On this episode of ID That Tree, Purdue Extension forester Lenny Farlee introduces you to a non-native invasive tree that is widespread across the state, white mulberry. Key identifying characteristics to separate it from its native cousin red mulberry are shiny variable leaves and where the species grows, near fencerows, hedgerows and other waste areas. The red mulberry has larger leaves that are duller in color with a sandpapery texture, and the species is often found in the forest understory.

Thank you very much for this video! Easy to follow and identify the characteristics of this particular tree! Thanks!

Thanks so much for the clear visuals and concise description! I was able to identify these in my backyard after uncovering them in a thicket of trees. Hoping the birds are willing to share in the bounty!

I have one of these in my backyard and for a decade had no idea it was edible. last year I tried one and it was delicious. I was shocked by this. I eat a handful every time I go outside in the summer.

Where is the white mulberry native to? We have a white one growing in our yard and it’s growing like a weed and taking over the surrounding trees. I haven’t seen it produce any fruit yet. I am in western Massachusetts btw.

Birds love them so get rid of them. Makes sense.

So, should I cut my white one down and replace it with a red one?
@purduefnrextension
@purduefnrextension Год назад
We recommend the replacement of invasive species with native species. You may want to check and see if you can find a source for native red mulberry. The Indiana Native Plant Society maintains some lists of native nursery and plant sources on their website indiananativeplants.org/landscaping/where-to-buy/ Ultimately, it is a personal choice - you are not required to do so if you decide against removal.

How do we remove the White Mulberry trees and prevent them from regrowing? Our property is being overran by them and they are popping up everywhere all over our yard thanks to the bird droppings lol. We are located in Central IN. Any recommendations on an invasive tree removal service?

Cutting and treating the stump with herbicide is very effective. Here is a blog post covering the treatment details: www.purdue.edu/fnr/extension/question-best-treatment-unwanted-trees-woodlands/ There is a list of invasive plant control contractors at www.sicim.info/contractors/

@@purduefnrextension Thank you so much! Once this heat spell breaks, we will tackle the ones that are 6” in diameter & less using the basal oil stump treatment, and and ask the contractors to come help us remove the 3 very large ones. They have intertwined themselves in some fencing at the edge of our property and going to need more manpower than I have available lol 😅 I appreciate you responding & helping me! We are trying to get our property certified as a native wildlife habitat growing only native species of plants & ensuring the birds, pollinators, and local wildlife have sanctuary. This is the first step-getting rid of these *invasive* mulberry trees that are overtaking our home! LOL.

@@JudicialMermaidi would urge you to consider grafting over them with known fruiting cultivars. If you have domesticated animal, particularly ruminants or some monogastrics, the leaves are a great source of high protein and mineral fodder.

So, how can you distinguish red mulberry from black mulberry, or red crosses?
@purduefnrextension
@purduefnrextension Год назад
We are not aware of black mulberry being in this area, but one feature said to differentiate it from other mulberries is the “uniformly hairy lower surface of its leaves.” Crosses/hybrids can have characteristics of both parents, so ID could become very difficult and is beyond the scope of work that Lenny does. Specialists and genetic testing may be needed to confirm identity.
@PerennialGrowth

Usually the coloration on the buds will give it away, rubras or hybrids with rubra genes exhibit red buds when they are in the dormant stage.

Do you consider these invasive because they're not native?
@purduefnrextension
@purduefnrextension Год назад
Yes. They are not native and also easily spread, grows aggressively and competes with native species.
@EpicWarTurtle

They've been naturalized. The invasive title is outdated
@FireRupee
@FireRupee Год назад
@@EpicWarTurtle They seem to outcompete the native red mulberry, and cross readily with them, to the point of the red mulberry being listed as endangered in some states. You sure that label is outdated?

@@FireRupee They seem ? Who says ? Any studies proving they spread faster than if you planted a red one in your yard ?

@@joanfrellburg4901 Yes, they have been studied. I am not an author of such a study.

I have 2 in my yard and one is male. The fruit on the female is white and doesn't really taste good, it's bland. I am going to destroy them. I purchased 10 diff mulberries fr nurseries.
