Bro... The timing on this video is crazy. I just picked my guitar back up over the weekend after not touching it for like 15 years.... Because I was self teaching like a dumbass back in MySpace days, and learned NOTHING so I gave up. Maybe I'll follow this blueprint, it's so coincidentally timed lol
Crazy 3 days ago i decided im gonna have to take it seriously. 2 days ago i saw a video dean lamb say he needed to get better to be in archspire yesterday i saw a video on Gerard way saying he had to practice 4 hours a day to get good enough to go solo and today this. The universe wants it! 😅
You need a real inspiration to get back into playing . Like a riff or a song that raises the hairs on your neck and makes you go “holy shit I need to learn this” . That is always what kept me playing my guitar and made me fall in love with this instrument. Of course that won’t get you to professional level of playing but that’s what guitar is all about for me , the love for music and playing my fav songs
Bro is easy cmon just practice every day Im playing for 1 year and 3 months and I can play almost every song except songs like nobody by avenged sevenfold
26:07 *"I can´t give you any Practice Tips when it comes to that..."* - Basic *'Law of Nature'* I´d call it in terms of improving ANYTHING on the Guitar as a Guitarist: *Do as many repartitions (focused & concentrated + 'clean' = without making ANY mistakes while doing so)* until your getting so *USED TO IT* that slowly but steadily it´ll become 'second Nature to you', or in other Words until you *don´t have to think about what your hands are doing and/ or if your Fingers/ Hands are in the right position etc.* because you can do it NOW blindfolded and what not xD *Practicing* till it FEELS & SOUNDS right... *that´s the most important thing I´ve learned since I started learning to play Guitar seriously in March 2023.* Most people who want to learn playing Guitar, often tend to forget the simplest thing that´s needed to actually PLAY and ironically the NAME itself of it, is a PERMANENT reminder if you ask me xD .... *MUSCLE MEMORY* 🦾🧠🖐😤 Thank you as always for making these Videos @BERNTH I really appreciate it a lot :D ~ *DET*
I ended up switching to that exact pick holding method when I learned to play bleed (meshuggah). That song literally forced me to alter my entire picking technique. Anyway. Haven't played in literal years and just got back to playing. So these videos have been nice motivation
@@thousandislestare Bleed is a deceptively hard song to play. Lol I remember an old guitar world video where Marten (I think it was him anyway) referred to bleed as a "rhythmic excercise" and he was not joking. That's exactly how I look at the song, and it helps me to kind of visualize it better if I break it into varying rhythmic excercises rather than as one song. Idk if that concept might help you, but it did me.
The timing on this video is absolutely perfect. I was scrolling RU-vid looking for the Right video to really boost my guitar practice with the right routines right when this video dropped. Thanks for this awesome video Bernth.
Bluegrass is not nearly as far removed from metal as people think. With lots of leads, lick deviations, scale acrobatics and rhythm shenanigans you could basically argue that bluegrass with distortion is just progressive speed metal. Which makes sense, as bluegrass drew from both blues and jazz, and metal, via rock, also drew from blues and jazz. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if some of the Celtic folk metal basically just IS bluegrass with distortion.
Woah. I've been practicing sweeps for a year now and it's been frustrating, but that one small tip of not going parallel cleaned up my sweep picking instantly. BTW the modes course on patreon helped my finger dexterity so much.
I’ll definitely give this my full attention later on. My picking technique changed suddenly after I took a break from playing for a few years. I now weight my pinky finger down which has made me far more accurate than before, and just as fast. But I’m envious of people like yourself with the closed hand grip so I’d like to give that a go and see if I can get it to feel natural. Rabea’s someone else with a solid closed grip for his picking hand.
A while ago I learned your closed hand technique and got much better with it. Now i realize I got wrong the positioning of the pick. I put it on my end part of my finger instead towards the mid part. After improving the position it felt very awekward for a few hours as my knuckles shred in pain against the strings. As I let the picking hand follow the strings and not change angle much, and pulled the pick abit out of my deathgrip, it all came together. Much improved speed and control. Looking forward to putting more time into it. Thank you for your great videos!
Love the video, but it is a bit difficult to see the black pick on top of the black guitar to really see 👀 what you are talking about with the pick angle ❤️
If you like those max grips, try out the Matt Heafy signature max grip Jazz IIIs…they blow the other max grip picks out of the water (in my opinion anyway).
I used to play with an open hand and sometimes would rest my fingers on the pick guard which often made excess touching of the other strings. I also couldn’t sweep pick as it would throw the pick angle out and I would pick the strings with a lot more of the pick than was necessary which often would get stuck or slow me down in between the strings and just as bad when trem picking. Since changing to close hand I have way more control, my sweeping is still not the best or the fastest but it’s cleaner and I’m making progress. I also feel like gallop picking is a lot cleaner and you can mute the strings easier without all your loose fingers touching the other strings. The change did feel uncomfortable for a while and I was gripping the pick harder than I should lol but I just loosened up a bit and it became more comfortable, less painful, and cleaner sounding.
