If it isn't broke...it isn't broke - Round I

Not all vehicles are "broke" when they come to the shop. This can be the most frustrating part for a mechanic. The classic "unable to duplicate customer concern" written on the ticket. That is just how the cookie crumbled today after straightening out some other shops screw ups.
-Enjoy!

The split intake boot caught me on a 2006 Accord. It was cracked on the bottom just after the MAP in the corrugated area so I didn’t see it on a visual. When I took it off to clean the throttle body it split in half. Replacement did wonders for the fuel trims.

That sensor was a trigger for anger. The previous shop not only did a wallet flush (dishonest) but also assigned the job to someone who had no idea of how to do it, lacked the correct tools, or both (incompetence). You can't tell me the shop management wasn't aware of that. I suspect it was a chain shop, because thinking of an independant shop operating like this is just too painful.

I fell into that trap at a couple of previous jobs...vowed I would never do that again....I don't answer calls from work when I'm off, and on my days off anymore....they had 5 8+ hour days of me being there, that is far more than enough...they have plenty of other people there that can do the same stuff I do, there's no reason for me to be working when I'm not there, and certainly when I'm not being paid for it.

A few months ago my son and I changed the alternator on his car because it was a “known issue” and was throwing codes to match. The new alternator didn’t fix the problem, so we gave up and decided to change the unrelated broken battery tray. It was then we discovered the positive battery terminal was loose. Two turns with a wrench and everything was fixed. I felt extremely stupid to say the least :)

It’s a bugger of a problem, intermittance, I have had it happen to me several times, like any other vehicle owner. I had one that only happened while the engine was cold (coil breaking down) it took two years and a very busy day to finally break enough to find it. I know the symptom now ! The other main one that I can think of, that I never got to the bottom of was a van I had, that when loaded and pulling up long hills seemed to lose power. Trouble was, no temp warnings etc, and once you got it on the flat she’d pull herself together and would not do it again for the rest of the trip, hills or not. No trouble whatsoever part loaded. couldn’t find it !! Just for the abuse and cat calls that van was a Freight Rover Sherpa 200 series. 1.7l

I watch your channel all the time and I have learned a lot about other vehicles that I haven’t been around. You do a great job! My dad has a 2016 Honda CRV and he kept complaining his was going into limp mode, he’s a retired mechanic, and he hadn’t owned this Honda very long. This problem would happen when he was pulling out from an intersection or stoplight quickly. Anyway I had read about some other people experiencing this problem and they were coming up with a low fuel pressure code. His had this same code and was the only code it had. I checked his fuel pressure with my Snap-On scanner and at the moment of acceleration it did go below the desired pressure for a split second. I did some research on that problem and found the OEM fuel pump was on back order, except one place, so I ordered it. Wrong part arrived, returned it and explained what I was supposed to receive and they sent another pump with a revised part number. Replaced it and it did run better but he said it still did it. I couldn’t duplicate the problem while I drove it. He was leaving my brother’s house as I watched him leave I saw his brake lights come on for a split second while he was accelerating going uphill, so I thought about it and was thinking that if he was riding with his foot on the brake pedal, it’s very sensitive, the computer sees he’s accelerating and it sees the brake signal at the same time it goes into limp mode until he lets up on the brakes or he accelerates past 3/4 throttle. Then it accelerates aggressively. Talked with him about it and he started paying attention to that and discovered that it was the problem. He’s 91!

Eric, you have probably dealt with the late 90s Buicks that would stall when the turn signal was used... Unless we know of such common issues, we have to drive it. The customer complaint was that it would stall sometimes when making a right turn. Never a left turn for whatever reason. I had to convince the customer for me to use it as my personal vehicle for who knows how long. Finally, I discovered that it actually had to do with turn signal usage. Once I hit the turn signal, it stalled instantly. It had nothing to do with making an actual turn. The ignition switch was bad. The voltage drop across it was too much and the PCM used the same circuit. I used her vehicle and her gas for a while to go to my day job.

