This jingle is burned into the core of my brain and has been for decades. I recall very little from the 70's, but this song has never left me. I swear its physically imprinted on my brain.
OMG... Creature Double Feature--- My sis and I watched "Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things" ... "Devil Dogs: Hounds of Hell" .. "Mako: Jaws of Death" and sooo much more. I still remember this jingle tho... and the fuscia sasson jeans I got there lol
Ben Krass had a bunch of them - I still remember the version that went "...you oughta be horsewhipped" with these women coming at him with whips and he feigned pain. Then that Channel 6 announcer closing with "Krass Brothers Mens Store, 901 South Street, Store of the Staaaaars."
I think that one existed too. Kung Fu Theater on 17 and Black Belt Theater on 29. Hell, didn't Channel 48 have a "Chop Socky" show back in the day too? I remember them having a special 3D showing of a Martial Arts movie during prime time (or maybe that was on 17 too.)
Always Loved these Commercials! Remember the first ones where the ladies drove there in Old Lincoln Town cars Late 1960's / early 1970's. Take the wheel of your Automobile and swing on down to Ideal!
I had no idea how far away "the White Horse Pike in Hammonton New Jersey" was from home and how hokey the "Ideal Manufacturing Co." was until, finally, as an 18-year-old, I passed it on a different route to the shore. My family preferred the Black Horse Pike (a.k.a. Route 322). Having heard the jingle a million times by then, I should have listened more closely - it truly was "nothing but a quonset hut..."
Growing up in Princeton, NJ in the '70's I must have heard this jingle a million times. This version is missing the beginning though where she says "It's not a fancy salon, it's nothing but a Quonset Hut". I watched a lot of Philly TV including the funny little UHF stations 17, 29 & 48.
My youth had many of the same touchstones. Maybe that line about the Quonset was a radio exclusive (?). In the very early days of UHF my younger brothers watched a show called, Dickery Dock. Maybe channel 29 or 48. Channel 17 was Wee Willie Webber and 8th Man. Saturday night, either 29 or 48 (or both) had the C-grade horror movies with Dr. Shock(?). Even at that, my mother would scan what listings there were to keep her brood of five sons entertained. My mother found Carnival of Souls (1962) one Saturday night in the mid-'60s for us. That one is now a horror classic.
@@scotthouston3607 I'd guess that there were multiple versions of the Ideal Manufacturing Co. commercials over the years. It's a bit of a shame that all versions weren't preserved or perhaps they are just waiting to be discovered. My contemporaneous memories of that era and these commercials are that there was a sly sophistication to them. They said, 'You too can have that jet-set look without spending all of your cash.' I wish that my wife were still alive so I could bounce my memories off of her recollections.

It has no moving video, but shows a still drawing of one of a store, and the commercial starts with a very pleasant voice saying, “It’s not a fancy salon. It’s nothing but a Quonset Hut.” In 2022, it’s funny to read the info that was printed on the ad’s pic. Plenty of parking spaces, buses stop at door, use our layaway plan - no extra charge, and the store was called a Salesroom. Sounds so fancy. I love all of it!
@@TralfazConstructionYes, Yes, Yes, about " Carnival of Souls". I, too, first saw that on, I believe, Channel 48, back in the mid- late 60's. It scared the heck out of me as a 10 year old and still gives me those same vibes today. I also first saw the youth-oriented western, "Journey to Shiloh" back in the late 60's on that same station. It was one of the first films that a young James Caan had done and also included a young, unknown actor named Harrison Ford. Jan Michael Vincent, Paul Petersen (The Donna Reed Show) and Michael Sarrazin were some of the other young cowboys. Boy! Did pre-teen "me" have a crush on them! The movie is still one of my " guilty pleasures". I miss the days when you could turn on as many TV's in the house and didn't pay a cent ...and those 3 little obscure channels that provided some quality entertainment for us kids, pre-teens and teens...
There was another one shot by the impala fountain at the Philadelphia Zoo. When they said 'Take the Wheel...' they showed someones hand spinning what must have been a Delta or Delmont 88 steering wheel.
As a boy, I begged my mother to take me to Ideal because I loved the jingle so much, but she would just laugh at me----little did I know that it was a women's store!
I have had this jingle in my freakin head for 40 years!!!! And I still can't figure out how my mom ever found the place.. she is SO directionally challenged
I live in Delaware but this was on my tv and I grew up to this great jingle, and I've wanted to do jingles ever since! This commercial came on years after it was made though, way into the 80's, on Wphl-17. I read that if I was watching that channel between 12am-5am eastern time, chances are that commercial came on, had no idea I was up that late or that early. Thanks for bringing me back:)
In the 1970s and early 80s, I saw the Ideal commercials on WPHL 17 and WKBS 48 in the daytime. The late 70s ads showed models in early 70s psychedelia and that white Lincoln Continental Mark IV driving up to the Quonsset Hut. And the ads ran almost 1 minute.

