We all get stuck in our careers. Whether it's because of the team we're on, the point of life we're in, etc.
So I wanted to talk about some tips I have for people looking to supercharge their data engineering career.

About me:
I have spent my career focused on all forms of data. I have focused on developing algorithms to detect fraud, reduce patient readmission and redesign insurance provider policy to help reduce the overall cost of healthcare. I have also helped develop analytics for marketing and IT operations in order to optimize limited resources such as employees and budget. I privately consult on data science and engineering problems both solo as well as with a company called Acheron Analytics. I have experience both working hands-on with technical problems as well as helping leadership teams develop strategies to maximize their data.

Perfect timing. I think layoff prior to any possible promotion just made me feel stuck. But, I can still grow regardless by taking "career" ownership. Also, yes - stay opinionated. Requires owning our craft enough to persuade & influence.

Love your topic about having someone more experienced to have around as junior. I worked with some godlike developers across my career some others were even scared to work with not to look dumb next to them. I was not and they handed me so much knowledge over (no online course or bootcamp can do that)

Yes! Working with smarter developers is a cheat code

Words of wisdom Ben. I am very confident person and thanks to making some risky ambitous decisions am now where I want to be (financialy & technically). I had to suffer because of it because of tech & also language depth (had to improve my german a lot) & demands put on me were/are high, but it's a great journey. However many of my former colleagues were too scared or too lazy to do it hence they are stuck in their career (& usually not very satisfied).

I am glad you were able to grow through all those challenges. Any tips for any future reader of these comments?

@@SeattleDataGuy the most important is to trust yourself. Many people think about how much they don't know yet instead of promoting how much they do. Actually the people with no to minimal exp often thing how good they are not knowing how much more they still need to learn thus tries to get jobs way out of their reach (like DE). The Dunning-Kruger effect describes that well. You may make a video about this if you like heh

What are the best data conferences or networking events you would recommend? I’ve asked this before, but I’d like to ask again since the data landscape changes very quickly.

Either you believe in yourself or you don't. Yes, mastering some stuff can theoretically raise your confidence, however most of it is in your head

I find your videos really hard to watch with all the audio effects you've put in, which is a shame as the content is great and I've been watching you for ages! I think the visual effects are great, but when your primary delivery of content is through speech, the audio effects can really detract from what you are trying to say.

I’d also add a point (building on “work on a technical team”) to chart a path to the company you want to eventually work for. If you want to work for Netflix, but you work for Mom n’ Pop Bolt Shop, you might want to target a bigger Bolt Shop, then a same size tech company, then a bigger tech company, etc. I see a lot of Jr/mid level data engineers asking why their resume isn’t being noticed, or how to get skills that are important to their dream company.
