We looked at 4 old anvils in this video and used Anvils in America to help identify them and find out about their history.
Hay Budden serial #185633 - manufactured 1911 - 260 # - In the video I said that I'd been told this was a wheelwrights anvil. I believe it's actually a "Farriers Swelled Plain Horn Anvil" based on this catalogue from Hay Budden - www.bamsite.org...

Great description on the Hay Budden. That's perfectly logical deduction about a wheelwrights anvil, makes a lot of sense. Interesting how it has 2 pritchel holes. Sure is a pretty anvil, good for you preserving it out on the farm. Nice going!

Is it possibly an old Sanderson brothers anvil? Found Sanderson brothers iron works based out of Sheffield around the 1880s

I think that's correct. It's a cool old anvil. It's a shame it's in such rough shape.

I think it's Sanderson brothers, attercliffe , Sheffield. Steve Nottingham England.

It says Saunders brothers iron works. Lee Gibbs, blacksmith in Scotts, Michigan

The hay budden is a farriers anvil with the clip horn ground/broke off. The dead giveaway is the super narrow face and two pritchel holes, both were late modifications for the farrier model. The earlier farrier had one pritchel and they added a second. I have a 136 lb one with the clip horn half in tact. They break off.

I've never found a cheap source for it. Maybe one will pop up on a used book site or ebay if you're lucky.

The video actually makes it easier to read than it was in person. One trick on hard to read inscription on anvils, tombstonesx, etc, is to look at it through a camera. I was also a little thrown off that the anvil wasn't mentioned in Anvils in America at all.

i think you need new glasses, its a sanderson brothers from shefield england, made of cast iron, ben beat all 2 hell, aint worth much... and i dont know anything about anvils...

It’s a wrought anvil, definitely not cast iron, Sanderson Bros Sheffield .. Later became Hadfield Sanderson

The close up photo I could definitely see Sanderson brothers, maybe they were a retailer! I have an old anvil which shares may of the same characteristics , there are some very damaged markings on one side but not enough to even guess what it may be. I will look at again now I have seen yours!

Well sir, that anvil clearly says Sanderson Brothers on it. I don't know anything about that company but it definitely states Sanderson Brothers on it.

I could tell it was a Hay Budden in the first second, that shape is iconic among other anvils.

The more anvils you see the easier it gets no doubt about that. Learning which features are unique really helps.

I wouldn't call the Hay Budden a wheelwright anvil. A wheelwright wouldn't use an anvil in any special way to warrant an inclusive anvil. I believe it's a farrier style anvil.

Sanderson Brothers is correct. I don't think they were ever sold in large numbers in the US. At least they didn't show up in Anvils in America.

I found a anvil at a local scrap yard that someone made out of a 5 inch thick piece of steel! Don't have anymore, dang it. Same shape as a regular anvil.

I have a huge very old antique anvil I can’t identify. It’s 32” long and has a big horn on it. I’ve never had it weighed,but it easily goes 250-300lbs. It was shop anvil that belonged to my great great grandfather who used to shoe horses in Cleveland,Ohio

Oh also. If you just lightly wipe alittle diesel over the letting. It may help bring out more of the name.

Hey there Robert. Like you I am starting to get the blacksmith bug so I started to collect up on some needed items to get started. If you look on RU-vid here and click up rail road rail anvils then you can see how you can make an anvil from a piece of railroad track. That's what I did. I purchased an 18" long section of track for like $35.00 on Ebay and made an anvil of my own. My wood base that I made up actually cost more than my anvil project but you can build an anvil fairly cheaply if you can pick up a section of rail or if you have a scrap yard near you then maybe you can get a big ole chunk of steel there and it won't break your bank account. Hope this helps.
