ICONIC Big Block Chevelle with Family HISTORY

"I'll BURN it and MAKE YOU WATCH" is the kind of statement that never gets out of your head. For young Terry Davis, he filed away his dad's statement as more than an idle threat. When his dad spoke, it was time to listen, and if you watch this video, you might pick up on something else that Terry's dad said that really made an impact on his life, as well as the future of this cherished 1966 Chevelle SS 396. This car was promised to Terry when he was only 10 years old, but there were some stern stipulations involved. Follow along with the story of this iconic big block Chevelle, and see how it has been in the Davis family for more than 40 years.
The car recently received a very deserving restoration, with all original or NOS components. The matching numbers L35 big block is detailed to perfection, and you'll see that the Tuxedo Black paint is absolutely flawless. This car has a great story, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to tell it here. What a treasure, and what a great piece of the Davis family.

Thank you Tommy! You’ve captured my life story in print, and now video for the world to see. Also, thanks to everyone for the kind comments, I’ve read and appreciate them all. This car did shape my childhood, in fact my whole life.

This story hits me to my core, as Terry knows, I've been doing a similar journey with my dad's 66 SS396, and Terry has been providing the critical points to get me through some of the 'sticking points' of an epic restoration. It's great to see history like this being preserved!

I can relate to this story. In the fall of 1980, my parents bought a new Carousel Red turbo Trans Am. Sure, it's not a big block (Pontiac never made a big block V8 anyway), but no one would argue that the Trans Am isn't an icon of its era. My family had seen Smokey and the Bandit in 1977 at the theater, and my mother commented how she liked "that car with the bird on the hood". So my father quipped, "Let's buy one then". 1977 turned to 1978, to 1979, and then my family was ready to buy one. But the second gas crisis put a hold on that. The car we would have ordered was a 1979 Black SE Trans Am, Y84, 400/4 speed with a hobnail interior. One of 1,107 with the 400, probably one of about 300 with the 400 and the hobnail interior. We then tried to buy a Pace Car in 1980, but my mom drove down the block at the dealer with the parking brake on. The dealer said, "I don't have any new ones, just that one. The only other Trans Am I have that's new is that red one your kids (my sister and I) are sitting in". My mom said, "That's not red, it's orange". My father said, "We'll take it, we'll never miss it in the parking lot". For those that don't know, Carousel Red is the iconic color on the 1969 GTO Judge. It was a wedding present from my dad to my mom for their 15th wedding anniversary in 1980--that and a bouquet of roses. We then bought the car. My father passed in 1988, but said to me in 1980, "When you turn 17, we'll give you the car". My sister went to use it one day to go out with her friends and my dad said, "Where are you going?" My sister said, "For a ride with my friends in the T/A, but it's being washed". My father said, "That's right. When you wash it like your brother does, you can take it out for a ride", and he laughed. I don't think my sister drove it after that. Fast forward to 1988, my father passes and it's between his 1983 Coupe DeVille and the T/A to go up for sale. My neighbor who was a mechanic said, "Ah, get rid of the T/A, it's older". I almost did, but said, "Nah, let's get rid of the Cadillac, it's got the HT4100 engine, that's going to be trouble when it gets old". Mind you, my father did all of his own work and took good care of both cars and I also do my own work too. The Cadillac went, got sold to my neighbor's boyfriend and was wrecked three months later. I would see it when he came to visit my neighbor's daughter and it was getting ratty---a missing hubcap, a dent here and there, wasn't in clean shape. I think my father sent down a lightning bolt on that one. LOL. Fast forward again to 2014, I decide to try to find the sales manager that sold us the car. My father still had paperwork for the car in his files and I got more from Pontiac Historical Services and bought NOS literature online over the years, etc. I find a hit on a guy in south NJ selling cars. I e-mail him. Yup, he's the guy and he says to call him. I do and we have a conversation. He says, "I remember that car and your family, and I'll tell you how. Back in 1980, Candies shoes were popular with the girls and your sister wore them, and my wife had bought them for our daughter. I remember making that comment". This was true, and only he and I would know that. The guy had a memory like a steel trap and he just recently retired from selling cars. Like this story, my license plates are a good one. The plates on the car when we bought it new were transferred to it, but was issued to my father in NYS in 1973. When NYS changed plates in 1986, we kept the old ones in the garage. When it became legal to use them again as a Vintage Historic, we did so. When my mother passed a few years ago, I had to transfer the car from her to me. I was worried about losing the plate number. I called Albany, NY to the DMV office and the guy laughed. "Sure that's an easy one. Have the executor of the estate (my uncle) sign over the title and the plates to you and we'll just issue the documents in your name. Happens all the the time". So, those plates have been in my family for nearly fifty years, first to my dad, then my mom after he passed and now me. Over the years, I've been asked, "Is it for sale? Everything has a price..." My response has always been the same, "You can pry the keys from my cold hands when I'm long gone from this world". That's a great story and I can surely relate to it. While my parents are both passed away, the car and its legacy live on with me. As a side note, I did wind up with a 400/4 speed Trans Am, a 1979 10th Anniversary, one of 1,817 with the 400 and 4 speed which I bought in 1999 after I finished graduate school. I had a goal to finish and get an MBA before I was 30, and I finished at 28, so I treated myself to the car.

Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago. He and his brother Doug were pioneers in the drag racing scene here in the Chattanooga area. If I can round up enough photos and information, I'd love to do a video about those two guys.

It had the 325 horse version but in the 70s my dad put 3 deuces on the 396. Said that it would get up to 120mph no problem he traded it for a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 after the Chevelle started leaking water around the back glass. He always said out of all the old cars he the Chevelle is the one that he regrets the most for selling it.

My story was almost the exact OPPOSITE. My dad had a '57 Bel air hardtop. Candy apple red white top. 327 bored, cammed 4spd...he told everyone that was his son's car. It was scary as hell as a passenger. Even worse when your 8 yrs old...Well a few years later, my parents divorced and my father who told everyone, that car belonged to his son...sold it.He told me he had no choice and needed the money...I'm 46 now and I still can't forget what he did to me as I know how beautiful that car was. To me, it will always be a car that no other can come close to...guess that's life when reality for some smacks you right in the face

people who dismiss ice-powered cars as something of the past and electric is the way to go, etc.... underestimate the value of cars like this. electric appliances on wheels will never stir the soul like this chevelle.

It's great he did it for his dad but life isn't just about making money, I'm sure he never thought his dad was going to pass that way, but when you start a project always make it priority, I don't know the circumstances on anything but if we could turn time back.
