I don't know if Nyanners has already purchased a sword, but even if she has, I'd recommend anyone wanting a sword to check out this RU-vidr called Matthew Jensen, his videos are very informative for swords in general but mostly for katanas. He has a vid on a nice $60 one. A pro tip is to avoid stainless steel swords unless they're only for decoration, as they become too brittle and can shatter, which is dangerous for the wielder. Carbon steel is generally what's used. You generally want a high carbon content, around 0.5 to 0.7 (1050-1070) if you're looking for a more realistic sword or just want to cut things. One last tip is if you get any sharp sword (especially katanas), make sure you draw it correctly. There are RU-vid videos out there explaining how to do it, but doing it wrong eventually cuts through the scabbard and potentially into your hand.