Hey man can you tell us the string gauge that you have on right now? Also if you can suggest string gauges for beginner and intermediate guitar players, it would be really helpful..Many thanks for your work🙏🙏
I love how the pick grip hits the strings so cleanly! However, I'm getting a lot of wrist pain from it... My hands aren't clenched either. I feel as if my fingers are to short, because the pick is still angled as well...
Hi Bernth i got one question, Should i prefer learning "playing" techniques (like legato, sweep picking or even gallop picking), scales and the theory over my "Playstyle" Techniques like Muting, deadening strings, finger placement, pressure on the strings, how i move my wrist, how to hold the pick etc.? (i hope you understand what i mean) ;)
Part 4: the Plucking section; giving us the "finger" are you? 😮🤔🤭 Well, "I pluck u too" 😂 🤪😉 After I giggle laughed about that, the video cut, and then u were laughing. I thought it was related. Yes, practicing the closed fingures into the center of the palm, man my muscles between the ring and middle finger are sore now. A physical exercise and being new to remember to do that. I have the, turning down the volume issue because of the Pinkie fingure gliding onto or passing the Knob. Yes so far, it is helping. A loose pick hold, not that I think I am "Gorrilla Hug" holding the pick. I find for speed picking, a firm grip is suited. As for more "Grandpa's guirtar" style strumming, a relaxed loose grip can be used more, for wide gliding. 🙏 for your video. It was sent to me in Devine Timing.
Hi, thank you for the great content! I was wondering if you're using an amp while you're practicing, or connecting your guitar to your computer and using a software?
I which tune is your guitar tuned in? i'm thinking about joining you on patreon you see and i'm awaiting my new guitar very soon not been playing for years by now, but before I put some new strings on my guitar i would like to know in which tune your courses are set to so i can follow along..
Very impressive man How much time did it took you to master this?I'm also learning this but I can't do that lick after main riff how do you pick so fast please help me 😊
the question is.. if you can sound as precussive as suicmez with your grip! i figured that one needs a bit of power behind rythm playing. great video! when i use this tho, my fingernails rip off
Is palm muting still possible with that grip? It seems like its more aimed towards clean sounds and no mutes or rhythm plays. i might be wrong since i am barely intermediate but i would really want to know.
Bro I was just hoping last night if someone could give me a roadmap of what to do next on guitar as I feel stuck as an Intermediate self taught player and I wake up this morning and see this video recommended to me. Are you living in my walls 😨?
So when I was a kid I cut the tendon on my pinky finger and cannot close it completely. Will this get in the way? That's the only reason I'm not closing my hand right now.
I've tried to use the pick your way and I can't do absolutely anything (I naturally tend to use a free floating hand with open fingers and the pick taken on the first phalanx). Also, when hitting the lower strings it becomes really hard to have the hand touching the bridge, the sixth goes without saying, but also the A string it's so awkward for me. It's so hard I feel a complete beginner again.
Hey guys i know I'm out of this video subject but if you could suggest something that would be really great.. what's the best monitor speakers with medium budget for death metal riffs ?. Greetings
I don’t know if anyone has advice, but I tried that pick grip briefly and it’s perfectly fine for when I’m picking but when I start strumming my fingers mainly or my thumb touches the strings Any advice?
Really not sure I have just been playing like "normal" with the guitar over my right knee but classical over the left knee seems to be preferred by alot of high-level guitarist including Bernth. Just not sure if I should make the switch or just doing what I am doing.
Try classical position for a week then switch back, best way to find out which is best for you. Personally the body of the guitar decides how I sit with it.
i just learned pinch harmonics with holding the pick in the wrong way... in that *correct* way i notice i can speed up way better but the pinch harmonics are weird in that angle. any one else having this issue? also have an issue to palm mute with this way of holding the pick... im gonna keep trying to see if i can get this right
@@1nfius948 Shoulder of fret hand arm? Probably the position you're holding the guitar in, or simply using too much pressure on strings, possibly a combination, or even just weakness in those muscles.
My sticking point is I can't even play with the slowest level of the exercises, like the alternate picking masterclass. I can't even do level 1; what do I do about that?
Try others creators, Bernth exercises are not begginner's friend. When a started one year ago I tried with bernth but was unable to do the exercises. I pivoted to more slow and tried another exercises than right now some content here is starting to making sense to me.
Dont give up, the results will come within months in the begining... Praticing slow with metronome (less than 60 bpm) require an insane amount of attention and focus, always observe what your fingers should and shouldnt do. It takes patience and a lot of will power. Remember no one likes exercises but its the only way to learn an instrument, only an exausting practice will get u there.
Take note of what you need to grab a metronome and and play it even slower so you have all the time in the world. Then go up 5-10 BPM each time until you start to mess it up slow down and repeat it.
