Identifying the Shaggy Parasol and The Slender Parasol 

I'm eating all of them from years.... And love it!

I foolishly ate one of these yesterday at the dog-park yesterday. It appeared to be a normal Parasol mushroom so I thought it would've been edible. There were no scales on the top, no nipple in the middle, and the gills were a fleshy/pink color as opposed to the usual green-color you get on false-parasol. With those factors in mind, I assumed it would've been safe to eat a few small bites and be fine even if I was incorrect about its identification. Within 1.5hrs, I felt dizzy like I needed to lay down. Then, I felt terrible nausea beginning to onset. After still feeling dizzy and nauseous for 20 minutes, I figured it was time to go home but as I was exiting the park - I felt my stomach violently churn. I bent over and vomited. I went to sit back down to recover then about 10 minutes later when I felt I was goodi to drive, I again felt my stomach churn when I stood up and I threw up. When I drove home, I had to pull over and vomit once more and once I pulled up in front of my house, I immediately opened my door and vomited again. I went straight to the bathroom sat there with my head over the toilet vomiting almost continuously throughout the 4 hours. I had taken most of my clothes off and I was sweating out of every single pore of my body as if I were in a sauna. When I looked in the mirror, my usually tan skin color had turned to a pale yellow color and I had goosebumps all over my body. Eventually I managed to dizzly make my way to my bedroom where I had a bucket that I vomited in more. Whenever I tried to close my eyes to sleep, I had these strange, fever-like thoughts that were moving at what felt like 1000mph like I was having a bad trip. After throwing up a few more times, I guess I eventually expelled most of the poison out of my body because I was waking up the next morning before I knew it. I feel much better today, my limbs feel a little week and my stomach feels like I've been doing ab-workouts. Don't try to eat wild mushrooms unless you are advanced enough to identify them with great certainty. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. It felt like I was never going to stop throwing up.

Here in Monterey, California. I noticed of the five different Monterey cypress trees that I find my Agaricus Lilaceps at I always find Lilaceps on the eastern facing half of the tree, and I find chlorophlum rhacoides on the western half of the trees. Very interesting. Thanks for getting in the detail.

(Hat of parasol) Flour, egg and bread crumbs than fry on pan.. Love picking mine in autumn from Malvern hills.. Or drying out in oven powering it.. Using in soup, stew, etc

Brilliant video. These smaller parasols look like they could be easy to confuse with the Dapperlings (like the freckled Dapperlings you recently highlighted).

Good advice I think mate,I have eaten Shaggy parasols for ages but I have this year had a reminder that you must never get complacent, always test a small portion first before whacking a load in your cooking it's nothing too serious but not a great day out.

Thanks again Marlow, I've been munching away on parasol mushrooms for a while now, you've just thrown some confusion into the mix, it was definitely shaggy parasol no reactions what so ever and I didn't hold back on them past 2 months, now I think they might have been the slender stem but I'm not so sure.

Post a certain medical intervention (global) my wife became allergic to Parasolls generally (acknowledge by the Dr at a main hospital who said people's immune system have been impacted). Other who are prick free didn't have a reaction...

Thanks! I thought I had found shaggies today but I think they are bruneums so leaving as they have smooth stems and bruise to dark brown when cut. Beautiful all the same

Great content. Is it possible you could do a vid on how to tell the difference between the ivory funnel, the trooping funnel, and common funnel? I've been picking some trooping funnels but just recently I picked what I thought was a trooping but the stem is hollowed. I 'think' they are common funnels but any tips on how to clearly identify the ivory funnel would be greatly appreciated considering how dangerous it is.

I've heard that alcohol can exacerbate the bad effects of the "shaggies". Any truth to this? (Great video, btw, as always.)

Can the gills turn a tan light Brown color as it matures to the flate dinner plate size? I found some & the gills were not cream. They had the movable skirt, not a cup or egg sac at the bottom of the stem. It had roots coming out of the stem. I'm so confused because it doesn't look like either of the parasol mushrooms and I'm pretty sure it is one of the two. It doesn't have the orange bruising that I can tell, and it doesn't have the greenish color gills either. I just want to use them dried out in crafts projects. I don't want to eat them but I would also like to know what it is. I really wish I could post a picture.

Would shaggy mushrooms have no snake skin what so ever? I picked my first parosoles this year was confident in all the ones I picked except one which was right next to the main patch which had a white stem but only the smallest patch of snake skin at the base. I had severe diarrhea 24 hours later

Are there any other mushrooms that have the ball and socket joint? I found a pure white mushroom with the skirt and ball and socket joint. No egg sac. Fairly tall though. In uk growing in moss under silver birch.
