Sitting down with my Seiko SLA051, I discuss my own watch addiction, my wish to be able to police my own bad watch habits, and Craig Ferguson's insightful observations about social media.
I used to have the SPB077 and I sold it. Sold it because I had to get the LX Spring drive. I sold a lot of watches to get it. And I remind myself that I had to sell those watches to get my grail. Which I still don’t regret because I lessened my collection… to a degree. But sometimes when I hear it on social media I like… “oh i remember having that watch. It was good looking” haha but that’s a personal problem if I can’t control that. Anyway , reading psychoanalysis such as Jung may give insight as the Shadow (the unconscious) hides a lot of power that can be used to counterbalance the real world.
I come to your channel for a little watch addiction therapy, so definitely keep it up. You’re not alone on the always wanting another watch, McMahon. I find myself trying to think of where a watch would fit into my collection as soon as I see a cool one. I’m really trying to do that less. By the way you need the Baby Marinemaster. 😅
I think that social media is certainly something that can take over someone's life far too much. It's hard to have in moderation, and requires a lot of discipline to do so. Dunning-Kruger is something that comes up a lot in my primary hobby/experience field, firearms and firearms training. As the old adage goes, "Someone knows enough to be dangerous". A lot of people on social media tout themselves as "experts", but they've barely stepped into the shallow part of the pool. Love Dr. Mike too, he's a hoot. Been using some of his advice at the gym as of late. Thanks for the upload McMahon!
I believe there could an addition to the Watch Potency Principle, the watch cannibalism principle: if you have duplicates or watches that try to serve the same role, one watch will try to cannibalize the wrist time of the other. So yes, while i have three divers and a chrono (+ 1 g shock beater) (4 watches is my balance for variety and potency), each diver has either different appeal (tool vs dressy/smart), or dial color or movement type and bracelet/strap options. The WPP by itself does not account for a small collection of repeats @jeff what do you think?