That AFR sensor damage is pretty entertaining - I'm sure there's a story - I wonder if they ever were able to actually get it out, or if they just kept messing with it until it broke... clearly getting a socket in there is difficult, but if you are doing diagnostics, seems like you'd be better off getting a tool that works rather than hacking at the heat shield! Tow truck up-fitter and repair here. I get the intermittent xyz stuff all the time. I have chased my tail several times. It is by far the easiest when its actually failed. Watching you and your process has made my toolbox bigger and I greatly appreciate that.Thank you!

Eric, keep up the great work. I am surprised the other Dealer shops missed the "Muffler bearings" and low "Blinker Fluid".

Not missed, those are no charge "courtesy" repairs. FYI, beginning in '24, mufflers will no longer have that feature, 💩🚽👌 because the PRNY requires you to drive electric or not drive @ all . 🐄💩

Plugs and valve adjustment are maintenance item "4" at 105k per Honda, it could be a tight valve. Injectors are also common on this engine for misfire codes.

You only lined up the parts cannon at what you knew for sure needed to be replaced and it looks like it has stayed fixed. But you also know problems can be so hidden like the plastic in the intake, or only happen when there isn't much fuel in the tank and you're on a steep hill of if you need to do an emergency stop and some water or gunk in the tank shifts about. Or there's a chaffing wire or a mis-fitted after-market thing. People living within driving distance of your shop are so lucky to have the benefit of your knowledge and services.

The vibrations in drive were a common concern in 2015 when Honda started using the Earth Dreams 2.4 in these cars. Apparently, the vibrations had something to do with the engine having slightly offset cylinders, which introduced vibrations. Honda had several TSBs to replace the radiator mount, seat isolators and other things. My dad’s 2016 CR-V has some noticeable vibration, too.

ב''ה, Clutch album prophecy? Not a lot of Honda experience, first time hearing they named this engine thus. Also tend to enjoy that band, but "Earth Rocker" somehow didn't hit right for me, some good intentions but a bit burnt out perhaps in prelude to some sadder rock'n'roll stuff. Barely watching the video but hopefully a reasonable job on the diagnosis and I may have seen some infinitely improbable computer stuff as far back as this model year.

I do it just like that, but I offer them to just show up without an appointment if it acts up so I can see what it's doing, I'll do quick test drive with scanner hooked up and then reschedule for repair if I don't have time right then Usually my customers are greatful that I'm trying to help.❤

My Outback had a cyl 6 misfire while my wife was driving (twice) the day before we were leaving for a trip towing a trailer! I couldn't get it to repeat for me, filled tank with fresh fuel and changed the well used air filter. Now 500 km later, at our destination, still waiting for it to reappear!

ב''ה, dunno that year but that's kind of a Subaru thing. Once in forever after checking the obvious is kind of a "that happens" between the electronics/sensing system and any vagaries of the flat engine (oil blow-by more easily reaching the spark?) .. if it actually begins running poorly or becomes a regular occurrence then bother digging, unless a more experienced 5-star fan has anything to add.

I once took a customers Escalade home and basically used it as my daily driver for over a week because my shop simply couldn’t get it to duplicate his issue during business hours (engine randomly shuts off and no crank for 30 minutes after driving for about an hour). Managed to get it to finally act up and allow me to diagnose the issue.....after spending $120 of my own money on gas. Turns out the high amperage fuse on the firewall next to the battery had corrosion on the electrical contacts, which caused intermittent loss of power to almost all the modules that keep the car running.

I don't know about you but I am paranoid driving someone's car (even rentals with extra insurance) so I wouldn't want to drive someone's car either, too much liability and also what if a different problem pops up? Then they come back to you to fix it as if you broke it. Great video Eric and I love that you are always looking out for your customers best interest.

They didn't have the thin profile sensor socket, thus they mangled the shield around it. I've seen that many times.
