My friends over at the Angel Eyes channel left this comment on my Luka video - "Nice! Hey! Missing your ABBA covers. Please check out “If It Wasn’t For the Nights”. It’s got a fantastic bass line. 👏🤩" I'm pretty sure they made the original suggestion a while back but, in any case, here it is! In the mean time I will be awaiting my next assignment from Angel Eyes - / @angeleyesabba
"If It Wasn't for the Nights" by ABBA off of their Voulez-Vous album which came out in 1979 and featured a number of bass players, including Rutger Gunnarsson, Mike Watson, and Arnold Paseiro. I'm not certain who played on this one, but I think it's between Gunnarsson and Watson.
I'm playing the 1998 MusicMan Sterling through a SansAmp Paradriver.

I’ve always found that ABBA have a lot of hidden gems that people tend to miss because they’re overshadowed by the bigger hits. Soldiers, I Let The Music Speak, this song and One Man, One Woman are some of those songs.

I just found you. Better late than never. I love to focus on the bass line and you highlighted it for me. Thanks! There's a lot of subtlety and syncopation here. The Abba bassists were kicking it -- as well as the drummers.

Sir, I just wanted to say that my father and I have bonded over your videos for YEARS. I started playing bass in High School, the same time he picked up his own bass, and we've bonded over your covers constantly. Drooling over the basses, marveling at the masks and just grooving to your jams always. I remember many times where we were sitting around and my dad would say "put on the funky dude with the masks!" Thanks giving us these moments!

Being a confirmed Rocker (RUSH # 1), I absolutely appreciate your Fan, Wim Rijksen realizing years later how awesome many of these tunes were and still are! I was a silent listener of ABBA and so many artists and Bands of that Style of music. In my car or by myself I enjoyed many of these types of songs. But out and about with friends or at concerts, I kept this secret!🤣 And DISCO never made it on any of my playlists too! 😂 I also have never gotten into Hard Core Heavy Metal. The Screaming of lyrics just didn't work for me. ABBA is a part of my youth and anytime I hear them singing, I always "Go Back" and remember those good times! Great Saturday Treat Troy! I’ve made comment about you smiling when you play something you like. I’ve just started smiling again in the last year. I lost my wife of 35 years two years ago. Whenever I’d play things she liked she’d dance all over the house with the biggest smile. She was my biggest fan and groupie. I stopped playing when cancer made it where she couldn’t get around. It made her sad she couldn’t dance. Just in the last year or so I’ve been able to pick it back up and play. Sometimes I still see her smiling and dancing. And that makes me smile. As I said I really enjoy seeing you play the bass. The bass is my most favorite ! Thanks Troy

How come you learn the tracks so fast, including all those tricky parts, adding those little notes that might appear on a third chorus only, and stuff like that? Your musical ear is just amazing. Thank you! Actually, nothing happens quickly on my end. I believe you suggested this song back on my "Does Your Mother Know" video, which I uploaded back in January. I don't remember when I started learning it, but I'm sure I put a few weeks into it. There were many little details that took time to learn and commit to memory. After recording it, it sat on my desktop until someone else happened to request it. I'm very glad you liked it. I certainly enjoyed learning it. Take care!

Man. You sound great on a Musicman. I appreciate that you don't use a ton of that steely treble that these have. You really sound fantastic on all your rigs, though. Your hand gets that nice high mid traction and you're really consistent with your touch.

Thanks Scott! I really struggle to get a sound I'm happy with from them and I recorded a couple of videos before this one (have not uploaded them yet) where I overdid it with the Treble knob. I just bumped it up a bit, but the MM high-end is so shrill and brittle sounding. My only 5 string is a MusicMan and, while I love the bass, I'm not crazy about the way it sounds or the trouble I have to go through to get a sound I can barely tolerate out of it. I've got an interesting plan for it, so stay tuned.

I don't really think about it too much, but each song dictates the way I'm going to approach learning it and I don't know how it's going to go until I start. Some songs, I learn note for note, from start to finish. Some songs, I'll glance over all of the parts and then go back to fill in the minor details. Some songs, I'll tackle the most difficult parts first and then go back and polish up the easier sections and string it all together. Sometimes it's a mix and match of all of these approaches.

Love the tone. Usually every time someone is playing a Music Man it is super zingy. You got a great tone out of that beast like a super charged jazz bridge pickup. It fits the track great.

I always struggle a bit trying to get a tone out of the MusicMan basses. I find it works best just to leave the treble alone. Their top end can get a little shrill very quickly.

Cool! Hey, if you like it, keep playing it. Some of my favorite basses are the less expensive ones. How much a bass costs or where it was made has nothing to do with whether it's a great bass or not.
