CountDoucheula what do you mean by “jouhikko sounds japanese”? Does the name itself sound japanese or do you mean the sounds the instrument makes? By the way, finnish language and japanese language do actually have similarities, but as a finnish person I can say that jouhikko is as finnish as it can get.

@@CountDoucheula Japanese doesn't have vowels like that ou, said as in the English soul (that spelling means always that in Finnish). If the are next to each other Japanese, they are different syllables, more like "jo'uhikko"

Thank you for your comment! I usually use the tuning pegs and the adjustments down the strings. First I tune roughly by the tuning pegs, then tune precisely by the adjustment. And the tuning of 1st string = E4 (or F#4), 2nd = A3 (or B3) (as a drone) and 3rd = D4 (or E4) is commonly used. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for your comment! I read your comment about tuning in my another video too. Thank you. My understanding is that the basic tuning of the jouhikko is the 1st string = F#4, 2nd = B3 and 3rd = E4, except alto jouhikko and bass jouhikko. This tuning is also recommended in the famous jouhikko book "The Bowed Lyre Jouhikko" (R. Nieminen 2017). I use another tuning like E4-A3-D4 too, but basically, I don't change the interval between each string. In other words, the 1st string and the 2nd string are tuned in 5ths, and the 3rd string is always one note lower than the 1st string. I hope this will help.

@@y.hattori6320 thank you very much, if you check my last community post you can see a picture of my current jouhikko, mine is an alto, and in fact I need to replace now the strings because I tried to tune it higher (like standar jouhikko) for a song and it didn't hold. I usually tune mine Bb F C I need to make sure if it's the same interval. And thanks I will check that was I have a copy of the book you mention but an old edition in Finn and I struggle with the translation so that was really helpful, I need to listen to the interval on the keyboard, I play almost by ear. So what do you think is best for an ALTO not to strain the strings (up and down from the drone)? yet again you popped in recommendations and I'm really pleased about your playing, well done! thanks also for your kindness replying

@@yidneth Thank you for your reply. I checked your community post. I think B E A or A D G (the middle string is drone) is good for alto jouhikko. The interval between each string is the same as the standard jouhikko. 1st and 2nd are tuned in fifth, and 3rd is one note lower than 1st. I’ve played my alto jouhikko in higher tuning too (E A D): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zkVYXYb4jc8.html I used fishing line strings in this video. If you tune your alto jouhikko like standard jouhikko, you’d better be careful about the strength of the tailpiece. My alto jouhikko has been broken once before because of higher tuning. The tension of strings was so strong that the string which tied the tailpiece to the body was broken. After that, I tied the tailpiece to the body with a thick wire. And any problems have not occurred since then. If you have any questions, please ask.

@@nicolaisaia8089 Thank you for your comment! I'm glad to hear that! The first string (melody string) is the left side of the middle string on the screen, which is the closest to my right hand. Just as you said, the drone string is the biggest one, the middle one. I hope this helps you :)
