Rumor has it, Frances Fisher hosted a screening for Winnie The Pooh Blood and Honey at the very last minute during the Oscar nomination voting. She just posted on her Instagram that the movie is locked all the categories including a Lifetime Achievement Award for the director himself 😂
The Iron Claw and Zac Efron are being criminally overlooked this awards season. Efron delivers a layered heartbreaking performance, the best of his career and at least has earned a nomination
I cannot help but be annoyed and baffled at the fact that Anatomy of a Fall wasn't our (France's) nominee for international feature when it is in legitimate contention for making the Best Picture list.
Apparently some people assumed that the director, Justine Triet gave a criticism to the French President while accepting Anatomy Of A Fall's Palme d'Or win at the Cannes Film Festival was the main reason why France didn't submit Anatomy Of A Fall as their contender. And now, they screwed up by that 😂
Never stop talking about the Creator. I would never have gone to see it if you hadn’t been so enthusiastic about it, and it was one of my favourite films of the year.
Man same here. It was incredible. I don’t understand why people didn’t like it and it’s unfortunate because we rarely ever get original sci fi like this anymore.
@@Nimajneb42069 original sci-fi? It checked all the possible cliches, it was so predictable that it was laughable and the many big events made no sense or were so stupid that the audience in my theatre was laughing. The stand by button in robots? The tanks big as a football field that can’t cross a wood bridge, The dumb evil American army that came out straight from power ranger, The robot sleeping and I can on and on.. the writing was an insult to our intelligence, creator has amazing visuals, good acting but you couldn’t find a more wrong adjective than “original”
I love these videos where you do who you'd nominate and who you think will get nominated. It makes your Oscar video more fun and unique. I wish more people would do this
I REALLY REALLY hope Greta Lee gets nominated for best actress. Past Lives is such a beautiful, intimate film and her performance is so moving. Also it would be absolutely criminal if Cillian Murphy does not win the Oscar for best actor!
Absolutely, two of my favourite films of the year so far, and ik the Oscars do have to appeal to popular consensus and therefore lots of Oppenheimer stuff, but i dont think it deserves to completely sweep the oscars given how many great movies we have this year (although i guess u can say that of any year)
The two movies of 2023 that really made me laugh out loud were American Fiction because of the writing and Blackberry because of Glenn Howerton's performance 😂 I'm going to feel very bad if Barbie is given the Adapted screenplay Oscar over American Fiction
@@sexydirrtymoney not only screen time, she doesn't carry the movie plotwise. It is a very important character but hardly the protagonist. A solid performance but not particularly challenging or extraordinary. I haven't seen the other actresses but Robbie and I think that Robbie accomplished in convincing us she is Barbie rather than Margot. For Gladstone her greatest merit is that she might save the Scorsese movie from being otherwise snubbed.
At this point, any actor that will unlikely get a nomination like Zac Efron for The Iron Claw or Rachel McAdams for Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, my only question is, "Where's Francis Fisher when you need her the most???" 😂😂😂
Dan called it about the Greta maybe not being nominated and barbie maybe coming up short in some categories . Im sure we will here about it later todat.
@@jim1242 He said that many people thought Gerwig could get snubbed but he still predicted she would get the nom. So he didn't really call it, although he was close.
The kid in Anatomy of a Fall was AMAZING. He was so good that I was worried about it. He was so good that I thought the director was just abusing him to put him in the emotional state of the character. It was so so real
Just saw this film. Wow! That kid… his name is Milo Machado Graner… his performance was HYPNOTIC. Emotional and powerful! He really captivated me during the third act of the film!
@@dojomojo5085 I definitely agree with that. I wouldn’t necessarily be upset if Spider-verse won Best Picture seeing as I saw it three times in theaters and bought the 4K Blu-Ray.
@@dojomojo5085I really like the movie, but I don't like the precedent it sets. For me, movies should be self-contained and not ½ a story. I don't mind two parters, but I don't like that I have to wait a year (now more after the strike) to see the rest of the movie. Infinity War was not a perfect movie (I would say it was just okay/pretty good), but it has a clear beginning, middle, and end. For Across the Spider-Verse, I get that this is the case if you look at it from Spider-Gwen's POV, but in the end, Miles is the main protagonist. I didn't feel like he had a completed arc and that the story concluded at a reasonable place.
