------------------------------------------------------------------
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;
If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn--out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run --
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man my son!

An extended pause or 40 wouldn't go amiss.When Kipling said "don't breath" he never meant it too be taken quite so literally.However prop's for getting the best poem ever written (I.M.O) out there.Peace✌

Good reading. My (constructive) comments, if I may: The 2nd verse: where you see the "-", you should pause longer (longer than where you have paused for a ",") The end of the last line has an exclamation mark, but you don't make it sound like an exclamation. I hope you are not offended by these comments.

Hi Bern, No offence taken. Thanks for the useful comments. I'll bear them in mind next time I recite this, and also if I ever re-record it. The more I read and record poems, the more more reading style evolves (and hopefully improves!)

Martin Harris Hi Martin. When I look at the original poem, I concentrate on the use of his punctuation. I think he has been very clever in the writing and he knows the difference between the use of a comma, a semi-colon and a hyphen. That was his way of communicating how it should be recited (even the exclamation mark!). It would be wonderful to hear him reciting this fabulous poem! My only grouse: it's only written for men!

Bern From Wales Hi, Bern. Please, read the YOUR POEM by Robert Service. "My poem may be yours indeed In melody and tone, If in its rhythm you can read A music of your own; If in its pale woof you can weave Your lovelier design, 'Twill make my lyric, I believe, More yours than mine. I'm but a prompter at the best; Crude cues are all I give. In simple stanzas I suggest - 'Tis you who make them live. My bit of rhyme is but a frame, And if my lines you quote, I think, although they bear my name, 'Tis you who wrote. Yours is the beauty that you see In any words I sing; The magic and the melody 'Tis you, dear friend, who bring. Yea, by the glory and the gleam, The loveliness that lures Your thought to starry heights of dream, The poem's yours."

I'm a Yorkshire Englishman and i bet this would sound even better if Tom Jones narrated this. His deep booming voice would add another element to the poem.

Наталья Шмелева Well, they might not know our poetry well, but they certainly know our prose well. Poetry is a too tied to language to be translated well between languages so different from each other as Russian and English.

This poem, is a synopsis on my life....iF We had more choices in this life! This life is a very hard life to live, when I was a child, i lived in ignorance and thought all things would make amends and be made right in time. How naive i was then, to release the adult world is a cold north wind in the face of idealistic dreams. For me its been loveless, cold and a big stuggle, just working to live...sad to say.

It's called "If" for a reason, cos you have absolutely no chance of having all these characteristics and traits.
