Austin local and Harvard student Lori Blewett created this video about her old neighborhood and how they worked through the presence of oak wilt.
Oak wilt is a contagious and incurable tree disease. Between the years 1975 - 1995, more than 10,000 oak trees were lost to oak wilt in Austin, Texas.
This is the story of oak wilt suppression in the Castlewood Forest/Oak Valley neighborhood and how Texas A&M Forest Service worked with the community to protect its community trees.

I see that this video is about 5 years old. Anyhow, I have recently had 2 oaks in my yard die over a few years. The trees had both died from the top limbs down, with the bottom few limbs still looking fine. 1 was an English oak, and 1 was a Quercus Velutina. I had BOTH trees cut down to soil level. It was really sad. And, when I had hired a tree trimming company to come out and prune some trees that were healthy, I had also shown them 1 of the trees that had been POSSIBLY been affected with OAK WILT, and they had cut that tree down to soil level. So, it is very upsetting that I had to have that tree cut down to soil level. The guy in charge at that TREE trimming company most likely had been SURE that my tree had been dead from SOMETHING that it could NOT EVER RECOVER FROM. Anyhow, I was told that it had likely been "oak wilt" that had killed my 2 trees. But, the guy would NOT actually say to me that "oak wilt had killed your trees". The 2 trees had died after having the upper branches not ever leaf out, basically, the trees had put out leaves on the middle and lower branches. And, the BIGGEST PROBLEM had been is how that eventually the tree had just seemed to have CROAKED dead. Anyway, I REALLY do wish that there would be an actual SURE FIRE way to diagnose "OAK WILT". Having lost 2 oak tree's in my yard, I really do wonder IF my l0oss had REALLY been from "Oak wilt".

This is a story that gives me hope for the future. This neighborhood came together and worked towards a common goal and look at what they've done. Imagine if the entire nation did that with our corrupt oligarchy in Washington's district of parasites and criminals! Back to the subject at hand, I'd love to be surrounded by people who love trees as much as I do. I'm surrounded by those who top them and could care less that ash, hemlock, balsam fir, and crimson king maples are dying....not to mention that all american chestnut and American elm are done gone. Not sure what it would take to wake this nation up about the trees and our fake republic/democracy.

Why would you cutting trees that aren’t oak, cause your neighbors oak trees to die?