I shopped at Ideal in the 1990s-2000s before they closed. The Ideal in Glassboro is still in business, but they sell fancy dresses. I always sang the famous jingle while driving up to the Quonset hut.
"17 The Great Entertainer"; when I saw that, reality wavered a little bit. It was, for a moment, like seeing something out on the horizon being distorted by shimmering waves of rising heat. It has to be the better part of three decades since I was accustomed to seeing that particular logo. Back in its day, I'd see that a few dozen times in a week. I haven't even gotten to the Ideal commercial yet but this is so nostalgic that it squeezes my heart like a sponge and then I think about how much has changed and my dear, departed loved ones.
Well, that makes me sad in a way I can't fully grasp nor describe. I believe it has to do with those familiar institutions of my youth going by the wayside. When those Ideal commercials were common on TV and radio I was closer to the beginning of my life than the end. I like familiar things, they're comforting.
See this commercial on your old wooden console TV set while watching cartoons and then head out with your mom to the Deptford Mall where you hang out in the video game arcade, or maybe hop in your friend's dad's Country Squire station wagon, sitting in the rear-facing seat with the tailgate window open as you head over to the Vet for a Phillies game in the 700 level.
I thought it was Atlantic City track, since they're also on the boards that day. So I just figured they'd head over here, because its closer. Resorts International, the 1st & earliest casino, didn't open till 1978. In the clip the 2 ladies eating hot-dogs, are standing in front of construction boards nailed to a building on the boardwalk. That means at would have at least been '76 or later. (Those clothes don't look like 1975...but I'm no big a fashion expert. The 2nd casino, Caesar's opened in '79. If the ad was later, that could have been construction for a different casino. Making it the 80's The racetrack's open space & trees in the background suggested it was A.C Race Track. There were/are also trees in Cherry Hill. But the "feel" isn't the same. Also remember Garden State's bleachers and its Club House burned down in 1977, and people were killed. It didn't reopen till 1985. So it'd have been made prior to 1976/77. They did have training there yes. But none of the bleacher or on-the-rail kind activity as shown in the short ad clip. Philly played these ads too. So did we down here in South Jersey. Ideal sold clothes everywhere. If that track's Garden State though...that's cool. I'm just mentioning my observation of the tape. Not knowing any more about it than what my old eyeballs are telling me. And hey, I don't see very good anymore.

I last saw the old Ideal wheel-spin commercial on TV on a Sunday morning in July ‘92 on NBC 3. Shocked to see a 20 yo commercial, but also shocked to NOT see that gem on YT!
I grew up with that commercial playing 10 times a day when I was a kid. LOL The sad part is they never updated it. They still played the same commercial with the same outdated clothing into the mid 80s before finally going out of business.
That's an oldie but goodie...for nostalgia purposes. For downright stick in your head and "won't fall out" purposes...oh man! So it did work. I can't tell you how many times that old ad went through my head. when. That radio was always on at work of course.

I remember the song never remember them standing by a water fountain wearing bell bottoms in the early 80s I thought that was weird cuz nobody was wearing bell bottoms in the 80s✌😎💨

This commercial was made in the 60's, (possibly the 70's), but definitely was NOT the 80's. Harry S. Goodman produced the IDeal jingle single in 1960. If you're in doubt, just watch the video and look at the clothing and hair styles.
Brigantine Castle info: Constructed in 1976, it drew millions of visitors annually until it was damaged in 1982 in a storm. Facing declining attendance and a $500,000 repair bill, it was closed in 1984. Carmen Ricci, the owner, sold it in 1987 for $1 million, and it burned to the ground later that year just as demolition was slated to begin.
