"If An Electrician Did This He Doesn't Give A ****"| Electrical Fault Finding| Electrician In London

In this video I carry out fault finding for an earth continuity issue on a ring circuit I discovered last time I was at the property.
Last time I was at the property putting in some power points for the kitchen and I discovered the issue. To resolve the issue I decide the best course of action is to check for loose connections or to split the ring into two radials on 16 Amp MCBs.
Once the earth continuity issue is resolved the customer asks me to take a look at two lights that aren't working in the kitchen. As the connections are above the ceiling, the customer has to remove the carpet and uplift the floorboards to grant access. When he does this it revealed that the the cables are floating in the void of the floor without a junction box.

An electrician did it..... Yet he, the customer of the sparks, knows the routing of ALL the circuits.....

You wanna say you don't know what your electrician is going to put in? You don't discuss beforehand how they're gonna route stuff and what's going to happen? Not everybody has such an "I don't care" attitude... Also, some people try and fix it themselves before calling an expert, and figure stuff like routing out as part of the debugging process.

@ThatGuyNikolas
@ThatGuyNikolas 3 года назад
@@timderks5960 I'm gonna tell you right now that 9.9 times out of 10 they do not give a shit about how you're gonna do it. Most of the time, all that is discussed is what they want done and where they want it done. Depending on the job or what they want done, I'll tell them what they're options are if I see there's a better way of going about it, or if there's some issue with doing it how the customer wants it. But beyond what they're gonna be using or staring at, they care about as much your average Customer cares about what a car mechanic needs to do beyond "Can you fix it?". If somebody happens to be curious and does want to know, then I'm happy to explain it to them. But it's rarely the case.

Yeah, those sorts of lights are ones where you have a central rose and those pendants all connect into that, then you install hooks to tie the cables off to so they hang from there. It's a part of the industrial look they're supposed to have.

@@supremeicecreme1658 Definitely doesn't mean there shouldn't be some fitting to connect it to the ceiling. It looks less industrial and more like a machete showroom in a home store that isn't actually a building, so it doesn't matter if the lights are attached without fittings.

I used to live in a house owned by an electrician (who worked at a nearby power station) it had the original cotton insulated wires in it, some asbestos insulated wires and the new power points were all wired in around the new RCD with way too much wire in between. He told me that all the wiring was sloppily done and asked if I had done it myself, I had all the documents that the electricians give you, so I was able to show him proof an electrician had done the work. I had him check the otherthree fans, shower, kitchen etc, I went up into the loft to have a look. He was right, everything looked like a blind monkey had done it. We do tend to trust tradesmen.

Oh, that lockout on the Earth Leakage switches. From what I heard, that was to stop idiots from using tape or wire to hold them in the on position. Even if held it on, and you pressed the test (or have a fault), it would still trip it and cut power (similar to how high-current commercial breakers work). This is why we can't have nice things.

US electrician here. Is it legal to have hidden junctions in the UK? Here in the US, all wires must be junctioned in a device box that is accessible, and cannot be done in a floor space between floors unless the box is accessible, usually from a light fixture box or ceiling junction box, and less commonly in a floor box. Buried boxes and junctions are some of the most time consuming faults to find. That is a fire waiting to happen.

You put the highest of the 5x test on the certificate as your 30mA rcd is for additional protection
@jameswavs2981
@jameswavs2981 3 года назад
Correct although I prefer the 17th edition minor works that stated both max 1x and 5x. At least it proved you tested the rcd worked at its rated trip current.

English is not my first language so i was wondering what you mean when you say the circuit is a radio?

24:02 All you have to say is what if a kid knocked over a bottle of pop and it went straight down there between the boards, or this pipe here burst?

Wow. I did amateur electrics for years, up until the early 90s, referring to a copy of the 17th edition of the IEEE regs as it was then. Installed consumer units, fixed a shower whose metalwork was live, fault found and fixed all sorts. You need a logical mind and high standards. One day I found some Polish lads had wired in a garden office building and just left the cover off a consumer unit under the stairs. There was a child's scooter handlebars next to live mains terminals.

For a bit of balance, I’m currently in self build hell and have had three neutral burn outs including the smart meter melting. These all occurred where the ‘professionals’ had been at work.
