Apples were known in Britain from neolithic times, these are what we call today crab apples (Malus sylvestris) and are bitter and can produce nausea if too many are eaten raw.They were most likely used after some preparation such as cooking or fermented as a drink. They can be found in hedgerows and along country roads today. Apples as we know them now were introduced by the Romans around the time of the foundation of christianity and are thought to have originated in the Caucasus Mountain area so it is possible that they were introduced to Scandinavia by the Rus tribes or their precedents in modern day Russia. It is also possible that trading with the Romans introduced sweet apples to the Scandinavians as the Roman Empire never reached into Scandinavia but the Romans traded vastly through their known world.

Apples as commerce from outside occurred to me. High demand among the wealthy is a clue. Otherwise the poor could just pick crab apples for free and the practice would have been so common as to not be worthy of mention. But walnuts look like miniature brains and might have been thought of as brain food (like to like?) for the elderly to ward off forgetfulness. My family came from Scotland and they valued walnuts as health food. They never mentioned Idun but the merits of walnuts might have originated from stories beyond conscious recall.

Hi Arith.I regard Idunn as a Venir Goddess. I always see her as a premother goddess.A teenage youth goddess .Whether she be an Apple giver or a nut giver it does not matter. Both are the beginning of more life.(potential) and the reproduction of life. She is potential & rejuvenation And hope.I always think of her as a spring goddess , but our apples in Australia fruit in Autumn. Can I get some insight into this?- Idunn visited me over all my life in dreams as a young teenage blond girl. Since I was 10 she visited me . We walked through fields, teased and played with each other , we went to festivals, talked and hung out as good friends.She always had a youthful enthusiasm about what was going on. We walked arm in arm in many dreams for many years. I always felt an extreme love for her. And always woke feeling a loss when she wasn't by my side. It wasn't until 3 years ago I asked her name during a lucid dream that she told me "Idunn ". I had never heard of the name before. Afterwards while dreaming she introduced me to the other Gods very briefly , just flashes and let me know why I intuitively named my son ( who is now 18 , Odin ). I see Idunn as an inspiration, as the goddess who Iintroduced me to my ancestral Gods.- She has inspired me to research and learn about my ancestral gods and Goddesses. I love Her deeply and am thankful for her friendship. Arith more input about the "eternal youth " would be appreciated, and anyone else who had experienced her , I would love to hear from..thanks!!

Your videos are fantastic and always well informed. I always come away from them with notes. They are an endless source of inspiration! I did want to note, though, that hunter-gatherers never lived in harmony with their environment. We’ve been hunting species to extinction since we developed the means to do so. It took the Maori about a century to eradicate New Zealand’s moas (maybe 2.5 million of them), as well as its giant eagles. Hunter-gatherers seem to have done the same on every continent they reached. 🤷‍♀️ I’d have to hunt down my sources, but there are some cases from the Pacific Northwest in which custom required over-hunting or -fishing. Our ancestors could be as rational as we are-but they were also measuring with different scales. The same anthropological studies you mention also note that modern or recent HGs have extremely high rates of infanticide-especially for girls. That said, maybe the Scandinavians who told stories about Idunn also imagined a gentler hunter-gather past, as we do today. 😅 Cheers!

Hello! once again another great video. So While watching your video I thought about something. You do a lot of research and are very well versed with the Norse and Vikings. I once heard about an archeological dig or find that supported that the raids actually happened in response to being forced into Christian conversion. I was wondering if you had any information on this or already knew about this.
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger 5 лет назад
Hello there. Yes, that is a common historical "fact" which isn't true. Christianity had impact in Scandinavia but not like in the majority of the rest of Europe. Most of Christianity was actually brought in by the Vikings themselves, not just Christianity but Islam and even Budism and other concepts from other faiths. Scandinavians, especially Norwegians, were very open minded in relation to other religions and adopted them, accepted them and introduced them. Many Norse were Christians, others were pagans, and some were both at once. That's the thing with paganism, adding yet another deity into the already existing pantheon was just beneficial. Some worshipped Jesus as yet another god among the Norse gods. There was no reason to Raid as a response to forced conversion because Scandinavians had no problem with Christianity whatsoever, because they included it in their culture progressively. Christianity was forced later on under Olaf Tryggvason and Haraldr Hárfagra (Fairhair)/ Harald I of Norway. It was precisely due to Haraldr that many Norwegians who wanted to keep the old ways, had to flee from Norway and settled in Iceland. Christianity in Scandinavia wasn't forced by Christian Kings with their Christian armies; it was progressivily introduced until Haraldr wanted to convert everybody.

