Sans doesnt really have a backstory, the thing I have heard from the Handplates AU is that he was created by Gaster? Because if he was born he would be part of the Humans, I am gonna imply the "Is Sans Ness Theory" because at the end of Undertale, you can see the castle or something and you can find that in Earthbound. Hes only depressed because of the fandom, and thats only FANON. Canon Sans is just the hardest boss fight. Toby Fox doesnt care about the fandom anymore and lets it slide.
People have just gravitated over to him over time even though the first 2 undertale au pictures didn't originally include sans underfell was toriel and underswap was pap I'm pretty sure and the first undertale comic was made about an alternate ending to the pacifist run where asriel comes eith you to the surface
sans explaining how he has 1 hp in a single sentence is about as realistic as exposition for the final boss battle on the first level. and now hes explaining his entire AU in one fell swoop without realizing that hes supposed to be keeping it a *SeCrEt*

Well everyoen cries when sans died but when player dies noone cares they have to fricking get the whole level again imagine how frustrating and how many players had a mental breakdown
