Pre-recorded on September 30, 1938, this early version of "If I Only Had A Brain" was thought to be lost until it was released in 2009 by Warner Home Video. This version is much different than what was re-recorded and used in the film.

Well, I think they were right. This version is nice, but I think the second one they recorded suits the film better. It is amazing how this lost stuff continues to pop up over time!

Robert Gold I agree the version they used in the movie is way better I find this version interesting but too slow for my taste

Also suits the Scarecrow character better, his was a very upbeat and cheerful personality

I've watched this film since I was old enough to remember back in the 50's and I'm sure I've seen it more than 100 times. That said, while I'm more than a little familiar with the original version (if I sang I could do it from memory) I enjoyed this original version every bit as much even without the live action video to accompany the audio that we are listening to now. When you get to a certain age perhaps picking apart other people's art just isn't satisfying anymore because it's simply okay to just enjoy it. Now I have 2 versions of this beautiful song in my head and I'm grateful for the addition. One person's trash can certainly be another's treasure. Life is short folks, don't waste time not enjoying every moment of the all too brief ride.

Essa é minha música preferida de mágico de Oz, adoro o instrumento que toca depois de ele falar: “Brain” no refrão. É tão mágico e lindo… amo, amo, amo✨❤️

Ray Bolger didn't have a very strong singing voice really so he could have had some tutoring before they recorded the final version.He lightens his voice to sing this song anyway.

It's not a matter of his actual singing ability as much as it's his ability to sell a song, and that he does expertly! 🙂

I’m so glad they didn’t use this version. It was very good but I think kinda somber for the movie. They needed something more peppy and they had enough sense to re- record this song and it’s the song we all know and love

So!! Am I right in saying that this version has only had a vinyl release to the public? On that "limited number" green disc about two years ago now? And if this is the case then why? Is it going to be included among the "extras" on future DVD/Blu-Ray releases of "Oz" ?

+Davidalp1 Partly right. It was featured on the Amazon page for the 2009 Blu-ray boxed set release. Then in 2014 it was a digital extra for purchasers of the special edition green vinyl release. Those who bought the record were given a link and code to download the audio file, it wasn't on the actual record. The producers of that vinyl release lamely said that it was a "newly discovered" track that could only be obtained by purchasing the record. That simply wasn't true, and if they had done their homework a little bit they would have known that. But, since it was produced by Warner Bros.' budget label "WaterTower Music" that's not surprising. Regardless, it's a fun rendition and although I'm glad they used the uptempo version in the film, I'm happy that this survived. More Oz is always welcome!

+TheJudyRoomVideos It wasn't on the actual "Green" vinyl record? How bizarre ! (I don't have that record btw) but I just assumed that was the whole point of that limited edition vinyl release -- i.e to get something "new" out there, on record -- as a rare "collectors item"? So what exactly IS on the green vinyl record?

+Davidalp1 The green vinyl record is a copy of the Rhino single CD release of the soundtrack. The version they remastered back in the mid-1990s. In actuality, it's the first time the remastered soundtrack has ever been on LP. Here's the link to the Judy Garland Online Discography's page about the green record: thejudyroom.com/soundtracks/oz-record-store.html

I feel like this was changed because it didn't fit the scarecrow's hyperactive and charismatic personality. It sounds way too shy and soft spoken, which are traits reserved for the tin man. Doesn't mean it doesn't sound good though.

Which DVD release of The Wizard Of Oz was this recording put in?
@TheJudyRoomVideos
@TheJudyRoomVideos 4 года назад
It's not on any DVD or Blu-ray (or 4K) release. It was provided as a "digital download" when one purchased one of the vinyl releases from a few years ago. Before that, it was on Amazon, on their page for the 70th anniversary DVD/Blu-ray boxed set.
