LET'S REASON TOGETHER TOUR - LONDON
Africkswag has embarked on a UK City Tour which will consist of Vox Pops, asking questions about issues affecting young Africans within the community. By the end of this tour, we hope to have corrected some negative perceptions about Africa and Africans in general.
For London,we chose the topic of identity and wanted to find out whether young Africans see themselves as British or African.
Please Subscribe and leave your comments below on the issue.

I identify as Kenyan, East African. Although I was born and raised in London, (so I’m environmentally British but I’m culturally Kenyan) my parents brought me up with an African mentality. Also, regular visits to Kenya have helped to shape my thinking and allowed me to embrace my heritage.

This sounds realistic to me. I'm all for people born here identifying as African, I mean we are after all lol, but to say that it's just a passport thing when you live here, have a British accent and know more about life in England than life back in your home country is just begging it imo. @infinityfandom512

Uhh you do know race isn’t biological. And the notion that DNA determines race is laughable because it’s extremely small. In reality race is an extreme social phenomenon. That means the practices you do on a daily basis and how you act and speak is determined by we’re you grew up. Basically I’m saying you can’t really say you identify as African if you don’t actually live by the culture standards of certain part of Africa you claim to be apart. Because remember race is not biological and is just cultural.

The real test is whether Africans would see you as African or British. In fact there is your first difficulty there, is there even such a thing as an African identity? There are 54 African countries and there are big differences between the cultures of various African countries. Even in sub-Saharan African, many would identify with tribal identity, not there national identity. I would call myself European but I am English, so how much would I really have in common with someone from Italy or Belgium? The other big problem, is if you'er a 2nd or 3rd generation and you still don't identify with the country you are born in. There is little hope for racial integration. You don't have a nation, you have a bunch of separate communities living parallel lives. The real test for migration is for separate identities to melt away, it is what has always happened in the past.
@eharris6347
@eharris6347 2 года назад
💯 correct !!!!!
@tm1rt2vv8i
@tm1rt2vv8i 2 года назад
Superb. In regard to your second paragraph - Douglas Murray had described the ‘yo-yo effect’ (in his book The Strange Death of Europe), in which the first generation immigrants are grateful to be in the country and are respectful, but the second, third (and so on) generations hate the country and fail to integrate. This is evident in Pakistani communities, where they have been here for generations, but yet, have the Pakistani-English accent. What is culture? It is a broad question. It is the way we eat, dress, talk, our etiquette, music, a shared set of values, heritage, material traditions, and outlook on life that comes down to us through a shared history and understanding of our surroundings. In which case, these people are correct to not identify themselves as ‘British’.
@BladimirButin
@BladimirButin 4 месяца назад
Most countries are already like that where you have separate parallel communities so don't understand what you're on about. Also as a white European you have to ask yourself why people of color tend to have this mentality that they're not of the nation they were born and raised in, much of it has to do with not being fully accepted so good luck getting people to then identity with the nation.

As an African American, the urge to connect to who we are and have some pride; not identifying with any African country in particular, we tend to see Africa as one huge nation! As we disagree with one another's opinions, let's not forget regional and situational perspectives...and that we have at least one dominant unifying characteristic, our skin color.

@youtubeuserzzzz
@youtubeuserzzzz 2 года назад
Being from the US. I'd imagine that individuals in such situation would contact the government for which Passport they have. All interviewed have African Parents and I'm sure they qualify for an African Passport. However, I'm sure all interviewed don't actually hold 2 Passports. I'm US Black American. Many US Black Americans are traveling more. Some have acquired an African Passport, due to DNA results, NOT because of having African Parents, African Grandparents etc. I'm 100% sure that if Black Americans found themselves in trouble in a Country outside the US, they'll contact the US Embassy vs the Embassy for which African Passport they have. I guess where one spends the most time. Not such much of what Heritage/Culture one feels.

I don't get the hateful comments. I identify more with my Nigerian side as I was born and lived most of my life in Nigeria. For me to say I identify more with my British side is a big fat lie, even though my dad is English! As for those that were born and grew up in the UK but find themselves identifying more with their African side, it's not abnormal or disrespectful to the country their parents moved to and raised them in, as some have suggested. If they had white adoptive parents I'm pretty sure they would grow up to identify more with the culture and lifestyle of their white adoptive parents. You can't knock someone's life experiences and choices when you have no idea how they may have lived, or even want to understand how they may have lived. Imagine coming from a typical African home, and living like an African, coming on camera to say you identify more with your British side, lol. You will appear silly to all the people that know you better.Stay real!

MsDee Kay It may not be abnormal, but it is absolutely disrespectful to not identify with the country your parents moved to. I'm American, but my parents are from Mexico. To call myself Mexican after all that this country did for me and my family would be an absolute slap in the face to it and to its people.

I find it amazing how Black British people connect with their African Roots . You ask me or the average black American we don't know much about Africa . We would claim American so fast that its a damn shame . We're not taught these things and our Generations before us have been broken and disconnected from Africa since slavery .
@youtubeuserzzzz
@youtubeuserzzzz 2 года назад
That's because the majority of the Black British are 1st or 2nd Generation British. It doesn't go any further than that. US Black Americans (the majority) are over 400+years removed from Africa. Even through DNA tests, US Black Americans' ancestry is very mixed-up. Whereas Black British DNA is pretty much all from Africa. Unless the person has 1 White British Parent and 1 Black African Parent (that migrated from Africa). Even the DNA is very straightforward, in those cases. My Ancestors made sure the stories were passed down, as much as they could. However, there was a lot of mixing with Whites (forcefully). So our bloodline is definitely NOT "pure" like the Black British.

Damn you uneducated 😂 they are not really black British they are just Africans who came to Europe or born in Europe from African parents. It's not like they were forced to Europe in 1600s and somehow held onto their Africaness. No they are literally Africans not slave descendants like black Americans

your culture is what is in your home, your parents your traditions your main food your habits etc. black is not a culture just like white is not a culture. you are either african european asian or caribbean etc. people can be nigerian british, british jamaican, Moroccan, irish British, chinese british nigerian somali, polish albanian british etc people dont just drop their identity just because they move abroad or are born elsewhere. an african in india doesn't become indian overnight they may be an indian national but of african origin therefore they would be a afro indian. All parents raise their children in their own culture. your culture is your identity. if you don't have a culture then you are black or white.

It's so crazy how African English citizens are more in tune with their African heritage than African Americans , African English citizens know where their culture comes from vs African Americans we do not know where we specifically come from all we know is that we came from africa or a colored country .Europeans have tainted the African American blood line

The person actually made a good point about differences in cultural perspectives across Disaporans living in two different countries. Yes, it is generalized, however that does not take away from the verity of her reflection.

To be honest, African-Americans don't know where they are coming from, the longest they can trace back their ancestors is probably a plantation in the south US, you can't expect them to relate to Africa as much as Black British do, knowing that most of them still have relatives living in different African countries too. You cannot compare them.
