If you're a student, I hope this video can help you get the most out of your college experience. This is obviously not a comprehensive guide to college or anything, but it does contain a handful of things I'd do differently to ensure I got the most as a computer science student. The main message, is build community.

Are we pretending that professors are useful for computer science?

Office hours are a joke at my uny. Professors just want to get you out of there and give the most generic answers. We have something called SI sessions where students getting their masters teach lectures and answer questions on what you are learning. Best help in my opinion.

Losing office hours was a huge hit to my performance for my first degree. I went to online and yes technically you can still contact them but the motivation isn't immediate. Trying to go back for a computer science degree and I definitely want to take advantage of office hours.

Honestly, with the number of online resources there are now, most undergrad CS courses can be completed without going to class. I just graduated and went to maybe 5 classes over the four years.

1. Go to office hours - builds understanding on the topic you're studying 2. Study with classmates - you can learn things from one another 3. Join a club - reinvent yourself, try things that you haven't before 4. Don't overload yourself - full ass one thing, don't half-ass things 5. Take classes you enjoy - the expectations after college won't change how you feel about the work that you have to do

vocal exchange allows for debate and argument. This is how we learn best through words and the example of practice.

If you are gonna go to office hours, make sure it's about high level strategies and why a certain set of connections won't stick and not low level stuff that can easily be googled.

Yeah its hard to get out there and make the most of college, but i will say it is quite important because a degree doesn't really get you much, having a network and experiences is what will open doors. Im currently struggling with that at the moment, i'm about to graduate and have no idea how im gonna find a job because i didn't do much during my undergraduate other than complete classes. Im trying to build a personal project now so atleast i can show that off which is why im excited about your new series youre doing. i get to see how your workflow is and get some ideas for how i can go about creating my own project. it has been enjoyable.

i'll be going to university in hopefully around a year and 9 months and i hope i can get accepted into my college of choice and specifically the computer engineering major; i'm very excited and your advice is priceless!

Good general tips, but also you should add study on your own for a few hours too. Sometimes trying to do things for yourself first can help with understanding, where a second person may have a different way of looking at things that conflicts with your own, and sometimes that can help too. So, do both.

Your description of office hours is for the most ideal scenario. if your instructor isn’t a jerk or bad communicator, and is passionate about the subject. that is rare

Hey forrest , would you mind making a video about self-studying computer science? I’m doing mechanical engineering and I’m into coding and i’m looking for a way or a curriculum to study it myself without being overwhelmed . Though I wanted to study computer science, I instead took something that I can get a scholarship. However, I’m still looking forward to learn computer science bit by bit.

I’m a computer science student who was doing it in uni then I switched to an online university to pay for my uni. I realized switching to an online university was better for me because I get the pressure of university but also am self teaching. I am doing a boot camp on the side. I have learnt a lot more online. I always felt like I wasn’t good enough in class, everyone was smarter. Oh, and I was doing computer science bachelors in China 🇨🇳

hi, I feel the same that people around me are smarter and I have to do a lot to catch up, how did you study yourself and make sure you could keep up with other students whilst also helping yourself understand the different concepts?

One issue I see is this only really works If you are a full time student. Trying to accomplish school with a fulltime job is just not feasible with this lens.

In my country ( Cuba) we don't have office hours or clubs The professors don't even come to teach classes and many times they make us travel to the University (which is outside the city) in vain. They teach us things from 30 years ago. I had a data structure professor who didn't even know about the subject. Graduating only serves to obtain the degree. Learning depends on oneself, which is frustrating considering how complicated and extensive this career is and even more so if we do not have a guide.

My dad holds this degree, but when he told me it wouldn't be simple because I had to study for four years in a row, my ambition was dashed. Now here I am, spending eight hours on my everyday life on Adobe and having some kind of decent or kind of professional editing skills. Becoming a youtuber is probably a go for me

I only went to Uni to have a paper saying I was enrolled at it, because where I live you either have that or you're treated as nothing. I had to pay all those bloody fees, but for nothing, since I only went to take the exams and do the labs. I learned 100% of what I know using Books, and Online Plattforms, e.g. Coursera, O'Reilly, SkillsForAll, and of course, RU-vid. I even learned more from Discord or Reddit Servers/Subs than my Uni. I really can't stand this college stuff. And at work I see the difference - college people vs self-taught, independent people, who don't need anyone telling them what, where, when to do stuff.

Really appreciate your video. But let me be honest, when you are not a "good" student, who do not obtain good marks it is not that easy to find someone who wants to study or confrontate with you. What I do feel, is that people are too much attracted by the rule of numbers and then they cannot appreciate you or your ideas as individual person. That's my simple point of view, not saying this is always true. Anyway I would really enjoy having clubs, but where I live I did not find any club associated with my interest. Now I'm trying to create one but it's not that simple.
