Identifying edible yams (Dioscorea alata) isn't hard: the main non-edible one growing in Florida is Dioscorea bulbifera, the hated "air potato" vine. Both species are named as invasive species; however, the winged yam (D. Alata) is a very good edible and isn't nearly as invasive as D. bulbifera. Here's how to identify edible air potatoes - and I show you a patch of really good looking ones growing wild in an undeveloped lot. Foraging for wild food is fun - especially when they taste as great as yams do. These are also a great survival crop. Preparedness!

The round ones are Dioscorea bulbifera, and they CAN be eaten. They can be bitter if not prepared correctly, but they ARE EDIBLE. Idk why so many people say they aren’t, but they are. They’re invasive for sure (suffocated two VERY OLD oaks in my back yard).

Thanks David. I've been growing these off and on in the Venezuelan Andes and didn't know there were poisonous varieties. @@chargermopar On your property? Do you know if they can be propagated from cuttings? I've begun to notice something that may be what I'm looking for, but I still can't be sure until I see the bulbs up in the air for sure. From what I can see there are over half a dozen varieties that look quite similar, but aren't really easy to eat. I have four growing in my yard now, and the leaves look just like a few I see on the local trails except the leaves I see on the trails are significantly wider and darker. I think my next step will be to dig a few of them up, and see what they look like. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the air potatoes though. That seems like one of the best tell tale signs for diascoria allata

@@shnarklevonbarkle110 Mine have opposite leaves on the vine while air potatoes have staggered leaves. I picked this plant out of an empty lot as a kid in the 1970's. They do not grow from cuttings but the bulbils and tubers can be cut up and planted.

@davidthegood

You can plant the "berries," which are actually aerial roots, or you can cut up and plant the below-ground root. The seeds often sold online may or may not be viable - I have not tried propagating via seeds.

+trey2099 LOL I have heard around 100lbs. Never found one that big, though. And yes - I think the beetles were a bad idea. For now, though, they are knocking back the D. bulbifera and allowing the D. alata to take hold in places where it was getting run over by air potatoes previously.