Dear Arith, this was a very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question about something you said here: you said our ancestors worshiped large animals with great horns. My question is how do we know they worshiped them because of the reason you mentioned? Don't get me wrong, it makes perfect sense to me and I think it would be more than obvious to them, as they were so close to nature and depended so much on it, I just always like to know the reason why we know certain things, whether there is some kind of evidence that points to it or because other tribes that still exist told us, or whatever it might be. Thanks a lot in advance.
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger 5 лет назад
Hello there! We know it due to the (mostly) Paleolithic rock engravings; close to 90% (in some cases more than 90%) are representations of big game, mostly stags and elks and reindeer, always a great emphasis on the horns and being males and representation of procreation with females. I was I was fortunate enough to be in one of the largest rock art complexes of all of Europe, Vale do Côa, a huge extension of rock art from Portugal all the way into Spain. Rock art from the Paleolithic all the way to the Iron Age, with all the ages in-between, and you really have the perception of the evolution of rock art throughout the ages, as well as the evolution of religion and spirituality during prehistory and proto-history.

Great discussion! St else that occurs to me, if Romans were selling apples for immortality then immortality gets commodified- only one step away from the wealthy buying immortality from the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church capitalized on commodification of immortality. The church took homes, jewelry, everything for afterlife favors & forgiveness of sins sold by priests piecemeal to anxious, grieving families.

@Thornspyre
@Thornspyre 5 лет назад
I realise im not Arith, but for what its worth, ive thought of it this way since becoming pagan too. Makes perfect sense to me the "world of men" is literally everything we can (and one day will) explore physically Asgard and the other 7 worlds, represent the realms of the Gods and Goddesses, but also the different psychic states we can possibly attain, through use of meditation, psychedelics, galdr and trancelike states Im no specific "denomination" of Northern Religion, my wife and i are somewhat solitary practioners, so there may be some who disagree with us, but i find if you meditate on things youre not sure of the gods will make you aware of the right and/or wrong ways to go with your faith. This view you describe felt right to us Midgard is the physical realm, Agard is the Gods realm, the other 7 are accessed via attaining different states of consciousness (and may also be the realms of certain deities) Anyway you asked for Arith's opinion not mine, but thought you may appreciate me sharing it anyway, hope its been of some help to you, even if you reject my opinion

@@WeeWait Of course its true we have lost much information on exactly how we should view the world and the gods, and how we should pray to them and many other things, but i honestly believe that we do have the most important tool left Our ability to reason logically and to almost instinctively know what is right, and what isnt The gods cant force us to walk a path, we must choose to do that, and many of the steps we must make ourselves, but they can help us now and then with the occasional next step, or if nothing else, reassure us we dont walk it alone

She sounds like the garden of eden. The earth was destroyed and the new age and Eden was born. The tree of life Eden was taken off the planet. Eden turns into a seed that grows within the human. Loki the trickster reminds me of enki who tricked Adam into drinking the drink that didn't give eternal life. He did this to raise the whole planets conscience. Christians don't like me because I see the similarities within everything like a puzzle.

Loki isn't all about tricks and mischief he is the God of chaos and change,, and why bring up Christian bs and say that idunn and her apples are similar to Christianity which the two are two different things because norse or even paganism in general is a spirituality and Christianity is a religion not a spiritual system

Too bad everything is connected but when someone trys to connect pieces someone comes and scatters the puzzle again. In the bible they are humans and places in every other religion they're called gods. Most Christians don't know what their own book says. I know where the stories came from. It's funny the followers of the way get lumped up with the Catholics and protestants when those guys murdered the followers of the way subverted it perverted it and turned it into a religion of slavery. The 1st church paved the road with their own blood Rome paves the road with everyone else's blood. You guys hate me Christians hate me Muslims hate me and every other religion spirit person hates me. Why because it's all a puzzle and only a few people can put the pieces together.
