I think it was a combination of him hating the song for its success and the fact that it was a very produced song that he knew wouldn't translate live with great accuracy. He couldn't nail the tone switches between the clean and distorted main riff or remember how to play the solo (Butch Vig came up with the idea to play the chorus melody for the solo) so I think he just had a "fuck it" attitude since those ideas during the recording/production weren't his anyway

Yeah it's definitely easy to play and remember. But keep in mind Kurt was a shit guitar player and admitted to it lol. He said in interviews that there were solos and other parts that he never went back and learned or that he forgot how to play. Judging by Reading and many other recorded performances of Teen Spirit, that solo was one part Kurt never took the time to practice. Butch mentioned in the Nevermind documentary that he pushed Kurt to play the chorus melody for the solo and to record the clean and distorted guitar parts in separate takes even though Kurt didn't want to because he knew he wouldn't be able to nail the pedal tap dance live. At the end of the main riff, he has to switch to clean and hit his chorus and he almost never actually nailed that switch live

I've actually seen them live. They performed everything spot on, some slight mess-ups here or there. No live performance is ever exactly like the record. And how can you edit a performance through stage equipment? That makes literally zero sense. You can edit footage in post, overdub stuff after the performance, but you can't mask the performance while it's going on. Also, maybe all the videos you've seen are just footage of not so good shows taken by people who always look for a bad show regardless of how good the majority of the performance may be. Some people only want to see the negative/bad side of things regardless of when a good performance is right in front of them. Also, I'm pretty sure if you had to play a million notes a second for 1-2 hours night after night, you'd probably make some mistakes too. Even with rehearsals that shit ain't easy. At least in the studio, they can spend hours to days on end honing their chops to laser precision, whereas live? They only have a couple hours before the show to warm up and rehearse everything. And with licks like the ones they play, from complex tapping licks that span the fretboard in a few bars to fast sweeps and alternate picked passages that require hours upon hours upon hours of practicing, it's no wonder than not every show they play is gonna have spot on note-for-note performances. Shit's tough to do. Mistakes are inevitable in a live setting. Unless you're Dream Theater, playing a million notes a second without any mistakes whatsoever every single performance is like asking Herman Li to get a haircut, it just ain't gonna happen.
