Come along on a slippery rock hunt on a frozen beach. I didn't bring many rocks home, but the ice formations on the beach were beautiful.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I’ll have to remember LL Bean! We’ve moved to Vancouver Island which is a coastal rain forest. My water repellent coat isn’t cutting it, and running shoes are always wet! I’ve lost track of how many days in a row it has rained, but, if the mists clear, you can just see snow on the mountaintops. The dark stone with red in it looked like jasper running through basalt. I have small stones like that. I have basalt with epidote in it. I call it unakite but I know thats incorrect. You know, when I see you shoveling snow to find a pudding stone I'll know you're dedicated...or just a little crazy. If you are a little crazy you might like winter kayaking. The Mason Tract on the south branch af the Au Sable River is clear of ice all year. Did it in January and February. 14 degrees was the high one of those days. Water is clear and shallow for viewing stones and other winter wonders. Once again you did another fine job. I could almost smell the crisp, clean Alpena air.

I think I'll pass on winter kayaking. Last spring I went out in very cold water wearing waders. I wasn't sure I'd be able to fit in the kayak with them on, but somehow I managed. I planned to walk in the water for rocks after crossing some open water in the kayak.

This was my first hunt in that fourth season. I do like to hunt very early in the spring though. I was out in the water at Petoskey twice with ice. Once, the water had a thin sheet of ice when I arrived early in the morning. Another time, I waded out to where the thick ice hadn't melted yet. I was wearing waders both times, so it wasn't too cold.

If you ever make it to Ontario there is a peninsula that separates Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Glaciers carved out this land, Bruce peninsula and it’s full of cool rocks and fossils. You will find lots of treasure (s) I’ve even found parts of a shipwreck. I just saw the actual ship lifted out of the water in the newspaper and it had artifacts still on the ship. I found an actual Claw foot- part of a cast iron claw foot tub last summer from a ship🤗

There is a location I go to that's pretty cool and I have found some cool rocks and glass. The name of the place is... ROCKPORT, New Brunswick Canada. It's a longer drive to get there so I don't go there more than a couple times a year. Another beach I walk is a point that from above looks just like a dragon's head but 5 miles around. It has a beach facing the west and another facing the south. The beach on the west gets filled up with a 3-4 foot thick blanket of icy slush that makes it impossible to walk. The other beach never has any of that and they are only a couple of hundred feet apart. I tried to walk on it to take a short cut but it took me so long as I kept going through the surface up past my knees. I gave up rather quickly.

Doesn’t hurt to ask, right? My favorite spot is surrounded by private property. I don’t want to make the people who give me permission to use their land angry by advertising where it is. A couple weeks ago I did ok at Harrisville State Park. I found Petoskey stones and puddingstones, but they were mostly pretty small. Sturgeon Point lighthouse was the same. Rockport is great for fossils, but not for good quality Petoskey stones. Huge Petoskeys are in the quarry, but they’re not good for polishing in my experience.

We love it all, and for the love of FATHERS Creation in the beauty of Rocks... So questions do you have a place to share with us and others where to buy Rock Tumblers as in larger than 3lb sizes as well as a brand of the grit. Thank you for any suggestions, we love watching ALL your videos... Keep going even if the age brings a cane lol

I buy almost all of my tumblers and tumbling supplies from The Rock Shed. I have a large homemade tumbler now, but before that I used Lortone tumblers and I still use Lortone barrels on my big tumbler. The QT66 or QT12 is the larger one I have. The QT66 has two six pound barrels, and the QT12 is the same base, but with one big 12 pound barrel. There's a shortage of tumblers right now, so you might have to wait to get one. I also buy almost all my grit from The Rock Shed. I do buy my coarse (46/70) grit from Kingsley North in 45 lb. packages because it's cheaper, but The Rock Shed now has large packages at prices pretty close. You get a discount on grit and rough rocks when you buy a tumbler from the Rock Shed, so it's a good time to stock up. rockshed.com kingsleynorth.com

We used to have an airboat that we could go on water or ice or both. In winter the ice would freeze around a stem and make a disc. Then it would thaw from the stem and make a ring that would hang on the stem. On the water you could go a certain speed but on the ice there was less resistance so you could go lots faster... and no brakes.😳 Airboats are noisy but fun.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 года назад
That sounds like a lot of fun. I didn't know those could go on ice. Does the ice need to be free of snow?
@kaybree6738
@kaybree6738 4 года назад
Michigan Rocks you can but snow increases the drag and makes turning more difficult. It was cool to go on and off the ice and some ice would flex and not break. We did most of the St Joseph river over the years. Could go in water too shallow for canoes, rock up on and over logs. Stuck on a mud bar? The other one would make a wake while you revved it.

@@MichiganRocks When I pick up a rock that is nice but I already have a bunch of those I don't just drop it. I will toss the rock towards the bank for other people to find. The tide can haul those rocks back out to the Bay or the tide can be in and then those rocks are hidden. The tides will bring in huge car/truck side blocks of ice and will float them out onto the marshes. When the tide goes back out again there will be dozens of these huge blocks of ice and the next day they can all be gone again. Very cool, powerful and just a bit scary.

My three year old granddaughter bought me a bag of rocks for Christmas. She loves walking the beaches with me and brings me all kinds of rocks. Her little sister, only a year old, will come in my office and steal rocks... I only leave big rocks out for her so she can't put them in her mouth... even though she tries. Looking forward to next summer when both of them can go out with me and do some rock picking.

Should have snagged a little of that fresh dirt from the erosion and checked for some flour gold!
@MichiganRocks

I think that's mostly limestone. The only gold here would be deposited by glaciers. In the U.P., there is sometimes black sand about five inches deep. It almost always has flour gold in it. I don't think this stuff would have any.

I drive an hour one way to pick up rocks along our Bay of Fundy coastline in New Brunswick Canada. I love it and do it all year long. Right now it's winter and cold. The beach starts to freeze up after the tide goes out and about two hours later it's like concrete. So I have to get a bigger rock to knock them loose from the sand. However if I arrive as the tide is going out they aren't frozen in at all and easy to pick up. What's really cool is the in coming tide brings in lots more rocks with it. Most of the time I come home with 10-20 pounds of stones for my tumblers. Yesterday the beach was frozen solid so I only got about 5 pounds. Every rock I pick up means I have to bend or squat down and with each rock my back pack gets a little heavier so I get really good exercise for my back and legs. I've had days when I thought I would have to take out some rocks but always made it back to my car. HaHa Love rock hounding which all started after a heart attack that left me with heart damage... so picking rocks kind of saved my life.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 года назад
I never through about the tide thawing things out and then letting them freeze. We don't have noticeable tides on the Great Lakes, so we rely on wave action and ice to move our rocks around. The waves do a very good job.

@MichiganRocks

Please don't dump in into any sort of drain. I'm not sure what you mean by "open alley drain", but it sounds like what I would call a storm drain. I'm thinking of grates on a tree that let rain water flow away. You'd eventually fill that up and clog it if you dumped enough in. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to dispose of anything in those. Here's what I do with mine, including winter disposal: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j-356YqFox8.html