Does anyone else think it feels a bit “lazy”, that all the best actor/actress nominations come from the films nominated for best picture? For example RDJ I didn’t think was bad in Oppenheimer, but I don’t know if it was the best acting of anyone this year. Surely there were also great performances in films that overall weren’t award worthy?
Well it does make sense doesn't it? It's rare that a film gets nominated for best picture without any acting nominations since acting is one of the main aspects of the film. Also, best pictures nominees are the ones that get watched more voting members. It's impossible for the members to watch every movie that gets released in a year, so the ones that are considered the best of the year will most likely get more eyes on it. Therefore it makes sense for the best acting categories to come from movies that have been watched more.
@@maplenerd22 "acting is one of the main aspects of the film" acting is certainly one aspect, but there are plenty of others; plot, characterisation, direction, editing, ... a film doesn't necessarily need the "best" acting to be a great film. Similarly, an actor can still have an award winning performance, even if the plot of the film isn't award worthy
I'm praying for lots of noms for The Holdovers. Picture, Director Actor, Supporting Actor+Actress, Screenplay. It's by far the film that gave me the most positive feelings this year and it's going to become an annual holiday movie staple in my house.
I really think the Producers Guild doing both Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest over movies like The Color Purple and Spiderverse really sealed the 10.
Maaaaaan it sucks that here in New Zealand we have to wait til AFTER the awards for a lot of these movies. I still can't see American Fiction or Zone of Interest in a theatre.
Anatomy of a Fall, American Fiction and The Zone of interest was the best movie theater experiences I had this year, all for different reasons. Which imo says a lot about the caliber of movies that came out this year.
It will be criminal if Emma Stone gets shafted. I thought Gladstone was perfectly fine but Stone blew me away. It was her best role, even over La La Land. The fact that people use the "she already won" proves how subjective and pointless these awards can be
I think it's a shame that Godzilla: Minus One doesn't seem to be garnering any traction outside of Visual Effects. It truly deserves to be in the conversation.
I'm genuinely so confused why everyone loves Barbie. For my parents, it was boring (so boring that my mom fell asleep multiple times and my dad didn't even chuckle once. For me it was just meh. I like some of the message of the movie, but I wasn't blown away by it. For someone who sees this comment that really likes Barbie, I'm generally curious why you really like the movie.
As much as I want it to, I don't see Past Lives winning anything, but a nomination or two would be nice. My film of the year. Besides that I hope Penelope Cruz isn't overlooked, didn't enjoy Ferrari but she was brilliant.
Slim to none....if it was the only Asian film contending maybe but with The Boy and the Heron (Ghibli) and Past Lives (A24) Godzilla would nned a strong push from it's production company (TOHO) and they don't do that. We could see a vote split
Appreciate putting a spotlight on Iron Claw, Are You There God..and The Creator. Hope that some movies that have been quiet this season can give us a surprise. -My heart is not prepared for the Best Supporting Actor race! Downey, Gosling, Ruffalo and Sterling K. are among my favorites to watch and I would be extremely happy for any of them to win. Gosling might have my favorite performance of the year. -Video length also shorter as you don’t have to explain to anyone who Andrea Risebourough is!
I only have one question. It's the only question. It applies to ALL of these movie awards ceremonies. And the frustrating part is no one else seems to see it. Why is one of the most critically positive reviewed movies of 2023, Godzilla Minus One, not getting any recognition?
I went to a secret screening for Anatomy of a Fall. I had no idea what it was, but it ended up being one of my favorite movies. Milo stole every scene he was in and it would make my year if he was nominated. Phenomenal young actor.
My choice Best actor: Murphy (thought he might lose to the famous "narrative" appeal) Best actress: stone Best supporting actor: downey Best supporting actress: da vine Best picture: oppenheimer or poor things Best director: nolan Animate: the boy and the heron
I think Oppenheimer wins Best Picture, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Director for Chris Nolan. It just being an Oscar-type movie that played so well with general audiences gives it a massive edge in my eyes. Emma Stone for Best Actress would be my other pick, I haven't see a lot of the movies that the Best Supporting Actress category represents so can't guess that one.
