Before G-Land, it was Grajagan, named after a remote village
on the far east tip of Java. The jungle there is a place of
great superstitions. A no man’s land of black magic, spirits,
snakes and tigers. Some believe that this is the place where
earth first rose from the ocean. In the early seventies the first
wave of surfers began traveling to Bali. From plane windows
they saw perfect white lines sweeping into Grajagan bay,
but it took a young surfer from Southern California to get
there. Trekking alone on motorcycle, ferry and foot, Bob
Laverty eventually emerged from the jungle onto the beach
and was greeted by perfect waves. The fire was lit.
