• Video 56 - IDIOMS & PH...
Although the narrator uses the term "idiom" throughout the video, a better description would be "Idiomatic Phrases" since the phrases we examine include all of the following: Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, Slang, and other expressions.
Learn idioms, slang, phrasal verbs and other expressions used in the English language. One or two new videos will be added each week.
Knowing these phrases will ABSOLUTELY increase your English fluency.

This video has been designed like a lesson plan. There is an introduction, an analysis of idioms and a summary at the end of each phrase. Many videos on RU-vid quickly review one idiomatic phrase after another. In this video, the review of idioms is paced more appropriately for ESL learners. If you are familiar with these videos, you don't need to review the introduction each time. You can use the "chapter" bar at the bottom of the video to skip over the "Introduction". Look for new videos to be added each week. There will be close to 1,000 idioms and phrasal verbs analyzed by the end of 2024. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Thanks a whole lot from Russian ESL students! Keep up the awesome work! We'd really appreciate it if you could you upload more videos presenting US idioms and slang expressions so that we could start communicating with native American speakers on an entirely different level. Also we'd like to see videos on your great channel featuring samples of job interviews, which is extremely critical for newly arrived immigrants as well as people coming to the US to work for a period of time stipulated in the contract. We are especially interested in customs and traditions a typical American citizen is trying to follow. Those of us who are planning to get into a romantic relationship with Americans would like to get a better idea about personality traits of an average man or woman born and raised in the US. You're the best! We love you! - American Language Center Moscow, Russia

Thanks sooooo much for your suggestions! Based on these ideas, we've put together a video related to job interviews. Although the script is complete, the production of the video has problems. We had hoped using A.I. would accelerate the production process, but it failed completely at producing satisfying results. We will continue to try to produce a finished product for you.

butter someone up_to be sycophant. ISH
@TDGroupEnglishMadeEasy

Well, a sycophant is someone that typically has the trait of not being sincere. That person often praises and fawns over their boss or affluent people. However, a person that "butters someone up" is a person that will act this way just for a brief period and for a specific reason. They are often trying to put another person in a good mood so that they will help them in some way. What I'm trying to say is that people don't usually like a person who is a sycophant, but a person that occasionally "butters someone up" could be a VERY nice and likeable person. I think everyone will occasionally try to "butter someone up" at times in their life. But a sycophant is a person that normally acts insincere most of the time, is not likeable, and not honest with their thoughts and feelings.
