🙏Thanks for all your splendid discussions which I've been following for months even though I live in the UK and I'm not part of the industry; safety is never enough

Thanks for all your ideas. And how supportive you all have been to us. Just wish to share my experience. In projects I've worked what is done is. For panels, identification is done based on the type and the floor at which it is installed. Example DB-GF-LP-01 where DB is distribution board, GF installed in ground floor, LP feeding lighting and power circuits, 01 is the 1st DB. The cables on the panel will identify the source, example Incoming cable will identify where it's feeding from while outgoing cables will identify the feeder circuits. Same way for wiring devices also are identified with the circuit reference and the panel it's feeding from. Example DB-GF-R5 on socket outlet. R5 will identify the circuit reference. Once more thanks for the knowledge

for home run circuits on drawings this panel name is way to long.

Where I work all of the outlets, disconnects and panels are labeled as to the panel the power comes from but there is no description where the panel is located. Drives me crazy sometimes trying to find the panel.

I can see room for confusion with identifying the location. Often times in multilevel, mixed use construction, the organization of the floors/rooms are different under construction drawings vs. the floor labels when the building is occupied by civilians. The code should enforce location specific labeling, but the culture of construction is behind the times in developing professionals who care about that level of detail especially when labels change as the building phases progress.

I retired from a large hospital that probably had over 35 ATS switches located in two separate basements and five other floors and would have been great if each ATS was marked not only with the panel & breaker location but exact floor & room #. We had a chesp contractor install 7' high 84 circuit panels with the smallest engraved maybe 1.5" long plastic sign for panel & breaker that feed it. Only problem they installed the 20 plus signs at top of panel that even wearing glasses I could never read them so had to hunt fown s stepladder to read them. Finally started marking panel legend with info. A year or two later they finally throw this electricsl contractor out of the building.

I love this rule - in my house, I label each panel so a receptacle would say Panel 3-13 in basement. Panel 3 also says, disconnect located in panel 1 Breaker 3/4 in garage. Oh my goodness, imagine homeowners not being confused.

circuit must be labelled specifically detailed

True. In a 4 bed 4 bath house for example labels such as "bedroom " or "John Doe's room" isn't sufficient.

The reason this doesn't apply to dwelling units, is that generally a dwelling unit has a single panel, and the resident knows where it is.

The electrical industry suffers greatly from a lack of standardization. From equipment to simple listings, the NEC is inflated without equilivant value added. If this book was a spreadsheet, the =if function would be the only portioned memorized 😆 🤣 😂

Mike please stop. About the time boomers figure this out they'll be gone and it will matter even less. My house will have multiple sources of power. Battery, Solar, Wind, Backup petrol Gen, and potentially grid. There is no (cost effective way) to make a single big switch to turn it all off. Also my brother is a firefighter. You know what they're not going in until the power company shows up was his response to the required disconnect. So stop thinking it's for the firefighters.

@steven7650 We were at the Code Making Panel meetings where this was discussed and added to the NEC. It was 100% done for the firefighters and was represented by firefighters (Many Code Panel Members are Firefighters) during discussion for approval. There are also rules in the NEC addressing interconnected power production systems shutdown. This is standard practice in todays world.
