Sometimes I get so sad and angry when I think about all how they robbed us of watching Billy becoming a better person, helping the gang, kicking some monsters, coming to terms with his sexuality, freeing himself of his father's abuse. He was one of the most interesting characters in the show and it hurts that they took an abuse victim and made him into a cliché villain. They messed up with him, in my opinion. Can't believe fans write better stories about him and understand him mre that the actual creators of the show.

i know this is an old comment but i wanted to chime along. while i agree i sensed a homoerotic subtext, it was never gonna happen. intentional or unintentional it doesn’t even matter since unfortunately there was just no way they would have let a m/m ship like this, with the sorts of guys they are and their roles etc happen especially with the complexity of a rivals to lovers arc, handling and showcasing bisexuality in general well, and the convenient environment of the more anti-gay time period making it especially less likely something like these two would happen (robin and will aside, as nice as it is to have these character as rep, i just hate opportunities with a dynamic like steve/billy and these characters having an active relationship being squandered and never having a chance in hell in these sorts of shows.) it sucks but that’s how it goes as usual. i see these potentials in ships like this, whether there was actually anything subtext or not in the source material to back them up, and it’s just always wasted. it’s nice we do have more rep as a general thing but the type of rep that super appeals to me and that i can relate to doesn’t rly show up in the shows i watch like this one.

(old comment i know) well you must know why these sort of couples don’t happen. the big one is that it’s m/m making it especially less likely , even just showcasing either of them as bisexual on their own would’ve been impossible. meanwhile there’s a reason they feel like they can allow a character like robin to be queer, and the quiet meeker will to be likely gay (they’ve been alluding to it since s1 and now in s4 his painfully obvious feelings for someone has ramped up in well, obviousness. i’m not finished so i don’t know what they’re doing or planning with will) however time and again, i’ll see characters like steve and billy wasted as such amazing couple potential, even when there’s some sense of subtext to back it up (intentional or not i don’t know with billy and steve, but there was something and it was kind of ridiculous lol)

(old comment i know ) yeah but that’s romantic-centric in terms of m/f couples. seriously the show loves pairing everybody up with somebody and of course it’s unsurprisingly m/f. and i’m not against the pairings but it just as usual highlights how m/f couples can be a thing with no problem with these types of shows, even when slow burn like with joyce/hopper , you /never/ have to worry about it . meanwhile even if there’s homoerotic subtext (intentional or not) we know we can’t have a super solid m/m relationship involving characters like steve and billy and it just sucks to waste what would be an amazing ship with their whole dynamic, the rivals to lovers arc, the bisexual rep on top of that etc and let’s be real, sure the show is set in the 80s more anti gay time period but we all know having certain characters like a “steve, like a ”billy”, be bisexual/queer /and/ in an active relationship with each other still would not have had a snow ball’s chance in hell they go with safer options like robin,( and i love her i do) and whatever they’ve been doing with will since the allusions to him being gay/queer since season 1 (and not done with season 4 so i don’t know yet the full picture of what they’re planning cuz it’s even more painfullly obvious will’s feelings toward someone) but the rep that especially appeals to me and i can relate to just doesn’t happen often with these sorts of shows it seems