Interesting you think the acting wins will be wildcards!! I think the winners are clear as day this year. Cillian, Lily Gladstone DaVine, And RDJ are all I think 100% locks

It is not happening but it would have been nice to see Blackberry anywhere. Too small of a Canadian movie to really make an impact (but the movie has a lot of Hollywood names so it is very American in its appeal)
Let's see how he did in the "who I think will be nominated" side of things: -Supporting Actress: Would have gotten 5/5 except he last-minute changed Ferrera for Pike. 4/5 -Supporting Actor: 100% spot on. Fantastic guess on Sterling K. Brown. 5/5 -Actress: Like most of us, he predicted Robbie and did not expect Bening, although he did think she would have more chances than Hüller. 4/5 -Actor: Perfect prediction. 5/5 -Director: Almost predicted the Gerwig snub, but not quite. Good prediction on Scorsese, but missed Glazer (although he did have it as a personal pick). 4/5 -Picture: Picked The Color Purple over The Zone of Interest, although he immediately mentioned it as having chances. 9/10 All in all, 31/35, or 89% accuracy. Not bad at all!
Some categories like supporting actor and best actress are brutal this year but these are my picks, the most notable films I haven’t seen yet are probably Anatomy of a Fall, Color Purple and American Fiction: *Best picture* : • Oppenheimer • Poor Things • Barbie • Killers of the Flower Moon • Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse • Past Lives • The Holdovers • May December • The Boy and the Heron • Godzilla Minus One *Best director* : • Christopher Nolan • Greta Gerwig • Celine Song • Martin Scorsese • Yorgos Lanthimos *Best actor* : • Cillian Murphy • Paul Giamatti • Leonardo DiCaprio • Bradley Cooper • Teo Yoo *Best actress* : • Emma Stone • Lily Gladstone • Greta Lee • Mia McKenna-Bruce • Carey Mulligan *Supporting actor* (Feels brutal to snub Dafoe, John Magaro and especially Ruffalo): • Ryan Gosling • Robert Downey Jr • Charles Melton • Dominic Sessa • De Niro *Supporting actress* : • Da’Vine Joy Randolph • Emily Blunt • Julianne Moore • Jodie Foster • Viola Davis
Maestro not getting enough love in the awards season, loved that film Mulligan is exceptional, and Cooper really coming on as a director the bolder more elaborate, dynamic first half of the film is my favourite, but even in the more serious, realistic second half he is not getting enough credit for the way he frames certain shots, loved the Snoopy scene!
CILLIAN MURPHY gives the performance of a lifetime in a decade defining film. I want to see the Oscar in his hand more than any other win. Hope Oppenheimer sweeps the rest of the season but especially the Oscars.
I think Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is being overlooked… and Emma Stone was so great I just don’t see her not being nominated… I enjoyed Maestro, but I don’t personally have Carey Mulligan as my personal top 5 performances of the year
As a fan of animation, I'm really interested in seeing what the animated movie nominees are going to be. It was, if not a great year for animation, a distinctly weird year; the breakout hit was an adaptation of a video game, both Disney's and Dreamworks' offerings were sacrificed mercilessly, critically and financially, and the Pixar movie starting off dead on arrival at the box office before then clawing out of its coffin like the Bride in Kill Bill, walking across the road and, battered and dirty, ordering a glass of water at the nearby diner. Suzume, Makoto Shinkai's latest was released this year domestically (it was a late 2022 release in Japan), as was Hayao Miyazaki's latest final movie, Boy and the Heron (How Do You Live?), giving us a genuine possibility of having two anime nominations in the same year--three, if enough voters have heard of the long running Slam Dunk manga and anime series (I have yet to see that one myself). And we have several examples of the kind of dynamic cel-shaded/2D aesthetic CGI movies pioneered by the original Spiderverse (the Spiderverse sequel, Nimona, TMNT). Aardman made a Chicken Run sequel, Adam Sandler starred in a well-received animated film about a lizard, and there was a movie about Jersey crabs that has been getting a lot of relatively glowing reviews among animation fans but is flying well under the radar (it only has 3 critic reviews on RT, one of which is from a prominent animation youtuber). My personal nominations would be: Across the Spiderverse (for the most part, I love this movie, but the followup film has the potential to retroactively sour the movie for me if they don't address the "canon" events BS in a satisfactory way, because as a supposed natural force constantly course correcting these spiderpeople (something I feel will be explained as third party interference in the sequel rather than natural, but potentially not), it makes not one lick of sense, especially when some of these characters, including Gwen, know beforehand about upcoming events and would have to purposefully allow them to happen, which by itself should be an anomaly--you are not going to have the same emotional effect from an event if you knowingly allow it to happen, so it can't be something that "builds character." I do have faith that, again, this will be shown to not be a natural force, but I've been wrong before--I got burned by Force