Ma io penso che anche gli IF appartengono a quelle bands che proponevano un certo linguaggio di avanguardia musicale, certamente il loro sound era più improntato a delle sonorità più calde rispetto ai SOFT MACHINE HENRY COW MATCHING MOLE HATFIELD & THE NORTH NATIONAL HEALTH EGG GONG MAGMA etc !!!!!!! Ma NON per questo meno originali e ripeto parimenti INNOVATIVI con loro potrei citare anche i COLOSSEUM o i WARM DUST , BLOOD SWEAT &TEARS o primi CHICAGO, differenti nei climi musicali più briosi, solari rispetto all' introspezione sonora più dark e cerebrale di bands come detto prima es SOFT MACHINE,EGG, HATFIELD & THE NORTH etc ma NON per questo meno valide ed innovative e sicuramente affascinanti nelle loro proposte musicali!!!!!! Il prog rock, NON è sempre sinonimo di suoni oscuri misteriosi e cerebrali, c'è anche la sua parte più solare e comunicativa senza mai scadere o quasi nel banale,nello scontato. Come sempre sta ai musicisti saper creare delle suggestioni,dei mondi sonori che sappiano affascinare coinvolgere chi ascolta e naturalmente appassionare i musicisti stessi che propongono certe idee musicali. Quindi in sintesi,sia chi propone un sound cerebrale oscuro misterioso e chi all' opposto cioè solare brioso e comunicativo, alla base di tutto c'è una cosa basilare importante fondamentale e cioè LE IDEE, la CREATIVITÀ dei musicisti che sono quelli che regalano emozioni in musica,a se stessi e a chi ascolta ed apprezza la buona musica.

When I saw them at the Whiskey Ian Paice went up and crouched down by the hi-hat talking to Cliff Davies during the set. Cliff used that same blue sparkle Ludwig kit. Man he was flying up there.

Better? You might prefer them more but that doesn't make them 'better'. It is unfortunate that the original Chicago is now defined by band's pop hits of the 80s and onward, because when Chicago first hit they were such a transformational force. This is a live version of the first track those of us who bought the album 'Chicago Transit Authority' got to hear. If it interests you, the complete concert is on RU-vid. I'm the son of Lew Futterman, If's manager and producer. Dennis was a talented guy, but Cliff Davies, who replaced him, was actually a big step up. If you listen to Cliff's live performance here compared to the original Albums, he is much more the backbone of the performances.

Well, I remember Dick telling us kids that Dennis was the only rock drummer he ever met who could play jazz, and the whole Cliff Davies era was Dick's least favorite IF period because he felt they were slowly becoming a shitty hard rock band with little jazz left. Not just another bunch...was the IF record that Dick was most disappointed in. In fact, it was the reason Dick dissolved the band. Cliff was too loud, too busy and too much rock for Dick's taste, although he liked him very much as a person. Wow, I just remembered...Josh! We had a fight in the pool room at the Manor once!

Cliff has chops for sure, but IMHO solos should be musical rather than just a display of speed. Wasn't Dennis only 17 or 18 years old when IF broke in approx. 1970? I just remember thinking that Dennis' construction of rudiments into fills that fit the space and tempo were extraordinary. I still listen to my early IF CD's and have incorporated a few of Dennis' licks into my playing.

@@mattiasorre1718 If I remember correctly, your dad and Cliff butted heads a lot, which may have had an impact on his feelings about that era. I certainly don't think If was ever remotely Hard Rock. That said, I loved your dad and always enjoyed hanging out with him as a kid and as a young adult when I lived in London for a bit. No memory of that fight, but it wouldn't surprise me. I got into a lot of fights as a kid. Hit me up on Facebook. It would be fun to catch up.

@@joshf1882 Well, they all went off and joined heavy rocker Nugent, so I dont think Dick was far off...reminds me of colin hodgkinsons remark who played a lot with dick and also played with whitesnake - during a really loud and heavy part with whitesnake, he whispered to the guitarist "the blues, man!" at which they both cracked up with laughter. I also remember him shaking his head sadly, both at Foreigner and Nugent (particularly the latter which he really thought was bad music). He was also really impressed by Elliots feel. Yeah, we lived together at the manor, we had a fight in the billiard hall, I threw a billiard ball at you. Then I hid under the bed and wrote a fake suicide letter because I was mortified when you started crying :p Your favourite song was "Thats the way uhu uhu I like it uhu uhu"

I was at the show recorded at Liverpool uni in 1970 or 71 can't quite recall, the show was called 'Out Front'. Went straight out afterwards and bought 'If three' and have played this track to death!
