my fire” to us. We had no idea at the time what she was talking about. She did it all the time. She was either a Doors fan or she liked flirting with 7yr olds.

The Doors had some delightfully quirky lyrics, for sure! One of my favorite verses of any song comes from "Hello, I Love You", it's just so odd, but sweet: "Sidewalk crouches at her feet Like a dog that begs for something sweet Do you hope to make her see, you fool? *Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?"* (whaaa iza "Dusky jewel??"😆💎)