Awakens by believing there was always a plan for JJ's stupid mystery boxes). Suzume (at first, I thought it was going to play out like a disaster of the week battle shonen, since the characters have to travel from place to place to ward off and seal these doors from which an invisible kaiju snake/worm/dragon is able to escape, but halfway through, it abandons that structure to focus on a low-key road movie. In fact, a lot of the movie is spent fleshing out all of the normal (if quirky) people the two leads meet along the way and who aid in their quest in little ways, while the main story deals in part with generational trauma, but in a darker way than Encanto (one of the characters is essentially made to pay for the sins of the fathers, so to speak, and it's clearly making a point about how the previous generations keep kicking the can down the road and now the new generation has to deal with the effects)). Nimona (this is what I thought we were going to get with Shrek, something that really interrogated the concept of fairy tales instead of simply being meta as a joke; when Nimona cast up Dio's devil horns and said, "Metal," after laying waste to the castle, I knew I was going to like the movie--I have some issues with some of the latter parts of the movie (I'm kind of torn on the suicide attempt, for one, and I think they could have done more to explore the TERF elements (the knight is gay, but for much of the movie, he doesn't fully accept Nimona, who is obviously an analog for the transexual experience)) but for the most part, it's a really good movie...with some unfinished renders, thanks to the well-publicized studio shenanigans (Disney buying Blue Sky only to shut it down and CANCEL the nearly complete Nimona; thankfully, the crew were able to acquire funding to finish the movie to some extent--I just feel like if Disney had allowed it to continue under their umbrella, it would have had flashier colors and effects, but then, just look at Wish, which tried a similar art style and had the budget and still looks kind of unfinished)., Boy and the Heron (the first Miyazaki film since Princess Mononoke that caught me completely off guard by its violence and potential nightmare fuel; I've only seen it once and I have questions that might not be answered until a second, subbed viewing, but it is a singularly weird movie that might not have any true answers). Elemental (I think it's more successful as an immigration story than a romantic comedy, but I know some who dig the romance and don't even see the immigration angle, but in either case it fails to truly mesh the two concepts in a satisfactory manner, as the central conceit of elements=race has some implications that the movie never fully explores or thought completely through (maybe if you're trying to make the point that races can coexist, maybe don't make it so that they can snuff each other out just by getting too close to each other, and maybe don't make them "types" (Fire people are hot-heads, water people are too sensitive and cry a lot. That said, it's still better in my opinion than the rest of the contenders that I've seen this year--again, weird year, not necessarily a great year). I don't think the Academy picks will differ that much. They may pick Wish instead of Elemental, they'll likely only pick one of the anime (longshot, that anime will be Slam Dunk, but I think with the Golden Globes win, Boy and the Heron is the lock, though I personally preferred Suzume), and they'll shove Super Mario Brothers Movie in there somehow just for being so successful, despite it being mid as hell and with a script copy and pasted from Smash Bros cut scenes. I don't think the new Chicken Run was nearly as well regarded as the previous film, but it or TMNT could be a longshot nomination to knock off Nimona if they decide to take off points for the unfinished look of the animation).
Replace Suzume with TMNT and you have my list dead on... personally I think that Spiderverse takes it (wouldn't be at all surprised at a win for Miyazaki though) but I would be content with any of the 5 winning it all... except maybe Elemental (which was good, but in my opinion the other 4 were clearly better films.)
If an animated film has to be nominated for this year's Oscars, as much as I love ATSV, I don't think it would be that one. I think it would be/should be The Boy and the Heron, an equally stunning and strong film (which has the benefit of having a complete story)
Really hoping Downey gets the Supporting Actor Oscar. His performance had to have equal weight to Cillian's, to carry the intensity and momentum of the film, and he more than did that. He avoided the stereotypical portrayal of the petty bureaucrat. Strauss was a complex person, and Downey conveyed that brilliantly. Also, Downey's work ethic, his generosity and lack of ego with his fellow actors deserves a spotlight, to be an example for others in his profession. All of these performances are great, and the whole concept of turning this art into a competition is a bit unhelpful. Kind of wish that instead of awards ceremonies there was just a coming together and celebration of all the films and filmmakers.
Dan, I just watched “The Iron Claw” and I thought it was a fantastic film and one of the best performances by Zac Efron. Why has this movie and his performance gotten no awards buzz?
