The second one is from the "Fun with Dumb" podcast. Dumbfoundead is a LA based Korean-American rapper with ties to a few rappers who went to Korea from the USA, though likely more known now with his ties to Anderson .Paak and Awkwafina. Jay Park is one of his friends and has been on the podcast a few times. The show is very relaxed and guests are totally free to speak their minds if they wished.

cherry It wasn’t a disrespectful question. The staff made random questions and somehow Peniel picked it. The members behind the camera obviously support him a lot with his stress but they’ve also made jokes and laughed over it before. I think it makes less stress for him by not making the atmosphere weird. (One time during a game Ilhoon called him a baldie, even though it was just in the spur of the game and they all had a good laugh.) of course his health is the most important and yes, he should have refused if he was clearly uncomfortable, but he’s become much more comfortable lately and he didn’t show any discomfort :)

@KStar true but for sj's example, they knew it was something that koreans usually don't talk about openly but they still went on with their question, tho half of sj found it funny, you can clearly tell the other half wasn't comfortable with the situation.

KStar I’m western and I would be really uncomfortable with that question. The interviewer has to understand the interviewees, not the other way around. Vixx went to talk about music, not about which fan they would like to have sex with. Same thing with SuJu. Some people don’t know when to stop talking.

It depends on how the question is phrased and the delivery. The first one was very cringy but with the Mexicans and Ellen, I think they were able to actually ask and be funny without making it seem as if they were intruding on the idols' personal lives

We have helped each others a lot by voting and defending etc. There have been times where some other kpop fandoms would come together to vote for one idol just to see bts lose and igot7s never helped. SO well said! I feel like western interviewers are SO ignorant when it comes to artists from other countries who DON'T have that kind of celebrity culture where famous people hook up with their fans. And I'm not saying that that's what every single western artist does, cus they don't, but it's just so annoying to watch interviews like this where people have ZERO knowledge about other people's culture. Like, excuse YOU for asking inappropriate questions!

I read one comment from a community post somewhere down the road saying that this is why kpop artists and stan aren't ready or suitable for the western music industry bc they never sugarcoat their interviews and are just downright rude. But, honestly, speaking they are right in some parts but I also think that the west interviews should change, no not bc kpop artists aren't ready for their bullsh/t but bc they also need to show respect for their own artists. Sometimes they use this sensitive question for clout, for the clicks and engagements and it keeps on continuing

Yeah, the first host made them uncomfortable... Even Suju looked uneased, but I think they got away with it. I mean, they could be uncles(I'm not a Suju stan) and, in general, these conversations become less embarrassing and more fun as we grow up and I bet they enjoyed picking the one who had to tell the story, but really, those shows shouldn't ask such question...

Shasha Eomma Ikr it’s so frustrating that BTS = kpop in the western media. BTS is a separate group from other kpop groups, even if they’re all one family under kpop. They keep asking questions to other kpop groups related to BTS and comparing them. Monsta X is talented in their own way and they have their own music and talents to share, so why would you ask them about BTS, which has nothing to do with them, other than being friends?

I just think it was a bit disrespectful. Half of them played it off but half of them also looked uncomfortable. Obviously they’ve talked about more sensitive topics before but that was because it was amongst themselves and they were joking. It’s way more disrespectful if you’re talking about these things to a random person, especially when it’s a serious interview. Someone said the interviewer was nice though :) I just think that the interview could definitely do without the question ^^

But don't you think it's important that they get to talk about their hardships? Nothing in life, including being a K-pop idol, is all highs. If you ignore/suppress the lows, it only feels worse. i'm not calling it slavery, even though some groups aren't paid appropriately for the work they do (like the Rose said their company hasn't paid them in 3 years) or are otherwise mistreated by those they trust(ed). Being American, I can say that it also happens here but the intensive training these very young people have to go through should not be pushed under the rug (like I get it but also, does it really have to be that way?). If these situations aren't talked about, they'll continue to happen. I guess I'm biased as a "westerner" but they should be able to talk about the music AND about how they struggled.

TheSinkingShip It would be fine if western media tried to dig into these topics as a a way to bring awarness to these issues, but in my opinion and for what I have noticed so far, they don’t care about this at all - as they are only interested in creating dramatic headlines. It seems to me that they are trying to push this narrative that kpop is some sort of evil industry that has little to do with the actual music. I find it highly unfair that they attack training system without trying to understand the meaning of it, comment about lack of spontaneity, mock the devotion of fans and what is worse - like to bring up recent suicides in kpop to prove their point. In reality kpop industry isn’t any worse than any other western entertainment industry (look at metoo movement in Hollywood). It seems to me that just because they are unfamiliar with it and a lots of aspects in kpop are unheard of in the western world they don’t even try to understand it and see its beauty. I don’t know it just seems to me they are prejudiced. Kpop has so much to offer - sure it has its fair share of problems like any other industry but also a lot of unique and beautiful characteristics and they refuse to see it. And to be fair not all western media are like that - but this isn’t the first time I have seen report like this one (and even worse) and honestly, I am mad it. 😃

The thing is that the mainstream music industry it's pretty similar everywhere you go but western media always try to portray the korean music industry as an evil robot making machine and the idols as pretty/handsome faces with no personality or music talent. The music industry has a really big, ugly side to it but it's the same in every country. Germany, Korea, France, Mexico, USA, etc. It's tiring to see western media trying all the time to push their narrative about the korean music insustry when the don't even care about korean idols/artists.
