Amazing collection but you have lost me with the claim that the ferns are being hybridised. Are ferns not asexual reproducers? If there is no cross pollination I cannot understand how one could possibly cross fertilise.

With a pretty quick search you will find that both platycerium, as well as other fern varieties hybridize in both nature and cultivation…

You can mix spores

I think it takes 2 viable spores to cross in order for them to getminate. It does with mushrooms so I guess its similar with other sporaphytes. Im sure a 3rd generation fernophile wouldnt be bandying the term about if it wasn't accurate.

Ferns can reproduce both asexually and sexually but it's a different process to flowering plants - it's complex but fascinating! Instead of pollen and seeds, they have spores which are dispersed from the parent plants. If they get mixed together with spores of a different species, they can produce hybrid plants. The hybrids usually lose the ability to sexually reproduce. Ferns often rely on asexual propagation when conditions aren't quite right - they need enough moisture for the spores to do their thing. ru-vid.com2fKRDkxm1DY
